I find working on my inside is often still superficial. I try to reason well and control my thoughts besides behaviors, but if my disposition is ill, whether anxious or depressed or angry or 'needy', my reason fails me, my thoughts that arise come under the control of the passions, and I then behave badly. Without a good or calm or peaceful or restful disposition or interior spirit, it's an uphill struggle or restless interior labor. If you don't get at the heart of the problem, the heart remains ill and generates ill thoughts which generate ill behaviors. It's easier to dam or cross a river at its source when it's a trickling stream than it is where it reaches the ocean and is wide with a strong current, but most of us can't find the heart source of our thoughts and behaviors. Instead we try to control or dam our thoughts and behaviors. We swim in them and get carried away by their current. It's easier to cross the Mississippi River at pure Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota than it is to swim across it at sin city New Orleans. The problem is finding the source of the river in us in our hearts. Above all else guard your heart for it is the spring of life. In order to guard it, you have to find it by seeking it, knocking on its door, and asking to enter.

I find dedicating as much time as I can to prayer, listening to Bible in a Year, watching Mass, going to Mass, devotions…really helps diminish the struggles
