Jake, AKA the mad scientist, dives deep into the inner workings of the detonator, covering how they work, and the differences between them. Watch a few of them blow up and what their destructive force can do against random items. Though he is a genius in the lab and operating the camera, he isn't the greatest at presenting before the camera. Not everyone is perfect though.

Then the next step up is to do your 5s course we call it, then you get into really working with all types of ordnance from pressure plates to grenades rpgs anti tank and anti pers mines how to disarm them what the hazards and fuses are ect and learnt to be a infantry platoon or sections explosive breacher as well as second in command in the engineer section.Then next step is EOD if you're in the top percentile for this type of work. Hi, I used to have a friend that participated in civil war reenactments. They used a type of cap to fire their cannons. It had a wire that came out at one end at a 90 degree angle. They hooked the lanyard to the loop in the end of that wire. Ofcourse they jerk the wire out and ignition. The pyrotechnics at those reenactments were always awesome. Very realistic. Nothin like a brisk concussion with your coffee in the mornin. Haha. Just found your channel. Yes I'm enjoying it. Thank you.

When I was a kid growing up in rural Missouri in the 1960's we use to have a yearly class on the dangers of blasting caps. We were shown what they look like, and told very sternly to never touch one, to contact law enforcement and let them deal with it. Kids had been known to have whole hands blown off by the caps so we were told. I never came across one during my childhood, probably just as well.

When my friend and I used to make bombs as kids we used a home-made electric detonator. One of our bombs went off by itself once when we left it on a metal surface in the bright sunlight. We believed that the sun heated the exposed bare wire enough to fire the internal explosive. No one was near it so no injuries. However, that experience scared us so badly that we lost interest in bomb making. This was likely a good thing as I am now an old man alive to type this.

Oh yeah, schooltime bombmaking, massive nostalgia for me. Saying that i was more than lucky to survive my hobby a few times. One occasion, very simplified: me and my accomplice loved experimenting so much, we dreamt up a chemical fuse. It consisted of KMnNO3 and glycerine. We tried it in open air just wetting the KMnNO3 and it worked in around 2minutes just as advertised. We put the purple stuff right in centre of our 1/2Kg deflagration granade (staple of soviet railway ground resistor cast-iron housing , a half-sphere hollow with steel screw-top). Around KMnNO3 we just put some primer anf kind of tannerite variation for the blast. Drilled a suitable hole i on the side of ~15mm thick casing and epoxied a syringe needle inwards, that it reached the centre with reagent and primer. I got the honors of taking it to the woods behind our school on tge lunchbreak, stuck it in the ground beneth a tree and took the glycerine syringe to it. To add to the mayhem, most of my class followed us, some of them refusing to keep the stones-throw distance i asked for, hiding behind ntrees next to device. Well, i connected syringe to the needle, tried to inject for few seconds, seemed like it's too compressed inside, but on harder press it seemed to move some liquid, so i rose,, warning the clisest daredevils to run, took two steps, and at that moment, few seconds after taking my handd off the granade, yes, it hit mr from behind like a.. well, blast wave. We were all in shock, covered in thick smoke,

@mahashma449
@mahashma449 3 жыл бұрын
That's because remotely detonated explosives can be accidentally triggered by stray RF transmissions on the right frequencies. It's annoying when your neighbor's garage remote opens your door; it's fatal if a radio squawk initiates a detonator while you're in the blast radius. In my (limited) experience using radio dets meant being able to set off a charge without needing to run 100' of wire through the brush to a safe location when using electric dets.

Nonel tubing, according to specification, is a hollow tube that has an extremely light coating of HMX and aluminum powder. which probably has a much smaller critical diameter than PETN . Talking food and explosives. I think myth busters did a spot on tenderizing steak by submerging, both the steaks and a stick of dynamite in a barrel of water. Imagine doing a cooking show with (tongue in cheek humor) where foods where prepared using explosives. It would be a hit. The cook would wear a hat like a mushroom cloud,. he would cook on an open flame using RDX plastique, which apparently is a great heating fuel . Soups , salads, meat loaf, puddings could be good candidates.

Placing a blasting cap in water causes a shock wave many times stronger than in air as illustrated in this video. I had the chance to witness sort of the same thing when, as a boy scout, way back in the last century, one of my fellow scouts somehow had acquired (I believe at that time they were made of mercury fulminate) blasting caps. He put one in the water of the toilet in a modern outdoor latrine, closed the lid and proceeded to blow it apart. The broken porcelain was strewn all over the floor. [needless to say I was impressed by the damage, and intimidated to stay quiet, I suspect he was never caught for this act]

Seems like the right place to post this. So if I'm understanding it right, in the case of PE, the blasting cap sets off the base explosive inside of it, which has enough concentrated force to set off the plastic explosive, right? And that typical movie methods of setting it off (Shooting it or setting it on fire) don't provide enough concentrated force.

