Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger are two of my favorite Joker depictions of all time, but Mark Hamill likely tops them both because of its numerous appearances across animated films, shows, and video games. Bringing it down to Live action, Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson are my favorite versions of the Joker. Nicholson is classic Joker, gangster, crime lord, and literally the comic book version of Joker brought to the screen. Heath Ledger (let’s be honest)’s joker is not just stellar in performance, but is one of the best villains of all time, even with the liberties taken from the character.

5. Jared Leto (Suicide Squad & Zack Snyder’s Justice League)-Despite being a different version of the character, that doesn’t mean this iteration is effective 4. Cesar Romero (Batman 1966)-As someone who has a good bit of nostalgia for the 60’s Batman, I can enjoy this Joker from this era of Batman, even if it’s incredibly detached from the current perception of the Batman property 3. Joaquin Phoenix (Joker & Joker: Folie à Deux)-Because I think Phoenix is one of the great actors of our time, he elevates this version a lot, but because he’s so far away from Batman, he can only be so high on the list 2. Jack Nicholson (Batman 1989)-A legendary actor playing a fantastic antagonist force, what more needs to be said? 1. Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight)-While there are superficial differences between classic Joker versions and Nolan’s version, the core of the character is only expanded and built on, which makes for one of the greatest movie villains ever put to screen

Heath Ledger’s Joker is iconic and one of the bestest ever antagonists to grace cinema. Definitely one of my all time favorite villains/antagonists. That said, Mark Hamill will always be my definitive vision of the character, and my favorite version of Batman just so happens to be The Animated Series and Arkham games, both I would say have my all time favorite Joker 👍

Haven't seen Joker 2 but... 5th. Jared Leto (I think there is something there, but the writing and direction sucks. Though I do in some way like his laugh, his design could have worked in my opinion it just didn't) 4th. Ceaser Romero (Iconic, but honestly I haven't seen too much of the original series to actually properly rank him. But what I've seen I liked just think the other 3 were better, but if I watched more of the original series I think he could rank higher) 3rd. Joaquin Phoenix (Even if I had watched Joker 2, I think he would still be at 3, I think he's great and I liked the direction of his character, but I love the other 2 too much) 2nd. Heath Ledger (Fantastic, iconic and I love all of it. But I have a soft spot for Jack Nicholson's Joker, which I can't explain) 1st. Jack Nicholson (I have a very soft spot for him, I liked the direction of his character and it being different. With him being the one to kill Bruce Wayne's parents, I thought it worked. If we could count Jerome Valeska from Gotham, he takes the cake for me. Ledger and Phoenix turned out incredible performances, but they're all definitely reimaginings of the character. My perfect live action Joker would have all the unhinged sadism of Ledger, only turned up to 200% combined with an almost Jim Carrey style physical comedy, and Gotham's the closest we've gotten to that balance of humor and horror. I also think Jared Leto was much better in his ZSJL cameo than in Suicide Squad, it seems he started out just doing a Heath Ledger impression, but finally got to find his own version of the character when they brought him back. Oh, the things we could've gotten in a Batfleck film.

Heath Ledger’s Joker doesn’t have a plan. First of all, there’s no reason why he would be a hypocrite. Secondly, what he means with “no having a plan” is that he doesn’t have a concrete goal, he plans things to have a goal at short term and if things don’t go the way he thinks, he does another thing, for instance, he was about to kill Harvey in the chase, but after they arrested him and Batman Saved harvey, his plan now was to kill his Fionce too, when harvey survives that too, his plan is to turn him. As you see, Joker is smart, he plans stuff, but he doesn’t have a clear goal, except, chaos.

Honestly I’m hoping Barry Keoghan plays the Joker well In the future unless we’re not getting him fully in the second film. I’d like to see him as Silence of the Lambs version of the character like what we saw in that deleted scene. That would be a cool way to go about him because I want to see other villains be utilized.

Although objectively Nicholson may not be the best joker, for me he’ll always be my fav just because of the nostalgia. I remember the scene where the surgeon is working on him scared me so much as a kid, but ever since then his unsettling but funny performance just gets to me. Reminds me of good times as a kid, plus Jack Nicholson just does a great job of portraying him as truly insane (maybe because he kinda is in real life haha). I just love Batman 1989, and it’ll probably always be my favorite movie.

I’m not old enough to see either Joker or FAD, but knowing that he’s killed in the sequel and is therefore not even the Joker, it borderline ruins it for me. To me, that just feels like admitting you wanted to make a Scorsese knock off, but you had to make it about a character you didn’t care about in order to get audiences intrigued, the budget you wanted, and to hide the fact you’re just copying from the best. Sorry if this is a cynical take, but that’s how I view it.

I've never seen a villain adaptation cooler than Heath Ledger's Joker, planning it as my next cosplay! Though I have to say, I do think Joker Leto's design is over hated, I really like the uniqueness of a tattooed, grill-wearing leather-jacketed Joker that looks like he's stepped out of a 2016 music video. It's just a shame that the film gave him absolutely nothing to do.

