Will Netanyahu annex the Jordan Valley? | Inside Story

It's being called an 'act of aggression' that could lead to war.
But that hasn't detered Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from promising to annex large parts of the occupied West Bank, if he wins next week's snap election.
Netanyahu is fighting for his political career after an inconclusive vote in April.
And he says Israel will 'apply Israeli sovereignty to the Jordan Valley and the northern Dead Sea immediately' if he secures a fifth term.
The Jordan Valley and the northern Dead Sea make up 30 percent of the occupied West Bank.
Approximately 65,000 Palestinians and 11,000 Israelis living in illegal settlements, reside in that area.
The main Palestinian city is Jericho, that has about 28 villages and some Bedouin communities.
Annexation would also encircle any future Palestine state.
So, is it an election ploy to woo voters?
And what would the outcome be?

The status of settlements which compromise 5% of the West Bank could have been finalized by Arafat at the 2000 Camp David Summit peace talks, infact land swaps were negotiated, however the plan was rejected by Arafat and his main gripe was not settlements but the status of Jerusalem, or more likely it was just that he didnt want to have peace with Israel. In 2005, Israel destroyed more than 20 settlements and evicted 8,000 Jewish settlers from the Gaza Strip. The move did not leave an impression on the overwhelming majority of Palestinians, especially those affiliated with Hamas and radical groups in the Gaza Strip. Hamas and its allies misinterpreted the disengagement from the Gaza Strip as a sign of weakness, not a goodwill gesture on the part of Israel.

At 17:05 one of talking heads claims that Netenyahu was "behind" the assassination of a previous Israeli Prime Minister because Netanyahu called him nasty names during an election campaign. By that logic, Al Jazeera is presumably responsible for terrorist attacks against the populations of all the countries it covers unfavorably (i.e., Saudi Arabia, India, the PLO, the U.S., Israel, etc). Why do people say that Israel annexing the Jordan Valley would make an independent Palestinian state impossible? Don't hate me, just trying to understand. There *are* successful states today that exist completely surrounded by another state, like San Marino (surrounded by Italy), and places like Monaco (surrounded by France), Lichtenstein (surrounded by Germany and Austria), the UAE. If Israel did annex the Jordan Valley, it doesn't seem like it would make a Palestinian state impossible. It would just mean that Israel would have control over the border with Jordan and more access to fresh water, so presumably the Palestinian state in the West Bank would need to be on good terms with Israel. Gaza would still share a border with Egypt and have ports on the Mediterranean, and presumably there would be a way for people to travel between Gaza and the rest of the Palestinian state.
