Damn, I have just found the fact that Indonesia is the only ex-colonized nation that refused to use their former colonial master's language. That should explain why neither English or Dutch become first language in Indonesia and I find that cool as hell. I have just found that my country Japan ever colonized Indonesia and I am sorry for that. In Japan, we are never told about atrocities our country has ever done.

@@thebinalz Sadly like other ex-colonizers, Japan refused to openly admit the wrongdoings they did. This is shameful to my country. I am surprised that Indonesia has made a lot of progress like now. Indonesia in my opinion is not a backwater country anymore, with huge over 1 trillion GDP, Indonesia is not a country to push over. If Indonesia can make use its domestic market at maximum, Indonesia can be an economic powerhouse.

This is basically how it’s seen from the Dutch’s point of view, Indonesia has its own version. Thank you for the effort, but you’ve made some mistakes, including mistaking Suharto for Sukarno, and calling Sukarno ‘Achmed Sukarno’ which was never his name. Sukarno was just Sukarno, he didn’t have the usual Western ‘first name-family name’ naming pattern. He was born Kusno Sosrodiharjo, son of Raden Sukemi Sosrodiharjo and Ida Ayu Nyoman Rai, but he never did use his father’s surname of Sosrodiharjo and went by a single name, Sukarno.
@spacetator69
@spacetator69 9 ай бұрын
"Achmed Sukarno" is never his name indeed. But he used it when it comes to international delegacy, let's say it's for the purpose on his pasport. Since I doubt people use single name at those times. As for his name, indeed his birth name is Kusno Sorodiharjo. But there's story when he still young, he often get sick. Thus his father changed his name to "Soekarno" since birth certificate isn't a thing way back then. "Soe" means good, while there's several interpretation behind the meaning of "Karno".
@kilanspeaks
@kilanspeaks 9 ай бұрын
@@spacetator69 he never used the name ‘Achmed’ as such. Whenever asked whether ‘Achmed’ was his name, he pointed out that the only name he had was the name given to him by his parents, Sukarno. But he didn’t mind it either, as the name أحمد has a good meaning in Arabic (‘praised’). As for the origin of the name ‘Achmed’ we don’t know for sure, but the most popular theory that it came from Indonesian students in Egypt. According to historian Rushdie Hoesein, Indonesian students actively campaigned for Indonesia’s independence within the years 1946-1947 using Islam as the main sentiment to gain Egyptian support. When asked whether the president was a Muslim, a prominent student from Indonesia named Zein Hasan claimed that the president’s name was Ahmad Soekarno to prove that he was indeed a Muslim. That was how he was known as Ahmad Soekarno in Middle Eastern countries. The theory was, the Western media picked it up from there, and as they’re not used to the idea of having a single name, they happily accepted it as the truth. The name ‘Achmed’ is specifically popular in German and Dutch where it fits their orthography. Birth certificate has always been a thing even since colonial time, known as ‘geboorteakte’ then. Going by only one single name is normal in Indonesia, it’s not until recently that the government changed the regulation for passports to have at least two names on them. सु- (su-) indeed means ‘good’ or ‘pure’ while ‘कर्ण (karna) is a character from Mahabharata, his name bears the meaning of ‘ear’ in Sanskrit. In common Javanese dialect ‘karna’ becomes ‘karnå’ but transliterated as ‘karno’ due to limitation in standard Latin alphabet. Hence ‘Sukarno’ means ‘good Karna’ (Karna was loyal to the antagonistic Kauravas in Mahabharata) or ‘good ear’ or maybe a ‘good listener’ if that sounds better.

That's the western version of Indonesia especially from dutch perspective. In Indonesian perspective, the discussion of united Indonesia already started in 1928, as Indonesian called as youth pledge where many scholar from different part of dutch-indies make a convention The japan and dutch military aggression basically the same But one element that completely cut off from that story is the Indonesian diplomacy that convince many kingdoms in java, Sumatra, birneo, bali, sulawesi, etc to united under one flag which is Indonesia They support indonesian independence movement by donating their gold and money, giving their army and also their land even authority as a king to join Indonesia Is not Indonesia declared their independence on java and sumatra first then they gradually claiming and fight through military campaign to stole ex-dut h indies land.... One of critical reasons why the US retreaded its support for the netherland was because the republic although crushed, in fact it was not completely eradicated, and by that period many republican leaders who tended toward the left started to seek armed support from the soviet and china. Now imagine what would happen if a spark that the netherland failed to extinguish, was instead refuled by the east bloc. Indonesia will become the first pandemonium of the 3th WW. Especially when the netherland stubbornly tried to hold new guinea. You can see how seriously indonesian was in matters regarding their independece, adding fact that soviet was also known to generously shares their nukes like they are sharing som kind of biscuits to their allies

Yes, and Soviet had full support to Indonesia during conflict with the Dutch on New Guinea, Indonesia military become the largest in the region during the conflict, due to soviet military equipment flooded Indonesia and big war after WW II would be started and escalated immediately. Just translate My commet up there. I won't make It English because mine is not that great.

