When Preastley won his first World title in 1991 he used a copper tungsten dart that he had bought in the late 70s that weighted 26 grams. But as copper tungsten darts are softer that wear down so by the time he won his first title they where 13 grams. He later went up to 15 grams and then 17 grams for the last couple of years. Bdo player Richie Davis used a homemade 13,5 gram dart. Im such a nerd.

I started throwing a 20g, then switched to 23, and am currently using 24g Red Dragon Pegasus darts. I'm finding that I like my darts on the heavier side with a longer stem. I need to give those Loxley 32g ones a try! Thanks for the content!

@R.C.Bullar2 жыл бұрын
The biggest benefit of a lightweight dart is that it will correct itself quicker ,in flight, when compared to a heavy dart. The reason is because it allows the flight to work more substantially and your darts will be straighter even with a poor release. The length plays a big factor as well. A long, heavy, setup will have the slowest correction speed. A short, light, dart will have the fastest correction speed. Good video cheers
@notoriousjt31622 жыл бұрын
So does your shot need to be more precise with a heavy dart? Since it has a slower correction time you need to be more accurate right off the throw, no?

Another interesting thing to consider is the throw of Bunting vs. Searl. Bunting is very snappy (like yours worldwide) vs. Searl from my memory is much more smooth/fluid and less snappy. That in my opinion is the difference. Take Barney or the Bronze Adonis and give them heavy 28-30 gram darts, they would probably do better than a really snappy thrower like Roby or Bunting. With that said, there are obviously exceptions to my theory, as you mentioned the Asp, he has a pretty snappy throw and uses what are considered heavy darts. Great video! I prefer heavy darts all day! 25-28 grams for me please! Much love and respect from Niagara Falls Canada 🇨🇦

I'm always impressed when people step to the side of the oche and reorient and still hit a 180. I feel like the quicker i throw all 3 the more accurate I am. Like the longer you wait to throw the next dart the more you lose the muscle memory of the last thrown dart and it's hard to replicate the exact same line and weight of the previous throw. Nice delayed 32g 180
@bobbygalyon55802 жыл бұрын
That means your technique needs work. If you have good technique with consistent accuracy then you can comfortably throw without the aid of muscle memory and momentum, those are just added bonuses when you've mastered your technique. Let's say it's the first time I stepped up to throw darts for the day and I was aiming for tremble 20,I'm most likely going to hit it with my 1st or 2nd throw but definitely within the first set I throw. I'm going to hit it, at least that's how it's been for 7yrs+ . Now if I hit it on my 1st throw, which is I'd say about 75% of the time I do, if I then walked away because I had a phone call..then after returned to throw darts, I'd more then likely hit it again my 1st throw 75% of time without the aid of the muscle memory from when I threw before I took a phone call. You should already have great existing muscle memory every time you throw..even if it's your first time throwing for the day. Its all about technique don't depend on the momentum and muscle memory from throwing quickly, it's does help but focus on technique and you'll get that muscle memory to accurately consistent at anytime, even to side step and readjust. You'll be more concerned about how to fit your darts in the triple when you have a dart that landed in a bad angle, you wont think about losing muscle memory if you step a side , because you already have muscle memory of great technique lol

Back when I was 17 and started throwing in league (1991), I was given a set of 24g darts (I still haven't found out the make/model, they're a little different from the norm, but LOVED THEM)... and the weight was just right. I threw lighter darts, and then heavier, but the 24g darts just did the trick. About 7-8 years ago, when I got back into darts, I've dropped down to 23g darts. I tried other weights but it always seemed like I had to put more muscle into lighter and heavier darts, which didn't help trying to keep accuracy. Like the gent says, let the dart do the work, not your muscles. Lighter darts will be easier to throw over the long haul, though I'm sure one can build up endurance with heavier darts if you keep throwing them more and more. I have 26g Piranha's and it don't take long to feel the extra weight, lol. *I had a buddy that didn't like any dart weight, too light... then he found some 36g harpoons. He loved them, lol. :D

Weight is just one of many variables when it comes to the perfect dart. other variables such as barrel shape, stem length, flight size and grip pattern, also plays a role. which variable being the most important, depend solely on the player using them. And sometimes a slight vaiantion in one of the variables, requires a major varition in another pattern. E.g. you might have used a 23g hour glass shaped dart, but once you change to a 24g dart, it needs to be bomb shaped. I personally play with a 19g Harrows Assassin, but on occation I had to lend some 23g drop shaped darts, which surprisingly was almost as good for me, as my own darts.
@Kasian13 жыл бұрын
Robert Marijanovic (Robstar180 on KZbin) actually says the opposite. Over the years, he slowly went from 18 all the way up to 23 gramms saying that he looses "feel" for the darts over the course of a long match. Therefore, he needs more weight to keep that feel. Martin Schindler also said that he tried out light darts and completely lost feel for the darts when playing for a longer time. But I think it comes down to personal preferences and opinions. Every player might experience this differently. Thanks for the video!

