Last year, we met Otis Johnson at a New York City shelter for ex-convicts. Everyone there was trying to get their feet back on the ground. Otis had just got out of prison after serving a 44-year sentence. The last time he had seen his family was May 1975.
When we shared Otis's first story of being reintroduced to the modern world, viewers were amazed by just how unfamiliar everything was to him. iPhones, Times Square, jars of pre-mixed peanut butter and jelly ... everything was new or starkly different.
His story clearly resonated with people. More than 12 million people watched Otis' story on KZbin, and we wanted to show them what happened next.
We went to Asbury Park, in New Jersey, with Otis to try to find them. Reconnecting with family was something he had said he was always interested in doing, but hadn't got round to yet. After all, he was still learning how to navigate the city. He had a small box where he kept old, tattered photos of family members, but that was basically all the information he had on them.
"The only address I really have is Asbury Park," Otis told us. So we took the train to Asbury Park not knowing much.
But we did have Otis' memory. Once we arrived at the train station and began roaming the streets, small things about his old home slowly came back to him: extended family members, friends, shops. He wanted to find his aunt, Dottie Moore, and some other family members. He said many would probably think he was dead.
When we talked to Otis about his relationship with his family, his answers were complicated. He was a member of the Fruit of Islam (the paramilitary wing of Nation of Islam, the Islamic religious movement once famously led by Malcom X) in his younger days. The Nation of Islam's stated goals were to improve the spiritual, mental, social, and economic condition of African Americans. Otis was a devout Muslim who said he helped "clean up the streets" of drug dealers.
"We wasn't all bad," he would say.
But Otis said some of his family members didn't buy that. He didn't know if they would be angry or happy to see him after all these years away. He had a nervous energy about him as we walked down Pine Street, knocking on doors and asking strangers about Dottie Moore.
This final story on Otis Johnson is one of reconnection and reconciliation. It is the story of a man on a quest to reunite with remnants of his past and one, we hope, many can relate to.

www.gofundme.com/otis-johnsons-home-fund Here's the official GoFundMe page for Otis Johnson. He's lived in a shelter since he got out and the fundraiser is primarily to help him get out into a single room or apartment. He's working with social workers that know the housing market in New York and if enough money is raised he'll finally have a place on his own. Otis was innocent, the case itself reeks of racism and system failure. He never had a chance with an overworked and unenthusiastic public defender. Check out the video on the GoFundMe page and stay tuned for more short film updates. Peace, Kari Bjorn

My heart cried out for Otis and the emptiness he must feel of losing family and close friends of his childhood. Reconnection to those he went in search for was warm, but I was bitterly disappointed that no one had the empathy to realise he needed to be with family or close friends to feel reconnected / belonging to the outside world. Being incarcerated for 44 years of one's life is unimaginably lonely and causes a deep void in your heart and soul. May God be with Otis always

No family left other than my 92 year old father who I'm taking care of while my brother lives his wonderful life and only calls him on Sundays, no kids, no husband, no boyfriend, no job, no money, def. no savings!! Don't know how I ended up this way but I did and life goes on so should you like it or not. What else to do? ... cplcabs Oh no, don't say "we" know they're just as bad as the KKK because they weren't! They didn't kill people because of their skin color. They fought for equality--the KKK didn't. Go learn something.

your information is stored in atoms and molecules and to be conscious you need a continuous exchange of information. energy(as you refer to it) is a neuter and can't store information. to store information you need atleast a binary system. the moment you die and the blood-and oxygensupply of your brain stops, it's cells start to die, and all the information dies with it. also little sidenote: energy is useless without entropy. we don't notice energy, we notice the FLOW of energy.

how is he so calm. 44 years in prison for attempted murder? I would be so angry when got out. Basically lost his entire life from that sentence that im pretty sure was based purely on his color and who he knew

Otis was angry, but a man that was attempted to go through the cleaning proccess (in prison for that long) is far more wise to look at life than politicians and some "big men" you have today.

gar morales it's not a scam. It wasn't set up by me, gofundme required verification from Otis himself before the guy in New York filmed him for the campaign. Don't donate if you don't want to but don't dismiss it as a scam.
