I'm a model railroader. We always have limited space and always want more room for our layouts. I've partially solved this issue by utilizing a strategy of "measure once, cut twice". This effectively doubles the size of the layout because I have to re-do most projects when I make a mistake! I see you have adopted a similar plan. If you become really skilled at this tactic, you will never run out of fun things to do on your railroad because one error will lead to another to another to another, ad infinitum. Carry on!

This is where a locomotive would come in handy these long or heavy wagons can be heavy and can be hard and tiring to pull around after some time I think you should continue working on that (Air powered) locomotive you were working on months ago I think it would really help
@Corvus.26062 жыл бұрын
I know this was some months ago now, but it might be worth adding some gussets or diagonal bracing to the ends of the flatbed where it connects to the wagons, you're exposing those welded butt joints to quite a bit of force and the repeated load/unload cycles will lead to a fatigue failure. adding a diagonal brace will prevent some of that movement.

@Conn6532 жыл бұрын
I suggest securing the plywood to the inverted troughs. Add a 2" X 4" X 8" block to the edge where the wheels of the wheelbarrow are to stop. This will act like a bumper. Do the same for each leg of the wheelbarrow. This will keep the wheelbarrows from sliding off. When you lift the handles, the legs will rise above the bumper as you pull the wheelbarrows off the platform.

An interesting idea might be to use a ropetow between the rails attached to a stationary engine/motor to move the wagons. Avoids the complexity and cost of a locomotive.
@BattleshipOrion2 жыл бұрын
Might be worth it if the line was steeper, but the loco is still gonna be needed if the thing fails...so there's that. Especially considering available materials, the cost of said materials over a given span of time, climate, dynamic loading, and keeping the line on a budget. Locomotives on this kind of scale are cheaper in most parts of the world, as they can be made using a engine as small as a single cylinder, & bike chain (plus the other components). Plus it's more worth while to have versatility over simplicity. Not only that, but if done right, and you have a powerful enough engine, PTO could be an option for helping unload bulk loads (vibration).
@ivoryfields26312 жыл бұрын
both. both is good

That's the beauty of living in a country where they still allow the free movement of people, hence why you can use French person power. Over here in the UK we no longer have that luxury. Am glad this part of the railway works, you need to work out a pulley system that ties in with your static engine, which would help retrieve your muck wagon from the garlic field. You could also use it at harvest time, when moving the garlic from the garlic field. I say you need to work it out, because I have absolutely no idea how it would work. 😂🤣
@Youchubeswindon Жыл бұрын
What a nonsense statement about using the French. They might be long term, but are probably short term in Ireland, and that would be covered by the reciprocal 90 day tourist visa that UK citizens would have to Schengen and vice versa. French and other Schengen citizens come to the UK to volunteer under WWOOF, free board and food, they just can't get paid for it. Also you obviously didn't watch the video properly to think that it would be in anyway feasible the muck heap to garlic run can be powered by a cable from the stationary engine.
@gwyllymsuter45512 жыл бұрын
railway design is sensible. Capable of increasing productivity greatly. Only one input I can offer is to run the railway through the centre of the garlic beds after harvest. A few cars dedicated to taking the harvest on racks and you could drive them straight into a drying tunnel. Harvest directly to the cars and let em dry on it. Same size has your wood chip cars but whoth horizontal mesh trays. Honestly the suggestion only is about minimising human handling time and distance walked.
@DirtbagGospel2 жыл бұрын
You could use modified wheel barrows that have quick-change handles and perhaps even wheels so that they can be more compact on the railway and have the handles slotted in when needed
@ratchet1freak2 жыл бұрын
even just handles that hinge down instead of stick out will help a lot for clearance issues. Maybe (once the budget is there for it) custom wheelbarrows that have more muck space in the bucket and are more compact on the car could be an option

This looks really cool, I think you should try to build a magnetic break like on a rollercoaster for the bottom of the hill. That way you could push it off at the top and it will auto slow itself down even with full load. Its just a 3rd rail made from steal and then some magnets on the cart itself. You could make a mechanism on the carts that when you push it up hill again you can lift the magnets off the 3rd rail so they don't have any resistance.

Hey, really dumb idea here, what if you were to make your own wheelbarrow that's just a frame with a smaller, wide wheel, and small rails on it, that hooks onto the rear/ front of the wagon for transport, and then have trophs that ride on rails that are on the train wagon perpendicular to the middle part, that you can slide onto the frame of the wheel barrow? So you'd have like 5 trophs/tubs that you can side load onto the wagon with one wheel barrow frame It sounds super complicated, but I think it wouldn't be a big deal for a crazy chum like you that's basically playing Factorio in his back yard. Just discovered this channel yesterday, what a treat!

Two thoughts sir. 1. you need to build a mucker like they use in a mine. I was just thinking a guy could put an axle with rail wheels on the back of the wheel barrow(s) and figure out something for the front that would be easy to install & chain the together & forget about the car all together. A pair of rail wheels up front might just push over soft ground just fine🤔
@wayoutwest-workshopstuff62992 жыл бұрын
you mean four wheels instead of one?!
@pvtimberfaller2 жыл бұрын
Exactly, they already make two wheel wheelbarrows. the two back ones could be pretty small 3”? so they would clear the ground when using the wheel barrow. 4 small rail wheels set underneath in such a fashion that the tyre would clear the points & all you had to do to empty it would be to pick up up on the handles and wheel away.

11:02 If the plan was to use a horse to pull 6 barrows and two Frenchmen can move 4 barrows, we can therefore presume that if the horse is good for 6 barrows, i.e 1 Horsepower, we can assume two Frenchmen is 2/3 of a Horsepower or single Frenchman is 1/6 of a Horsepower. I therefore submit that we use the "Frenchman" as an additional fraction for the measurement of power output, 1 unit of Frenchman (written as Fm) being the equivalent of 1/6 of a Horsepower or 124.2 Watts.

Rather than controlling the speed downhill by holding it back with a rope, an upgrade could add a platform on the rear bogie where you could sit/stand and operate a handbrake. A simple rim block like your locomotive has should be fine. One axle alone may not have enough traction to stop that heavy load so it may be necessary to link the two axles of the bogie using a chain or tie rod.
