They aren't illegal simply because the land was part of the British mandate which was the last legal sovereign. Jordan was an illegal occupier and the PA is only an autonomy. So as long as the land is lawfully purchased (and yes, the settlement's land was purchased) a Jew has a right to settle there - since that was the Mandate's law. Popping up nonsense like the Geneva convention doesn't hold in this case, because the land wasn't "conquered from the Palestinians" since it was simply liberated from Jordan which was an illegal occupier. So technically, its not under occupation now.

The one state solution may be the most realistic and ethical solution here now but it isn't the *_only_* one. Most of the alternatives are, frankly, appalling ethically and unlikely in practice although just maybe the 8 state "Palestinian Emirates" one might possibly work or some sort of federation with Jordan and the re-absorbtion of Gaza into Egypt? Thing is, the people deciding what solution is adopted are going to be the people living there themselves - the Israelis and the Palestinians - and, yes, that includes Hamas and Likud at each extreme and since they are so consumed by their own narratives and hatreds and so stuck and unwilling to see the common Humanity of each other, well, I wish I could say I saw some cause for hope but if there 's any faint glimmer of that it seems a depressingly long way off. Liek many lifetimes away sadly. How do we convince both sides that neither is going away and they have to learn to share and get along without killing each other? Dunno. Suggestions welcome, means of persuading each side to see that welcome.