It will not be possible, because all colonial countries that provide visas to their colonized countries are countries that have been liberated by their colonizing countries / have succeeded in having a large hidden influence on these commonwealth countries even though they are secret and hidden For example the UK and its Commonwealth countries which are given free visas!

Great video! This explain the reason of my father who studied in the Netherlands said that Dutch (and probably most of the Western/European countries) acknowledge the Independence Day of Indonesia is in 1949. In which, contradictively opposite with stories I learned in history class in school, and contitutionally we have 17th of August 1945 as our Independence Day. We are now celebrating the 78th years of Independence. Despite the debate on which year that actually Indonesia is independent, I just want to correct some of the picture and graphic used in the video are irrelevant: 1. The picture of Soekarno and Royal Dutch Family is actually Soeharto (the 2nd President of Indonesia); 2. The map of Indonesia, during those timelines (between 1927 and 1949), Timor Leste is in the territory of Indonesia, just like West Papua, although they were colonialised by the Portugese until 1975 and officially become Indonesia's in 1976. They gain their independence in 2002. Thank you for makimg this video.

Indonesians took their Independence chance after USA dropped bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as it weakened Japan's Army in Indonesia after they took it from Dutch. After the Allied won the war, Dutch came back and annulled the Independence of Indonesia. Indonesians tried to fight back the Dutch through diplomacy. After years and years finally Dutch recognized the Independence of Indonesia. I'm really grateful for All the Unsung Heroes who fought for Indonesia's Independence. Wow, you're so informed about this, I'm touched. But, let me correcting some little things: - 1811 - British occupied Indonesia by force from Netherland, end by British got Malaca, the Malaysia, Indonesia was still by the hand of Netherland and some to Portuguese. - 1945 - Indonesia gained independent from Japan, not Netherland, it was when Hiroshima(Aug 6) and Nagasaki(Aug 9) got bombed. Netherland couldn't occupy Indonesia at that time cz war with Germany - 1945,1946 - British army came to Indonesia to take control of the situation but in actuality they came with Netherland army and wanted to occupy Indonesia and it soon cause war again. Nederlands-Indonesische rondetafelconferentie was the negotiation name that finally make Netherland back down. (There's 1 last thing after that, war for West New Guinea, end in 1969).

Indonesia did make a mistake by invading East Timor, although in fact it recruited East Timor into a special province, and prospered it. However, due to different historical backgrounds, we (Indonesia) had to conduct a referendum so that there would be no bloodshed. Meanwhile, for Papua and Aceh, it is still historically bound to be part of the Dutch colony. despite how cruel the Japanese occupation it was actually the West who invaded Indonesia more and the longest it was starting with Spanish then the longest is Dutch/Netherlands now and then British then we have the battle for independence where Dtuch invades the country again. some vets that live to this day who experienced the war for independence still hold hatred toward the Netherlands. my grandpa told me he would never forgive the Netherlands despite they had already given a national apology, the hatred is already permanent to him and even in his grave. the damage from the War of Independence 1945-1949 is an insult to many veterans because the Dutch thinks Indonesia's independence if 1949 but in reality Indonesia gain independence on August 17,1945 2 DAYS after Japan surrendered to America.

Japan really helped Indonesia achieve independence, even though the Japanese tortured it more cruelly than the Dutch.

Because japanese realized that they would lost in WW II. So japanese promised independence for indonesians. It was atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki that changed all. Japanese surrendered to allied. So there was a vacuum administration in Indonesia. The Independence was declared as soon as possible. So our independence was not japanese giving.

on the behalf of Indonesians : HELL FUCKING NO! we are under new WORSE management, if we have to give our thanks it will be for USA to NUKE Japan.... TWICE, everytime i saw documentary how brutal it is the nuking, i cant shake the feeling well, sorry for your sacrifice, but we wouldnt hope another way because of the pain you caused us, but yes those innocent shouldnt be the consequences for that. and yes we did got help from japanese, but fuck japanese of that time, we rather be colonized by deutch again or even british than japanese, those clusterfucks was brutal only in fucking 3 years compared with deutch that colonized us in 3 fucking CENTURIES, we did forgive them now but a scar still there. we just recognize our japanese hero Tadashi Maeda and NO ONE ELSE

They were looking for quick support, so they promised to help by establishing the institution that helped indonesia prepare for independence in exchange for soldiers and compliance. Although they probably didn't planned on giving Indonesia actual independence

Sometimes I sit down and think about why Indonesia was colonized was for the spices and other natural riches, but its the spices that kicked the dutch's economy up. Only to find that westerners uses only a pinch of salt, a spray of fresh grounded black pepper and a ton of cheeses in their recipes /s Meanwhile Indonesia and India both uses like more than 10 spices in many of their foods ._.)

this is still reflected today, their food tends to be bland and only revolves around salt, pepper, fat and cheese. and still they dictated what the best chef and cuisine is. great irony

Your picture at 4:20 has the wrong text. It is not Soekarno it is Soeharto, meaning it doesnt come from the independence war period. It came far after probably 1965-1970. below is a link with the picture explained