You can literally set C4 on fire and it won't explode. Bullets don't hit fast enough. (As he says in the video, the blast front of a detonator is moving ~7,000fps or around 2-3x faster than a bullet).

When I was working at small underground mine: caps and non-el detonators were the single biggest cost after diesel. That’s wild y’all are making your own.

Two strand wire. Clip one side an inch shorter than the other. Strip short side by 16th inch, long side strip 3/4inch. Clip long end of all copper strands except one or two copper strands. Wrap the strands around it’s insulator back to the short end and solder to the short ends lead. Stick it in your fun plug of choice and go

I liked your video. It was very educational. I'd like to suggest using a raw chicken to emphasize how destructive a cap can be to flesh. Folks need to realize these are not toys but serious tools.

I’m not a professional blaster-my granddad was. RULE No.1- When using non electric caps and cord type powder train fuse, when you start using a different or new roll ALWAYS cut off approximately the first 6 inches or more and discard it. Reason-the end may have been exposed to high humidity contaminating the center powder train, vibration and handling may have loosened the powder granules affecting the burn rate. RULE No.2-ALWAYS verify the burn rate by a measured piece of fuse. Burn rate is (or was years ago) approximately 120 seconds per yard or 40 seconds per foot. **[NEVER TO BE TRUSTED]** but time checked accurately with each new roll of fuse. An older article in a book about 10 survival stories related that during a drought in Africa a man volunteered to dynamite for fish to feed a native village. He was in a boat alone with dynamite, fuse and caps, lighting then throwing the dynamite with a small weight attached which would detonate below surface sending the stunned fish to the surface to be gathered by native tribesmen for the villagers. Having used up the old fuse he started on a new roll, either unknowingly or in haste he ignored rules #1&2 . Having dynamite and cap in one hand he lit the new fuse which made a strange sound and within seconds had burned down almost to the cap. He stood up quickly, cocked his arm back to throw and get rid of it-BAM!!-it exploded in his hand…the next thing he knew.. he was in the water..the boat was gone..where his hand had been only bone splinters remained.. the natives in other boats, thinking him dead, took off and left him alone out of fear of being involved in his death. He survived a dangerous swim to shore in waters with crocodiles. Wish I had the book name and author for you guys but it got away from me like good books have a way of doing. Moral of story - you had better learn some basic rules about handling explosives 🧨 or stay away from them until you do.

Cool video, especially for those who don't know anything about this. My old man was a powder monkey so I got to see all these things growing up, unfortunately times have changed a lot to where you can't just go blasting old growth stumps and such with nitro anymore,..lol. Keep the videos rolling brother!

I was taught that the detonators are the most dangerous item to deal with. C4 won’t accidentally explode while handling it. Detonators, however, can be set off by a static electric charge. Bye bye fingers…

my teacher made a thermite mixture in a porclain evapoating dish on an asbestos mat, on top was some sodium peroxide and a magnesium ribbon stuck in it. He went to turn off the light and the mixture set off by itself. It flared up with the reaction creating molten iron. It didn’t actually explode. I know that sodium peroxide can react with moisture in the air to burn whatever it was mixed with. In this case magnesium.

The black powder photograph, presented as being the first made over a thousand years back, was not. Several hundred years back the fine, dust powder was made into tiny pallets rolled in shellac. This was water resistant and with gaps to allow the propergation of flame front, much faster burning. Not yet a high explosive.

They reliably launch bricks into the air. We used to have a heap of detonators at a house i lived in when i was young. The bricks would make it abut 4 metres in the air sometimes. The golfers on the course that was next door to us hated us though they never called the cops for that.

I made my own electric matches, using soft copper shooting wire, looping around a needle then using a steel scrubber micron wire true the loops, and crimping, folding over, twisting the wire together, and insulating by cutting the loop. using a 9-volt battery to fire them. the pyrogen has a very small amount of thinned cellulose to prevent corrosion on the nichrome wire in storage. if I was in Australia I would be arrested again for sharing this information.

I won't mess with fulminated metals either. There are only two that are easy to make. The first one might self detonate while you're making it making it a no go, and the other uses toxic heavy metals that if you aren't prepared to properly dispose or neutralise the waste, dont bother.

I know you guys are the experts but you’re wrong about the 5.56 casing. You have the fuse in backwards. Illustrated in the TM 31-210 US army manual it calls for the primer to be drilled out and the fuse tightly pulled through. The explosive is tightly packed and the open end is pressed into the explosive.
