Dutch also brought enslaved Indonesians and west Africans to work on a cape colony when they colonized South Africa . Van Riebeeck wanted to enslave the locals who had a year early rescued a Dutch ship and hosted its people with great hospitality. He read their kindness as weakness . The company refused his request to enslave locals because they still felt indebted to how they had not only rescued their employees but kept them in great hospitality till Van Riebeevk came to get them so they approved Van Riebeeck to bring slaves from west Africa and Botavia , later indentured servants from India were brought too .

I am proud to say that my grandfather was one of the heroes for Indonesia yet my father and mother went to study and acquired their postgrad degree in the Netherlands and I was born there too. Personally I have mixed feelings about the apology as I also gain benefit from the Netherlands but I dont think these apology will change anything that has happened or will happen significantly. I just hope that if the Dutch government is truly sincere about the apology they will lend a hand on helping Indonesia with its problems to create a better future for all of us although it will never change what already happened.

Well, in my opinion, the reason why the Dutch need to apologize(although I agree violence is happening for both sides), is because the Dutch is the one who started it and basically the agressor. In my school, we taught that the Dutch were very welcomed at first. And then they monopolize the trade and meddling with local conflicts, thus leading to the death of hundred thousands of Indonesians. Well, history is a lesson. And for a bit more POV, my Grandfather is a veteran from Indonesia. He's from Kediri, but stationed at Semarang. He loves telling the story on how he and his squad ambushes the Dutch convoy, and running away from machine guns and mortars while laughing. I swear it. He seems overjoyed and said, "Who said risking life is terrifying? It's fun you know. We run and run, the ground is exploded around us, while the Dutch shooting at us using their machine guns".

🇮🇩 maybe yes, we will never forget - 🌍Dutch East Indies.!!!. oh 🟢 Al Jazeera English.. You must know!. That is the world we seek, But we can only achieve it together√. I know there are many -- Muslim and non-Muslim -- who question whether we can forge this new beginning? ... Some are eager to stoke the flames of division. and to stand in the way of progress. Some suggest that it isn't worth the effort -- that we are fated to disagree. and civilizations are doomed to clash. Many more are simply skeptical that real change can occur√. There's so much fear | so much mistrust that has built up over the years. But if we choose to be bound by the past, O 🌏Al Jazeera English! - we .. will never move forward√. Thank you. And May God's peace be upon you all: Indonesian people!. # Thank you. 🌏 ### .

Sukarno murdered all Sultans and minority leaders then tried the same in Malaysia Brunei and Singapore.. And now an apology to those murderers .. What a disgrace. Indonesia is a colonial country.

@CAPTAIN HOOK sure bro, every country has its own history. My argument was based on fair judgement. Not hatred towards your country. Just a reminder that every action has consequence. So does guilts come with remorse. My suggestion was to help you and next generation feel ease about what your great grandfathers did to our country. Give back what your ancestors take by offering more n more scholarships as mere compensation to our sad memories during colonial era back then

It was not war....but it was the INTRUSION - illegal intrusion on the Indonesian people. Simple word of APOLOGY cannot undo the murder, massacre and genocides of Indonesians. Indonesians are not slaves or indebted to the Dutch. It was not only the people but their lands Dutch confiscated and the all the natural resources robbed and reaped matters the Indonesians pride. APOLOGY does not stand on words but huge amount of compensation need to be paid. Lastly, when does the Dutch do the same to Malaysia and the Malaysians?? Your 400 years of colonisation and equal ill-treatment to Indonesians are the same to us. We need your answers.

Sure it was violent on all sides, it was war. But so was Vietnam, and Iraq, and WW2. To say it's okay to commit massacres just because "its war" is like saying Hitler didn't do anything wrong. It is in fact, almost exactly the same as saying that. "It's just war, there is gonna be violence." The Dutch: Murdered up to 100k Indonesians after already enslaving them for 300 years, probably killed way more before the war even happened.

Terrible? Indonesia has one of the brightest future's ahead within its socio-economical standing which is due to its internal independence which would not be possible if it was still a dutch lapdog. Indonesia has 170 Billion USD more than the Netherlands from its GDP and a 2022 census as lead that its growth excels the Netherlands. This is also supported by the fact that Indonesia still has an abundance of raw natural resources which allows it to commit towards personalised econonomical growth without major external interference. Though many factors within the Indonesian state needs to be adressed such as living qualities, GDP Per-capita, educational resources, etc. it is far from "Terrible".
