bro I'm learning a third language right now is this real so basically it works just like a/an in english, the suffix(idk if I even chose the right word here lol) starts with a consonant if the word ends with a vowel, and it starts with a vowel if the word it's getting attached to ends with a consonant. This is so nostalgic, it reminds me of when I was learning whether I am supposed to use "a" or "an" at school. I am also learning korean on duolingo and tbh duolingo works well in a weird way but they kinda go fast and don't explain every single thing, you eventually memorize them all but when they go "같 is gat, 갇 is also gat and so is 갓" I don't understand the reason and they don't tell me the reason either so here I am trying to learn that part myself ( ; -;)👍
@kyu2813 Жыл бұрын
Yesss, that's EXACTLY how it is haha you nailed it. It's like a/an in English, it's just cuz it's easier to pronounce. And as for 같 갇 갓, it's true that they all sound basically the same "gat" but that's only because we stop the sound and don't continue pronouncing the rest of it. (In super technical terms, the ㅌ ㄷ ㅅ sounds are "unaspirated" meaning that there's no puff of air that comes it after, unlike the English t d s sounds, which are aspirated) If the next syllable has an ㅇ in it, like 아 (ah), then those bottom ㅌ ㄷ ㅅ sounds will carry over, like: 같아 gat-ta (means "like", "as") 갇아 gad-da (means "to trap") 갓아 gas-sa (not a real word) Hope that helps!

It all makes sense but I do have one question, how do you know when a character needs a batchim? Is it after every single character or only certain times?
@kyu2813 Жыл бұрын
Oh! I should have included this in the video but the third character is always the batchim. For example: 사 is made up of ㅅ + ㅏ, only two characters, so it doesn't have a batchim. But 산 is made of 3 characters, ㅅ + ㅏ + ㄴ, and the ㄴ on the bottom is called the batchim. Was that what you were asking? Let me know! 👍👍
@kiyokoshimizu8219 Жыл бұрын
@@kyu2813 yes that is kind of what I’m asking, I’m trying to figure out how to word it correctly lol So like at 5:31 how you are only adding the batchim particle at the end of the sentence, how come you didn’t have to add a batchim particle after the other characters like 한 or 국 but only after 람? And along with that is my question , how will I know when to add a batchim particle and when not to?
@kyu2813 Жыл бұрын
Oh I see... ~예요 or ~이에요 are not particles, but it means "to be" in Korean. But if you do see a particle in a sentence, it's always going to have some kind of meaning, so you can think of particles as just regular words. For example, the "particle" 이랑 in Korean means "with" in English, so if the sentence you are trying to say doesn't need a "with" then you don't need to use it. And 한국 사람 is like one word meaning "Korean person (someone who is of Korean nationality)". So to say "I am Korean", the word order would be: 저는 / 한국 사람 / 이에요 I / Korean person / be Both 예요 and 이에요 mean "to be", but we used 이에요 in this sentence cuz the previous character "람" had a batchim. If it was something like 저는 / 크리스 / 예요. I / Chris / be We use 예요 instead because the previous character "스" has no batchim. It's just for easier pronunciation, kind of like how we have two versions of "a" and "an" in English. Hope it makes sense!

@kyu28132 жыл бұрын
glad it helped!! But as for the sound changes in Korean, I don't think you need to focus so much on it. It's a well known phenomena that is common across all languages, and it's more going towards the study of linguistics rather than learning a language. People study these sound changes (allophones) in a field called "phonology", and it's a very complex science and has very little to do with actually learning a language. It's more useful for building stuff like text-to-speech programs. Basically, these sound changes just happen because things are easier to pronounce that way, and the way our mouths produce the sound. I think it's just best to just learn sound changes case-by-case when it pops up and not overthink it. Just like why is the "b" in "lamb" silent, or why is the "s" in "dogs" pronounced like a "z" rather than an "s". Hope that helps !

Does that mean I can use whatever for the batchim? Like (은, 이,이여요,을,으로) As long it has a circle?
