Really good information, most people only know you mix A with B and it sticks stuff together, so this substantially expands our knowledge of epoxies.

Hi Bruce, just had a look at your axn build, which I have just got another, but now like LIPO's they dont ship glue... at all from H king. Looked at your epoxy glue vid and you said you were doing more vids but cant seem to find any, that aside any recomendation on a glue for the axn? I have used a rubber contact glue before with ok results but thought you might know of something better? Thanks

hi there, I enjoyed watching your video on epoxy glues. I have just built a super frontier senior 46 which is very similar to a sig kadet senior. the wingspan is 80 inches. when I glued the two wing halfs together wth epoxy along with the dihedral brace a noticed I was left with a slight gap where the wings join. I filled this gap up with thick epoxy. do u think I have added too much weight to the wing? kind regards aidan mcatamney

Im not going to get into the chemistry here but I will point out that epoxy bonds to the surface via a chemical bond and not really with a mechanical bond like many people think. Most people think that roughing up the surface provides a "keyed" surface like noted in this video and makes the epoxy lock into grooves mechanically. The mechanical component here is actually pretty minor and what you are really doing when roughing up a surface is providing a significant increase in surface area for the chemical bond to take place. Another thing worth noting is that parts to be glued need to be very clean and free from oils. Oils (even from your skin) can cause poor bonds. Some types of wood can even have enough oils in them to make glueing an issue. Many plastic parts can have release agents used to allow the plastic part to be easily removed from molds. These release agents are often difficult to remove from plastics because they are actually in the surface of the plastic and roughing it up with sand paper just spreads around the release agent and does not remove it, which is why it can be hard to glue some plastics. In most epoxy products, it's not that one product is "better" than another, it's more to do with one simply has better properties for a given application over another. I would like to see epoxy manufacturers using a hardness measurement to indicate the cured epoxy hardness which would be very helpful in choosing an epoxy for a given application.

helicrashpro Thank you for your excellent and illuminating reporting. Does Epoxy 330 (not in your report) need surfaces roughed up when it’s suggested use is on glass or china? A lapidary jeweler suggested it for my fused glass adhesion with sterling silver. May be out of your area of expertise?

Good Job in sharing your knowledge, it is really appreciated. Question: What type adhesive do you recommend for holding electronic connector blocks together, for example the two connector blocks that connect to the receiver board on a DJI Phantom 2, I recently had to replace this receiver board and the original connections to this board had white flexible glue on both sides of connector, between part on the board and part on cables....

Awesome videos mate, very informative. Is it true that if the ambient temperature is too low, epoxy will NEVER set, ie when the ambient temp rises, it still wont set once it has been mixed and applied? Also which other glues are more suitable for gluing horizontal stabs and wing halves together?

By any chance have you done a piece on and American product known as J.B. Weld? I've used it to repair some major damage to my heli airframe and I rather like the way it bonded the polycarbonate parts. It's also sand-able in my opinion. Lightweight as well, so I don't add any unnecessary weight to the heli overall. Thanks. Enjoyed your review of these products, BTW. Quite informative. I learned a thing or two.

Nice description of the polymerisation process. :-) I usually use L285 manned aviation grade epoxy. 55minutes low-viscosity, 700g for 20 bucks. That amount will last for a quite long time. But there is also quite nice standard grade epoxy for half the price. I think much stuff that has "for rc models" written on it is overpriced. Sometimes it makes sense to bake the epoxy, but i don´t know the english word for that process. ^^

the strength is not based on where you buy the epoxy or who the manufacturer is, it's only based on the cure time. usually 5, 15, or 30 for bonding epoxy. bob smith makes all the diff kinds, the 5 will be brittle and the 30 much more flexible.

Spent most of this video curious yet annoyed at what I thought was my mistake in getting epoxy to glue back a broken abs plastic ebike panel. I was sure I'd got the 'useless for my purposes,' type of epoxy and was annoyed at the bad advice I'd taken from people in what to use to repair it before I'd bought. So I was glad for the final part on successfully gluing plastic, where you described the cheap 2 tube acrylate stuff, because it appears that is what I have, now I'm wondering why it's even advertised in the rc world as being epoxy? It's a lil confusing to a novice with the stuff.

great video, now I know that the two little A+B tubes I bought are really good glue. However, I still don't know how to use it exactly (and how long it takes to harden) since there simply won't be any readable manual when you buy it. Just a notice: only use in ventilated areas. The manual (on the backside of the cardboard the tubes are packed on) is in damn freakin chinese. No way I could decipher that :( well I'm gonna try it the way it's been suggested for the other glues in your video and hope it will work :-)

A good way to get close to equal amounts of the two parts is to weigh them. Use a digital scale that measures .1 or.01g or less, set mixing container on the scale, add (for example) 3g part A and then add 3g part B and there you go. A lot better than eyeballing it.
