Islam Karimov was Uzbekistan's first and only president. He led the Central Asian country for more than 25 years,
brushing off accusations of authoritarianism and brutality.
For many citizens, Karimov represented stability. He defined what it meant to be an Uzbek.
Karimov died this week, at the age of 78, after suffering a stroke. His funeral was held on Saturday in his hometown Samarkand.
What comes next remains unclear. Elections will be held in the next few months, but given Uzbekistan's history, they aren't
expected to be free or fair.
What will his death mean for Uzbekistan and the region?
Presenter: Richelle Carey
Guests:
Peter Zalmayev, Director of the Eurasia Democracy Initiative.
Marcus Papadopoulos - Editor of Politics First Magazine.
Andrew Stroehlein - European Media Director at Human Rights Watch.

The Representative of the First Magazine speaks right . Karimov was very competent and strong politician and he did a lot for Uzbekistan. Now whole country is missing Karimov's period.

The guy from London is constantly just saying the former dictator isn't as bad as people say. I mean, he hardly says anything that actually has to do with the topic of his successor.

Why did u leave Uzbekistan? I. Have an Uzbek friend who's also really scared to go back but never shared with me why she's scared. I wish I could help her but don't know how.

I never said it's everywhere like this. But you may be a regular citizen living a regular life and nothing makes u look suspicious. But not everyone is like you, some of your fellow Uzbek citizens are accused of atrocious things simply because they dress a certain way or lived in a certain place and I won't get into these details. And if you really were a patriot, then you would be thinking of these people, not just yourself. Stand up for your Uzbek brothers and sisters who are weak, the government doesn't need you because they are strong enough. And u know what, I apologize for the way I talked. I hate being rude, but calling a person you don't know a terrorist really makes me angry. And honestly, you should reconsider who is brainwashed, because once u find yourself calling people terrorist the second they disagree with you, that's a sign of trouble. Once again, I apologize for the way I talked earlier

Sarvar calling us stupid is uncalled for. And I don't see how what you said proves me wrong. You practically confirmed what I said. And if you think that persecuting people is a legitimate thing simply because the government has no other plan, then your argument is unreasonable since not all people who dress a certain way are terrorists and treating all as if they were is simply a crime. Plus, if I were a terrorist I would probably try to look different from the stereotype, I'd try to look like some hip hop loving idiot. Makes no sense. And again, no need for being rude.

yes i can speak uzbek, but i know what happened in 2005 i saw it with my own eyes, innocent people were killed, old ladys, children, women . i dont mean to be rude but the president did not take good care of the people, there is barely any electricity and the sometimes the lights dont work, we have plenty of electricity in uzbekistan but the president sells it to russia, he just wants to make money, he dosent care about the people , he is a real dictator , you have no human rights ,i think the people deserves better, i love uzbekistan i really want to go back, but i just want the police and the goverment to pay for what they did in 2005 or at least admir that they killed innocent people just because they were protesting for their human rights

So-called democratic slogans and demonstrations of Syrians and Libians brought long lasting anarchy which is far more harmful than dictatorship. Totally agree with objective statements of Marcus. Others just seemed biased and so jealous of Uzbekistans peacful situation that they are so fast to dictate as to what Uzbekistan needs to do to please them.

Shame this man died. He wasn't against Islam or that nonsense. He was fighting the salafist movement Hizbut Tahrir, and other wahabbi sects that deserves to meet their fate in pain and suffering. I read the report that jews felt more safe in Uzbekistan than Europe when Karimov was in charge.

exactly! But what realy dissapoints me is the banning of azan and the uzbekization of Tajik/farsi in Samarkand and Bukhara. It's really demeaning and takes away from the cultural organicness of the nation, but yes, I understand he wanted to fend off wahhabism

I've read all previous comments about Islam Karimov and Uzbekistan. Firstly, isn't Uzbekistan one of the rare countries that have provided "a 12-year totally free education to all citizens", "free public health care" and "regular free care to older generation". Yes, Uzbekistan does all of them. You believe only media (that work for someone's own interest! Secondly, they talked about the city Andijan 2005 events. okay well, wasn't that event similar to Syria case now? - Absolutely yes! Look what is happening in Aleppo and throughout Syria. Islam Karimov's policy was totally right! And one more thing, if you are clear, nobody ever disturbs you. All those people in prison were relevant to the event. Thirdly, Islam Karimov built Islam University, thousands of mosques, madrasahs and made it easy for our people to make the pilgrimage (Hajj) safe flight to Mecca. Briefly, under his leadership, we celebrated our tradition, culture, religion and others. there are more than 130 nations in Uzbekistan but we don't have discrimination, we treat each other based on the content of the speech not the color of the skin or religion. Finally, we, the youth of Independent Uzbekistan believe in our country and current leader. This kind of propagandas and scandals can't change our beliefs. and WE DON'T LET ANYBODY TO DO SO!As for Democracy, please tell me which country has it. The US, that the majority's vote was nothing as compared to electoral vote. There is no Democracy in this world.