Wayne Mardle was discussing Buntings increase the other day, as they have been for months 😂 and he suggested that perhaps Stephen just started with 12g at a young age and just stuck with it. I feel this is most likely. The majority of players don’t dive in thinking about flight shape, stem length and weight. They just throw what they have and adapt their throw around it. I started using brass pub darts as we all did, then when I was 12 I bought the most expensive darts in the Red dragon catalogue. Young me figured more money meant better darts 😂 they’re 28g and I still throw around this weight 20 years later. It’s hard to change. How you first discover and develop your throw is surely massively dependent on what you’re throwing? And once that’s locked in……..

Professional players play in some really long formats right? The average dart weight of the top 32 PDC players is 22 grams. That's on the light side. I think a heavier dart might be easier to throw for a few turns or maybe even a couple legs of darts but over the distance I think a heavier dart will be less forgiving. My only "proof" of this is looking towards the pros. They use light darts for a reason right? If heavier darts were "better" then we'd see more of them using heavy darts. Fact is we don't.

You would assume heavier darts take more effort to throw?
@WorldwideDarts2 жыл бұрын
That's been my findings. Look at the top 32 in the PDC... They use a barrel that weighs 22 grams on average. Heavy darts are not ideal to play well with over the distance. A heavy dart works for only a few select players
@stewartneale18233 жыл бұрын
Looks like you let them go a little easier when your engaging with the camera while throwing. Do you agree and if so, do you think being preoccupied helps with the dartitis?
@WorldwideDarts3 жыл бұрын
I think I'm just used to talking and recording videos at the same time. It's become comfortable for me. In a way i sort of get pumped up to throw well when it comes time to record a video. I seem to throw some of my best darts when I hit record. A bit strange isn't it? But yeah, no issues with dartitis in a long time. 👍🏻

I get severe pain in my inner elbow and occasional clicks when throwing, I have only played darts a few times and love it so don’t want to give up, would a lighter dart benefit me? Or any other advice?
@pth49592 жыл бұрын
I had the same issue and pain with my elbow, I threw 24g for about ten years, then decided to try something lighter I'm now using 14g designa ultralights and I don't get the pain any more I can't throw the 24s any more! They feel like lead weights! Maybe grab a really cheap light set on eBay and give them a go

@@pth4959 funny enough I got some 16g Ultralights and played with them for a few weeks, then when I went back to my 24’s the pain was almost completely gone! I now switch between both sets to try and test myself!

Heavy darts can fly slower, light darts have to be thrown faster so this might influence your performance.

Is there any adjustment to getting used to a steel tip compared to a soft tip? I primarily play in bars/bar league, but I've noticed serious players use steel tips. Also, are there leagues that play with soft tips?
@WorldwideDarts2 жыл бұрын
Yes, tons of leagues around the USA... assuming you're in the USA, that play soft tip darts. Imo the adjustment is minimal but keep in mind I test out all sorts of different darts every week so it might be a little easier for me to say that. All in all it shouldn't be too hard to adjust between steel and soft tip

I would be more comfortable with a 26-32gm dart for the rest of my life. I am 60 already. 30 years ago I threw 28gm darts very effectively, but took 25 years off a few years later. I am now throwing with a 24-26gm dart.

@@WorldwideDarts I am from the USA. Currently in SW Virginia. I just tried some darts I had from 30 years ago. I weighed them out at 13.9gm average. They were some old Bottelsen soft tip darts with hammer head conversion points in them. With just a few minutes of playing with them I was able to manage to throw them as well as I can with heavier darts, although they didn’t go very far into my Winmau Blade5 double core board.
@WorldwideDarts2 жыл бұрын
Okay, here's my theory. I've noticed that American players tend to use really heavy darts. I believe there's a reason for that. For the most part we only play best of 3's and most of the times it's team events like doubles. So we're only getting a turn every 45 seconds or so. Probably longer. So we can get away with heavy darts as our arms never get a chance to tire out. Now compare that to the overseas players who play longer format 501 all the time. On average the top 32 professionals use a dart barrel that weighs 22 grams on average. Maybe they prefer a lighter dart as they play really long matches and are throwing every 15-20 seconds? I've always found it odd to go to an American league or luck of the draw and see players using 28g and up. It's a very common thing as well. But as with all things darts it doesn't matter (for the most part) what sort of equipment a player uses. Ryan Searle uses 32g bombs and he's about as good as they come.

@@WorldwideDarts I actually play in the Dart Player Florida League (DPFL) and we play best of 13 in my bracket. In the better brackets they play up to best of 21. I don’t seem to have a problem with 24-26gm darts for that length of time.
@WorldwideDarts2 жыл бұрын
@@NorthStarAttitudes I'm more or less talking about what we've typically seen for the last 30 years or so here in the states. All the ADO events back in the day were best of 3's. Most of them still are. Thankfully we're starting to adapt to longer formats though. 24-26g is perfect though. But there are still a ton of American players using 28g+. Lot's of knurl and a crazy amount of spinning stems too. Just part of the culture here.
