I had a small window where I managed to get 3 tiers of the same bike. in this case it is the specialized Aethos. I didn't have a chance to clean them before the start of the video as you can probably tell.
Let me know what you think of the differences here.
I did forget to mention that the ultegra and dura ace versions also have gp5000 tyres on them as well.

Very nice job reviewing these. Appreciate your candid findings. I rode one of the mid-range models of Aethos a couple years ago. I ended up getting a comparably spec'd Trek model, as the pandemic supply disruption was still cutting into the shop's Specialized bike supply. But the Trek was also quite a bit less expensive, for comparable components. But that ride feel of the Aethos still sticks in my memory.

The ride feel really is something else. Need to ride the Tarmac SL8 soon and the bottom half of that bike is the aethos so should feel amazing. I think you made the right choice. Most other brands you get a much better spec bike if you are buying a mid range tier compared to specialized.

Awesome video, again!! Unrelated question, I noticed the 3 different bike stands you used. Any of those you’d recommend?

I find they are all pretty good. I personally like the canyon stand which was the one in the middle. The one with the s works sometimes doesn’t work with all road bikes. The one with the 105 aethos, the rivets loosen up after a few year. I like it but has a long term disadvantage. I hope that helps a bit

How about the feel of the frame? Different carbon layups would affect how the bike feels in terms of comfort and power transfer. Been hearing everyone saying how great the Sl8 sworks feels, but radio silence when asked about the non sworks versions

I have only ridden the s-works version of this so I honestly can’t say. I wish I could. I would assume the layup is the same but they just improve the grade of carbon for the s works version.

i love it. my mind is always S works, s works, sworks! if i were to decide to blow the cash on it one day but if thats the weight difference including different group sets the base frameset with my mix of ultegra and durace would be super lightweight still.

I do believe if you are going for specialized s- works is the only way forward as reasons listed in the vid. You could make it even lighter still. Tyres, tpu inner tubes, narrower handle bars. Good shaving of 2-300g right there!

Just bought myself the comp build for the frame - stripping all the components and wheels. Totally agree with you. These lower tier builds feel off. Why put such clunky, heavy, low-quality ride feel parts on such a beautiful frame? Swapped out for SRAM Red, ENVE cockpit and wheels. NOW I feel like I have a real Aethos.

Sounds like a banger of a build! I think you have gone for the right approach. Especially if you already have the components.

Buying higher tier builds is kind of ehh to me, as specialized have 44cm bars on 58cm frames, like a bus steering wheel. Getting it down to 40-38cm would cost like extra 600 on the sworks model, with alpinist sl cockpit combo. And who wants a 44cm bars on the aftermarket lol. Also wheelsets. I would've bought an SL6 if I had the chance, but instead got the white Aethos Comp. So I'd rather have Rapides on the Aethos, so anything over Comp, you would be spending on carbon climbing wheels you don't use. Overall frame wise the 2023 Comp is the sweet spot imo. S works seatpost and fork. Same frame as on the Ultegra level (except for 2024, where it's 9R instead of 10R from 2023). Almost the same groupset.

That 12s di2 105 group set is very heavy! So it hunk that’s most of it but I think it also shows how cheap components really stack up the weight too

If you want a frame with full hidden cable but shape similar to Aethos, XDS RT8/Paruds Super EVO/Parlee Ouray is a good choice.

I’m shocked at how heavy the S-Works with Duran ace weighs, mine is in Sram Red and weighs 6.2 kilos complete with pedals, bottle cages Garmin computer and Garmin radar mounts, nothing special to try and make it light either, it’s all standard, does have the Alpinist bars to help with weight, other than that there is no weak light parts fitted🤷‍♂️

The saddle on this persons bike is a fair bit heavier that the stock one. There must be something though. Dura ace di2 has always been lighter than sram red e tap until their latest model just released. I would be interested to find out. What size is your frame?

To me they look like they’re spray painted 😬 I usually love the aethos, crux, and tarmac’s paint jobs. I’d still take that Sworks one tho

They look like aluminum bikes being carbon. Retro look, the Tarmac look or trek emonda have better appealing look for me, I like glossy paint nor sati n, but those that like retro style may love this one. What interests me about the Aethos though is all the reviews and comments out there saying that is very comfortable and light feeling bike at the same time.

I also prefer the looks of the tarmac. That have taken the bottom half of this bike and put it into the sl8 which I why people say the sl8 is more comfortable and snappier for climbing than the sl7. I am yet to ride one though.

instead of the base Aethos, just buy the Decathlon's Van Rysel RCR with SRAM Rival wireless and ZIPP 303S for 3000 GBP only downside is that it's 8.1 kg, because it's aero

I actually think that that bike will do will do some good for the industry. It could hold bike prices at their current for a few years for inflation to catch up.
