In this week's UpFront, we talk to the former NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who still maintains the NATO-led air campaign against Muammar Gaddafi in Libya was a "model intervention".
In the Reality Check, Mehdi Hasan explains how, although the refugee crisis in Europe may be overwhelming, the scale of the catastrophe is much worse in Africa.
And in the Arena, we debate the future of an independent Kurdish state in Iraq, and whether it would further destabilise the already war-torn country.

I doubt if he was a great leader. I think leading the revolution and putting end to monarchy was a great deed. I think he reacted senselessly when certain faction op society( with or without help of western government) wanted some change. Ofcourse the western gouvernment, more specifically clintons....and others, with their messiah complex must have been unbearable, but he should have looked for a peaceful ways before situations got out of hand.

Rohite Rai gadafi was a great ruler indeed. NATO with others destroyed a financialy stable country and tore it into pieces n made the people suffer . Watch the rebel leaders' interviews, even they blame the west for stopping the support after the victory and leaving the country for all terrorist organizations to take over. Hope libia will be stable n people will have peace under Gaddafi's son.

Carl karoli already did (partially) and end up with confusing conclusions on who were telling the truth, thus whose perspectives were truly truthful. Gadaffi performed well during his earlier reigns with all the free amenities, houses, and education, etc. , and thus loved by his country men. However, it wasn't clear to me for how long was that. Some narrated that because of corruption, tribal and political unrests and conflicts, domestic violence, human rights violations, and Gaddaffi's hold to stay in power, all in all resulted to rebellion of some Libyans. and thus the international community (specifically the members of NATO) had to "help" Libya. Since Libya is a country with tons of oil reserves and whilst Gaddafi was gaining international admirations. But he cannot be subdued by other oil-producing countries or that he is disrupting the usual oil-business, they said. So to seize his control over these vast reserve and influence, competitors or those who perceived him as threat trained and provide financial and military assistance to the rebels (who later rebranded as Al-Q, ISIS/ISIL among other terrorist, as mentioned by some reports) to cause internal disability. Another narrative mentioned that the corruption was done because Gaddaffi uses the money to bribe some international leaders (some cited France Former PM Sarkovsky??) to side him (purpose not clear to me). Some reports mentioned that Gaddafi was against the idea of a pipeline (was it Libya or another Country that logistically hinder their goal). Some said the he refused to supply oil to some countries. Who knows what really is the truth? Who really must be blame? That is why I was asking.
@ruganzureggie385

Glazecoat Epoxy the truth is gadhafi had operated a very secret project delegating the AU to draft a bill that would regulate and unite all African currency under a gold standard much like the US during the early 20th century except they'd be using their own manufactured gold forms of money. This of course would mean making Africa a more united economy and break off heavily from the world bank. Officials from ethiopia Rwanda Tunisia Mali have reported to this and to many African outlets this is common knowledge. The world powers today cannot be maintained unless Africa is contillualy handicapped from abuse of their resources and little back profit
@arieadajar
@arieadajar 7 жыл бұрын
AU, African Union? This is new info for me and I guess, that will be a revolutionary idea for Africans. Africans uniting and supporting each other more and standing on their own. No wonder major world banks, see him as a threath. Never heard this from any of the major Western Media Sources wherein most international news were duplicated and relayed to their Asian outlets. Only the atrocities of Gaddaffi's regime was recycled. Could you suggest another reliable African news channels (aside from Alzajeera? It's better to have more sources and different versions of information and cross-checking them. Thank you. Anyway, what happen now to the AU movement??

Let me get it straight, NATO is the organisation that went into Libya and helped to create this current crisis, however they expected the UN to come and basically clean their mess. If they seriously wanted to help Libya, they should have carefully thought about a comprehensive plan to build Libya after Qaddafi was gone.

Rasmussen sounds like drunk - the NATO policy against Libya was drunk. It was not based on facts.
@elmatheus2917
@elmatheus2917 5 жыл бұрын
He does sound drunk. This is a man who have claimed he completly stayed away from alkohol, something he stated back when he was prime minister of Denmark. A lot of danish news articles have since stated those claims were not true. And now just a month ago he appeared in a tv program where he was drinking wine during a roadtrip through out europe. He also played a big part in getting my country to participate in wars in the middle east based on false pretenses, and despite insufficient votes in our parlament to allow us to even do so according to law. That is what landed him the job in Nato in the first place. He sold out his country, yet the ordinary person in Denmark is not aware of this. If you tell them, they simply say this is not true and that could never happen. I dont trust this guy. And its amazing how some one who probably speaks english on a daily basis still sounds like he just came out of his hill billys fathers farm just yesterday.

Rasmussen is right. The "intervention", which was strictly delineated from above, was neatly done, but there was no follow up whatever. Bottom line is the intervention was totally stupid because it was an isolated act and not part of a long plan to rebuild Libya. Rather typical of Hillary Clinton's Neocon plan to solve every problem with explosives. Also, the interviewer is not interested in learning anything from Rasmussen; he is only interested in his preordained script punctuated with skeptical scowls. He already knows his preferred answers and is only interested in a fictional argumentation. Al Jazeera can do better.
