Just to remark on the fact that one of the strongest things about your posts to the public of the world is your honesty. I'm from the UK. If you have suffered, or have felt under pressure, or possibly been threatened for discussing political issues in your nation, I understand your caution. To be fair "smug turd" is pretty good, and he *did* admit to being briefly entranced by Ralph Nader. With that said, I totally agree. And for the kind of people (garbage people) who are practicing intimidation, their end goal is your silence. I think it's great that Papa Andy spoke up when he did, but I respect his decision to pull back now, after all we are all complex humans but what he wants out of this channel is to be the Bike Farmer. I hope we will get his opinions from the rant stand again when the time is right! And I love the timing of him dropping the Bikes for Kids video (even if it was just a happy coincidence because Working Bikes had a container to load), it shows the difference between someone doing something good for real in the world vs. antisocial haters typing away on a keyboard.

I just don't see very many disc brake bikes in my shop. Most of the "bread and butter" bikes I deal with just got disc brakes within' the last 5 years or so. It's gonna be a bit before they circle around to the surplus markets. Being too honest during the election was detrimental to the health of the channel and got way more personal than anyone ever needs it to get. Authenticity is a paramount value for me, and this channel, but I also need it to grow and don't want it becoming my identity...it's a weird balancing act! Definitely doing some soul searching. Reminds me of my childhood when I didn't care for anything and would get a new bike every few years whether for birthdays or Christmas. They were K-mart / Toy Store bikes, so you know they weren't going to last. At age 14 in 1979 / 80 bicycling became more than kids stuff when I started riding just to see what was out there due to moving into a new state only a few months into my freshman HS year. New to an area and really not making friends, I would just start riding further and further to pass the time. But my bikes were not lasting that long. Later at age 15, the combination of buying my first bike shop bike (better quality) - a Schwinn Traveler and paying with MY OWN MONEY that I had earned cutting grass and a weekend job, the bike lasted longer than my previous five bikes combined! That was a $200 bike when a typical big box store / Kiddie City / Toys R Us bike was only a third that. My parents thought I was insane to spend that kind of money on a bicycle. They said it was more than their first car. Ha, my most recent bike is 3X what my first car was.

Mech Tektro trick - Loosen caliper mounting bolts a little, squeeze your brake handle, reach down while holding the brake and retighten the caliper. this will automictically center the caliper to the rotor.

Not only Tektro. It's even easier on 2piston hydra brakes because you don't need to first Click in (advance) the worn pads.

The basic shimano MT200 hydraulic brakes are awesome. I work at a shop, and have seen a higher failure rate among avid BB5s. Actually, if I recall correctly I have never seen a failed MT200 setup. With practice I can adjust them faster than mechanical disc brakes as well. They are very messy to bleed though, and the big issue with them on bikes that don’t get maintained is that since they are “self tension adjusting” (in very loose quotes) people can tend to wear them down to, into, and through the backing plate of the pads, chewing up rotors pretty good.

Youth sports: Usually the parents are the worst part. The vitriol comes from the benches first, and the kids learn from there. In adulthood I came to finally enjoy sports, but it was pickup games where the goal was fun, not domination. It always warms my heart when a stronger player would pause things to switch to the weaker side to keep things balanced, and people cheer for great plays regardless of which team did it.
@BirdmanDeuce2628 күн бұрын
I used to work sports retail. The skyrocketing costs, in both time _and_ money, really severely warps both the parent and child's relationship with the sport. So many youth sports programs have degenerated into feeder programs with parents trying to prep their kids for the draft, with no such organization/support for the ones who just want to play with their friends/for the love of the game.

When it comes to straightening the RD hanger I use the valve for alignment, the reduction in error is really useful for 11 speed when it matters more, I wouldn't care so much if it was 9 speed or less because accuracy matters less. Your talking about the bits n bobs cabinet reminded me of our "Garland drawer." Garland had been a coworker of a coworker who was infamous for having lots of stuff left over after he repaired a computer. Rather than sorting the components, he would dump the "extras" into the bottom drawer of the component cabinet. So when anyone was short a screw, a jumper, or whatnot, they would raid the "Garland drawer."

The waviness on the bottom bracket only seems to be evident on the big ring. I'd guess the kid wanged it pretty hard and thus the broken chain guard. I'd wager that if you looked at where the plastic chain guard was broken it would match up with the concave side of wavy big sprocket. It's also possible that one of this kid's friend's or brother's bikes has a deformed front rim that more or less matches the impact pattern of the broken chain guard.

Here's a tip for that wobbly crank problem. If more than one chainring wobbles it's probably a bent spider arm. You can before you replace the crank try to bend it back (remove rings, adjustable wrench on spider). It's inadvisable because aluminum doesn't really bend (it cracks easily) but it might fix it "good enough for who it's for."

bet those chainrings got bent the same time the chain guard you took off in the beginning got broken. i've seen bent metal chain guards that are really good at grabbing the chain when it falls off the chainring and pinching it in there, sometimes even with the folded over metal of the guard locking the chain down in there

Mr Ross, channel creator, slight tip. I'd go over the spokes real quick with a tensionometer, but not to equalize the tensions (that would take too long) but just check for loose or extremely tight spokes. By just addressing those 2-3 spokes the wheel can probably stay true. It's kind of a needed step to ensure it doesn't just return back to the way it came in, after just a few minutes of riding. As you said, disc brake wheels need not be that true, but lose/tight spokes are going to be a problem.
@mattgies29 күн бұрын
If you're just looking for the really loose ones, no need for a tensiometer; you can find them just fine with your bare hands. Just squeeze all the spokes in pairs, going all around the wheel. Takes all of ten seconds after you develop the muscle memory.
@mikeh628629 күн бұрын
@mattgies Sure if you've got the talent. It can probably be practiced. But, often when they're crossed and touch, it isn't so easy to tap/listen or squeeze the spokes. Especially with aluminium rims you really need to get them up to 50+kgf which squeezing isn't necessarily going to get. Maybe with pracrice? Also staying under 120kgf is also tricky with feel alone.

Ooh hey, this may not be that necessary over yonder and admittedly is not an issue for everyone, but just in case you ever encounter that someone that takes offence - an old teacher’s tip: it’s often best to keep things anonymous, especially when talking about parents and kids’ names. General level description’s always fine about a person, but specific names can become problematic fast. Everyone knows everyone in smaller communities, so it’s not _that_ big a deal, but it adds a level of professionalism to what you do. If you don’t mention names, you give the client the ’extra’ service of then being able to later show other people that their bike was featured on your channel (which might drum up some more business), but at the same time you’re not making the decision _for_ them, if that makes sense. 🙂