My sure to be contentious ranking: 1. Jack Nicholson - a little bit of everything. I don't love that the makeup looks like he's got a hanger in his mouth, but the throwback aesthetic gives him enough of the '40s Joker with some modern darkness. A near-perfect balance. 2. Caesar Romero - sorry, I like this Joker. It's a pitch perfect silver-age interpretation. Sure, he doesn't have a lot to do in this film, as it's primarily the Penguin's scheme, but I don't care. There's nothing about the character that doesn't work in the movie he's in. 3. Heath Ledger - yes, the performance is very good, but it's all that saves the movie because this Joker makes literally no sense. The fanboys never stop to think that it's entirely contradictory. They act like he's "an agent of chaos", but it doesn't actually make any sense because everything he does has to be meticulously planned. And then those plans are overthought to the point of being nonsense (he got caught only to break out, which he preplanned? When did he rig the ferries? What's the point of any of it?). Scene to scene he's engaging, but take a step back and the movie is an illogical mess. So I dock the CHARACTER for making no sense, but it gets points for the ACTOR almost making it work. 4. Joaquin Phoenix - mostly for the performance 5. Almost went nuts and put Leto at 4, but Phoenix is just too good an actor. So 5 is Leto, but I like him more than most.

While I agree the tats are a bit too much (the smiley face on the hand is equivalent to mustache finger), I actually don't mind the general aesthetic and even the grill of Leto Joker. To me, it's clearly the logical contemporary interpretation of the '40s gangster thing. He's a modern day gangland crimelord. He doesn't wear suits and hats, and yes, the grill draws attention to the smile because he's the Man Who Laughs. To me, the street thug thing with the leather coat and all is totally the correct evolution of the character.

Joaquin Phoenix: I think as his Own Joker, he’s pretty Damn Good, but putting him against the Joker’s we’ve Gotten, I think he’s just Decent, the only thing that shows he’s Joker though is his Face when he has the Makeup on that kind of resembles Joker’s Face, I still Really Like his Joker 3. Jack Nicklson: the only thing I didn’t like was how his Smile is distracting for Me sometimes, sometimes when I see his Smile for some reason there’s something about it that Distracts me from everything 2. Heath Ledger: come on, I don’t need explanation here 1. Jared Leto: I don’t care if People say “he’s the Worst Joker” and start spewing nonsense, I don’t care that People say he’s the Worst Joker, I Love his Laugh, his Smile, Most of his Tattoos (although I wish they put something cooler on them), his Purple Trenchcoat (which sadly he only wore in 1 Scene for 33 Seconds), and his Grills I think are Cool, I also Love Most of his Lines, there was only 1 Line that was ABSOLUTLY The Worst Joker Line you can ever Find and that’s this Line “you don’t want no beef, you don’t want no beef you don’t want no beef?” I hated that Goddamn Line, but aside from that and his Screen-Time (which is 10-15 Minutes if you watch the Extended Cut) he’s definitly My Favorite Joker and a lot of other People’s To

Live Action Jokers RANKED (in my opinion): 5. Jared Leto (should've gotten more than one film because his take on Joker was unique) 4. Ceasar Romero (a bit of a more comedic take on the Joker character without the dramatic backstory) 3. Joaquin Phoenix (first Joker film was amazing, second one was a complete disaster) 2. Heath Ledger (the most overrated Joker in my opinion. He was only in one Batman film, however, he was more dramatic compared to Caesar Romero's Joker) 1. Jack Nicholson (perfect take on the clown prince of crime, mixing jokes with some dramatic acting to make a one of a kind character come to life on the big screen) Honorable mention: Mark Hamill (his Joker voice for Batman The Animated Series and the Batman Arkham games are, without a doubt, the most iconic in media history)

You should give Jared Leto some credit for redeeming his Joker with just one scene in Zack Snyder's Justice League. Joker in THAT movie is the most cold blooded, full on psychotic version of the character in live action who makes it clear that his sole purpose for existing is to get under Batman's skin.

I fully concede that I’m being charitable here, but I read Arthur denouncing Joker as a madman who had a moment of clarity and wished for the madness to end. He still started the true decline of Gotham and inspired the origin of Batman. Not bad for a poor sadboi with a power fantasy.

Then “Here, we, go”. 5) Jared Leto: Because Jared Leto. 4) Cesar Romano: I respect him for being the first live action Joker, but he’s eh compared to the big three. 3) Jack Nicholson: It’s just Jack Nicholson. 2 & 1) Joaquin Phoenix and Heath Ledger: in the first movie, Phoenix was the Joker baby. In the second movie (which I heard sucks), he’s not. However in the Dark Knight, Heath Ledger was playing the Joker. They’re a tie, they’re both the Best Joker actors in live action. Personally any one of the voice actors who’ve voiced Joker including Mark Hamill, beats all the live action movie actors who’ve played the Joker.
