I will say this much about Hasselhoff: the man is definitely trying. He's not giving a phoned-in performance. He throwing in all of his effort, doing everything he can with a role that is very challenging even for veteran Broadway actors. So, props Dave. Thank you for not phoning it in like a lot of other stunt casting choices. Thank you for not giving up.

Ok, not half bad. He's trying, that's what counts. I feel Anthony Warlow still holds the title of best versions of these songs, but Mr. H isn't too bad.
@andy_bomb46393 жыл бұрын
He's not Anthony Warlow but his singing was still on fleek. And his acting of course is flawless. He's committing to this role. I mean how many other broadway actors are willing to beat an old man with a stick and set him on fire?

David's version was the first I saw / heard of this musical. So perhaps I'm a bit biased, but I really enjoyed his performance ...AND singing. I think he did a good job considering his background.

When hasslehoff threw the fireball I actually fell out of my chair in shock. I have the same general consensus as a lot of people. If this wasn't a musical it would've been incredible. Hasslehoff didn't do quite so well with the songs, but his acting was top notch.

I think he did the song a lot better than some versions, or at the least the musical director/composer/w/e set it up better. The murder scenes though... are kinda... lacking. Though I suppose considering the actors' age, they couldn't really be smacking them around.

@thepoptartprincess If you haven't seen the George Hearn/Angela Lansbury version of Sweeney Todd, you're definately missing out. That's the tour version, it was recorded on dvd. The original cast features Len Cariou/Angela Lansbury, and it's just as good. When people say "Oh, yeah, I've seen Sweeney Todd!" i immediately ask "What version?" because if you've ONLY seen the Burton version, you're sincerely missing out on how great the musical can be.

I admit to knowing that Hasselhoff is not a singer by nature, but i have to acknowledge that the way he sings this is not...evil enough? It seems the same all the way through. If you think of Robert's version (obc), he has so many changes in his tone, the way he sings it, that you are instantly intimidated by his Hyde. With David is just seems it's not dark enough when he's singing. When he's acting, it's there.

@Mygirlfriendisfat I agree. Hasselhoff was my first viewing of Jekyll/Hyde on DVD. and I agree, David's Hyde was amazing. No dbout.

Note to camera operators and the editor of this production: in a play when someone is pretending to hit someone don't show it from an angle where it's clear he isn't coming close to actually striking the person

I wouldn't mind David Hasselhoff at all, if only his vibrato didn't sound like he was warbling! But, look who's talking, I couldn't do half the things he does in this show, though I wish I could!
@carriewhite41014 жыл бұрын
@thepoptartprincess About the Sweeney Todd thing...I agree with you 100000%!! The original cast had SO much feeling, whereas the Burton version I believe was made mostly for look and not actual performance.
@thepoptartprincess14 жыл бұрын
As stated in my previous comment, if you want to hear almost impeccable singing technique, listen to the way Julie Andrews sings in MY FAIR LADY. (I Could Have Danced All Night or Without You) Mr. Hasselhoff sings on his diphthongs, so he's singing Alaiiiiiive rather than Alaaaaive. It's hard to explain with only typing, but the word Alive has two vowel sounds, a and i, forming a diphthong. A is the open vowel, while I is the closed one. Try singing Ahh, then try singing Eee. Which is easier?
@dethe8ter13 жыл бұрын
@JxL483 Yes he may not be a trained singer but IMO he is the best one I mean Cuccioli's voice is amazing but his acting seems a little minimal for me but all things considered I think Hoff did amazing .

@MrJokerfan01 You're not the only one. There are some parts that should've been better singing wise, but he didn't do so bad at all with the acting. I love how he gets into it. His Hyde is pretty good (loved his Alive reprise when he stalks toward the Bishop). He just.. doesn't have the look for Jekyll, though. Too..beefy? lol

@thepoptartprincess Apologies for the doublepost, not sure why it happened. Anyway, I didn't know it was his first Broadway performance. He did well for a difficult role though, I would've personally given it to someone better at it (Johnny Depp, in my opinion, could've pulled it off well).

David may suck at singing, but he probably has the best control over the lyrics 1:39-1:48. Yes, I said it, David's good for this something in this show besides murdering people and his physical take on the characters.

@McCoy196 I don't know much about Cuccioli's performance, I've only heard him on the soundtrack, so I'll take your word that his acting was bad. I could understand Hasselhoff, but that's if I'm really focusing on each word sung, which isn't really the idea. And Hasselhoff is an okay actor... I'm just not a fan. I feel that he just wasn't a great choice for the role. It was his first Broadway show, and I think that the (difficult!) role should probably have gone to a more seasoned thespian.
@Harleylover1411 жыл бұрын
you're probably right
@thepoptartprincess14 жыл бұрын
@McCoy196 Didn't he say that at the end of the DVD? After he does that "Didja like it?" (which made me want to vomit). And this isn't slighting Johnny Depp, but I really hated his performance in Sweeney Todd. I mean, maybe it was Burton's fault, but everyone sounded detached and about ready to fall asleep compared to the original Broadway cast. So I can only imagine what he would be like onstage. In my opinion, Terrence Mann, had he been younger, could have been an excellent Jekyll/Hyde.
@SpookGod14 жыл бұрын
@thepoptartprincess Hasselhoff did good with the acting. He didn't do very good with the singing though, he's often way too hard to understand. At times I can understand what he's saying, but more often than not I needed lyrics in front of me to understand what he was singing. Cuccioli's performance was bad, in my opinion, I didn't like him, I've only heard Warlow's singing, but I liked it. I think if Hasselhoff could sing as well as Warlow, that'd be one heck of a performance.

@JekyllsFacade It could've been a lot better. I do like his Hyde, though first impression of his Hyde, as you said, isn't very good. I mean, for being what seems to be pure evil, he does only stare at his hands. Not to mention he's very difficult to understand when he sings. The other two pet peeves- back to the audience, and where did the fire come from? Did he utter an incantation for fire to pop up out of nowhere or what? Haha. =P

He needed more power in voice and actions, this is a song of rebirth( an exhilaration created from the discovery of his evil nature), Hoff could have pulled it off, it wasnt all his fault it was bad, partially the director

actaully the only thing i dont like about hassel hoffs is the vibrato in his voice, but thats nothing really. Besides its not an easy task to play this part. He isnt the best, but he did well.

@carriewhite410 I sincerely hope you're right, because those performances were... ugh. I mean, they did so much serious miscasting.... Mrs. Lovett's supposed to be this dumpy 40 something woman, and Helena Bonham Carter is... not. At all... And Sweeney's hair.... I was expecting it to rear up and attack, revealing itself to be a skunk. The little boy who played Toby even looked smart, which goes against Toby's character.... I could go on all day about this movie, so I better shut up now. xD

The yell/note thing at the beginning is better than Robert Cuccioli's, and that's the only good thing. What I really hate about David Hasselhoff's performance is his actual singing technique. It's not his voice, but the way he sings it. He chops up his words and spits them out (Ed-ward-Hyde!), pronounces his American R so much that it cuts off his note (Lust like a raging desiRe), and he often sings on consonants rather than vowels (see above), and he pronounces diphthongs as he sings. (AlaIve)
