I tried hybrids. Never liked them AT ALL. I now carry a 3W, 5W, 7W, 9W, 11W, 7i-9i, PW, SW, LW 68. No driver. I use senior graphite shafts. Since going to all of these woods, my game has improved a lot. I also put in more time working on wedges and putting because that is where I am really shaving strokes off. I am not a long ball hitter. I have seen folks go either way with the hybrid vs woods but they definitely seem to like one OR the other. Rarely do I see people like them both.

Well, I technically like my 230max 5 wood for its off the tee performance on days when I curve my driver too much, but it took me 23 years of golf before I dared try a fairway wood this year. Over the last 7 years I had just learned to control my 3 hybrid, then the aftermath of a frozen shoulder got me to try out a 5 hybrid. Love it despite I can make a full backswing again with a 5i, so it stays in the bag. So much more forgiving. Agree with the comment lower down to include the aspect of lie. I still am completely irregular hitting 5 wood off the deck, even on a friendly fairway lie I only take the 5w out to produce a punch shot if I need to keep it low against a headwind. semi rough is 5H every day, rough is 6i.

@@pbode1 Play to your strengths. I hope that shoulder gets better. I have had 3 back surgeries. I have a super short backswing but my hips work so I can still swing somewhat.

Replaced my 5 wood with a 2 hybrid, both set at 16°. Contact, distance, control WAY better with the hybrid. If there's a 13° hybrid I'd replace the 3 wood.

If I'm playing a course with elevation, i probably go with the 7 wood. A flat windy course I may bench the 7 wood for a a the 4 hybrid.

My issue about switching to hybrids and fairway woods, is the cost especially if wanting a good one like ping, but for those not wanting to spend over $200 a club it can be a challenge to find the right one to have the confidence in hitting one

A friendly tip, I found amazing fairway woods that I love that replaced my long irons. They are the Yukons by pine meadow. They are on Amazon and look horrendously ugly and cheap in the photos for some reason but they look great in person. They are like 40-50$ a wood. I highly recommend. And they are so cheap if you love them it’s a steal like me and if you hate them then it’s not a big loss.

Hi Ali. I switch between a 3 hybrid and 5 wood but I draw the ball and I am always nervous of the card wrecking duck hook with the hybrid. Is that why you shy away from the hybrid? This is interesting and I think I’ll be looking at some more lofted woods. Thanks. Great video.

I am a high swing speed player, and fairway woods are so much easier to hit. 2 years ago, I only played a driver and irons, and now I play driver,3wd,5wd,7wd, and 9wd and all my fairway woods are properly 4* away from each other, I also have a old school 13 wood I puton the bag every now and then. I will never return to any iron stronger than 6 iron.

My hybrids are really old. Like Ping Rapture/G10 old. But I've hit them really well. But looking about updating them and considering switching to fairway woods. Man, golf is full of difficult choices.

It's the spin that kills the distance with a higher loft wood. I game a 4hy, 2hy and 3w. If you play a fade, you can land greens with a hybrid.

It actually looks to me like the 9 wood is the perfect way to end the long side of the bag, and the 4hy the perfect way to start the iron side.

Take the clubs to the ruff and compare them. Real world application vs a flat hitting matt

Ok - this is all well and good hitting hybrids off of range mats…. We don’t play off,of range mats, do we? But remember why they exist in the first place? They are called ‘rescue’ for a reason and that reason is ROUGH. I play southern US courses with Bermuda rough and fairway woods don’t cut it. You have to have a small head to get down to the ball and have any chance to make decent contact and move it down the (hopefully) fairway. Until someone makes a driving range mat that simulates thick rough these ‘tests’ aren’t as valid as you are making them out to be. Otherwise - good video but how about a real-world comparison?
