The museum director says "you can never know what you will get" then sues the guy. If this is a story line that wasn't intended as the prime focus of the piece, it now surely is. Perhaps Jens Haaning wanted this from the beginning. People who are interested in knowing how much a museum pays someone to provide some paintings for an exhibition should like this piece. Or questions like where the line can be drawn between good and bad, and where something is so bad that it leads to repercussions. Remember reading a Donald Duck cartoon where they went to a museum with essentially the same piece, frames with canvas. But it didn't spark the same questions. It's also similar to the black square by Malevich, and different.

It is art, surely. But he was paid a fee and provided those additional bank notes in order to produce commissioned artwork. Not just any old "art" A particular piece. A recreation. If i pay an artist 60k and provide them with special paint and canvass to "recreate" the Mona Lisa... the artist cannot simply pocket the supplies and the fees and say "this is all part of the magic show" This is breach of contract. Theft. And conversion. All three.

If recreating the art they wanted would have cost him too much out of his own pocket why didn’t he bring that up in negotiations on the price and decline their offer if it wasn’t financially possible for him? I mean I guess the court didn't "get it" either. lol "The move sparked a lengthy legal battle, which culminated in a Copenhagen court ordering the 58-year-old to return 492,549 kroner ($109,641.05) of the total 534,000 kroner the museum sent in 2021.The court ruled that refund was equal to the sum minus the artist's fee and cost of the canvases." I'm confused about the numbers though because everybody has a different calculation. Google says 492,549 kroner is $45,767.42 right now, some other website said he was give $84,000.... I'm trying to do the math to see how much he was SUPPOSED to keep for himself, but this isn't working out. Has anybody done the math?

If the artist didn't pull a stunt like this then there would have been zero media attention, the gallery moaning about finances still paid for it and got mainstream attention in return. The performance did what it was meant to and the artist got their payment, if the gallery insisted on a specific artwork and that was delivered then sure he's at fault but all the gallery wanted was attention and now that they've got it they're complaining? Maybe think about art rather than paying for pretty pictures
