What is Pastoralism? | Pastoralism in Anthropology | Pastoralism Types, Risks, Challenges, & More!

One of my favorite anthropological concepts is the overlapping idea of transhumance, which involves peoples moving in relationship to changes in season, although such movements are not restricted to just those people who follow/herd livestock. Many groups of pastoralists have been studied by anthropologists; however, there are some groups that can be more easily connected with much scholarly literature. Among the most interesting, to me, have been: The Maasai people who depend upon cattle, but some groups of Maasai have been practicing agriculture for some time. Also, they are currently troubled by changing ideas about land ownership within their homelands. The Bakhtiari peoples of the Iranian highland. Historically their movement has been highly connected to seasonality; and, they have historically incorporated advanced horticulture and agriculture into their subsistence strategies. The Kirghiz and Wakhi peoples of Central Asia whose pastoralist practices are specifically adapted to a highland environment. In recent years they have been negatively impacted by the increasingly formal boundaries created and controlled by modern nation-states. The Sámi peoples of the Arctic regions of Finland, Norway, Russia, and Sweden. They have traditionally been thought of as reindeer herders; however, those groups practicing "pure" pastoralism are very few in number now. Unfortunately, one of the things I've learned about KZbin is that if I start providing too many formatted article/book citations in a comment, then my comments begin being removed by the algorithm within seconds of posting them. So, I will just recommend using Google Scholar and signing up for a JSTOR account. One good article to start with, just to get pointed into the areas that you might most interesting, would be an article entitled "Nomadic Pastoralism," written by Rada and Neville Dyson-Hudson. Do you have any text/non-fiction books that look at pastoralism? How did you come to studying the topic? & likewise do you have any podcast recommendations? This was such a timely video. I am learning about agroecology & foodsystems atm from enviromental science, but using & designing some anthopology/ethnographic research.

Hi Alivia, i loved the video. I also have a request, if you are interested could you please make a video on visual anthropology and what are the things that an individual can do independently. I saw your previous video on visual anthropology. I am asking this because i have a fine arts degree and i draw and sculpt.I am also pursuing my masters in anthropology. I would like your opinion and advice on how can I use my skill and what are the possible paths that i can look into. It does not have to be a job per se or something which would pay me from day one. I am looking for something that i could do and enjoy, is useful and maybe someday i can earn from it. Thank you.

I'm actually not sure, but I'd be happy to investigate! I'd recommend doing some research on this side of cultural anthropology as well :) Maybe exploring Google scholar for some kinds of work anthropologists have done in this area to see some examples

I've always been interested in homeless culture. They live a type of nomadic lifestyle much like pastoralist. There are different types as well. My good friend has been living in his car for over 10 years and has an interesting way of life.

Aw this is wonderful! I'd recommend trying to learn about it and read about it whenever you can in your free time. Eventually, it could be a good idea to start working or volunteering at museums an go from there!

I think volunteering at a museum is an excellent idea. It will also depend where you wish to study and practice. In many jurisdictions the thing that keeps archaeologists working as archaeologists is because there is a legal requirement to conduct archaeological investigations prior to terrain/viewshed modifying construction activities; however, this typically doesn't look anything like the formal excavations that most people have in mind. One great source of information about the different skill sets you will need to develop is the document that UNESCO has released recently, entitled "Competence Framework for Cultural Heritage Management: A Guide to the Essential Skills and Knowledge for Cultural Heritage Practitioners."
