All 10 Nimitz Class Aircraft Carriers Comparison
The Nimitz class is a class of ten nuclear-powered aircraft carriers in service with the United States Navy. The lead ship of the class is named after World War II United States Pacific Fleet commander Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who was the second-to-last living U.S. Navy officer to hold the rank, preceding William Halsey Jr. With an overall length of 1,092 ft (333 m) and a full-load displacement of over 100,000 long tons (100,000 t), the Nimitz-class ships were the largest warships built and in service, until USS Gerald R. Ford entered the fleet in 2017.
Instead of the gas turbines or diesel-electric systems used for propulsion on many modern warships, the carriers use two A4W pressurized water reactors which drive four propeller shafts and can produce a maximum speed of over 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph) and a maximum power of around 260,000 shaft horsepower (190 MW). As a result of the use of nuclear power, the ships are capable of operating for over 20 years without refueling and are predicted to have a service life of over 50 years. They are categorized as nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and are numbered with consecutive hull numbers between CVN-68 and CVN-77.
All ten carriers were constructed by Newport News Shipbuilding Company in Virginia. USS Nimitz, the lead ship of the class, was commissioned on 3 May 1975, and USS George H.W. Bush, the tenth and last of the class, was commissioned on 10 January 2009. Since the 1970s, Nimitz-class carriers have participated in many conflicts and operations across the world, including Operation Eagle Claw in Iran, the Gulf War, and more recently in Iraq and Afghanistan. The angled flight decks of the carriers use a CATOBAR arrangement to operate aircraft, with steam catapults and arrestor wires for launch and recovery. As well as speeding up flight deck operations, this allows for a much wider variety of aircraft than with the STOVL arrangement used on smaller carriers. An embarked carrier air wing consisting of up to around 90 aircraft is normally deployed on board.[citation needed] After the retirement of the F-14 Tomcat, the air wings' strike fighters are primarily F/A-18E and F/A-18F Super Hornets and F/A-18A+ and F/A-18C Hornets. In addition to their aircraft, the vessels carry short-range defensive weaponry for anti-aircraft warfare and missile defense. The unit cost was about $8.5 billion in FY 12 dollars, equal to $9.36 billion (2018) inflation-adjusted.

Some of these ships you hear about all the time and there's a lot of value received from them. Others you never hear of them except when they were launched (maybe some are for training) They said they would last for many years but haven't heard about them in decades, some are even pretty new and I never heard about them doing much of anything. They are nice though.

France or the EU should purchase some of the Nimitz class as they retire ,especially France since they have a nuclear carrier already. I know they are in the process of launching a new carrier build program, the Nimitz could save them money on development costs and can be upgraded or modified to their standards, this way they can get a modern and effective Supercarrier in shorter time and have the ability to purchase more than one. Thoughts?

@@clavier2560 the French Navy lack the facilities to service a Nimitz Class Carrier. It looks like after abandoning plans to build carriers based on the Queen Elizabeth carrier the french government is going to build and launch a new carrier when the Charles de Gaul is scheduled to retire.

France can afford to do so, and it would help restore their Naval projection to what it once was. But, building a new again has become a point of civic pride (viewed as a jobs creation item) and Nationalism (stupid) after planning for its successor of the Charles De Gaulle (a great carrier!) the PA2 flopped in public support (high costs). Going the Logical route is also stymied a bit after France lost out on a submarine contract to the US for Australia. This was taken personally in the French media and some. Their next carrier the PANG, has more power than the Nimitz with 25% less displacement and a far less amount of crew, but less if an air wing. Plus the nuclear reactors in the Nimitz, is fixed, or it cannot be replaced. The new carrier has a catapult will be essentially a rail gun to launch assist an aircraft. Even if all goes to plan, this would still place France's Navy with 1 major carrier, until close to 2040, after sea Trials. It would be to their advantage to take in the Nimitz, even if it requires some initial changes and retrofitting to make it fit for 'their' purposes. Plus, it should be a win win, and something the US would agree to (so long as we're done on both sides with Autocrats like Trump & Le Pen (who should both get divorced, marry each other and move to Moscow, or stay in their respective countries and face upcoming criminal charges). :)

By the time these ships retire, they will be outdated by at least three generations. Besides, the US would never sell one.

China? Their carrier are basically clones of: Kuznetov + Gerald R Ford But they don't have experience with carriers so even if they copied the highly advance Gerald R Ford they still wouldn't have efficiency with their carriers and slot of things will break down frequently. Things breaking down is expensive to repair and the current situation of china won't help them gain money just lose money. China is on the verge of using to much money and now bankrupt
