all good info. commercial growers do not flush before harvesting! Tomatoes like an EC of around 3.5 mS...and cherry tomatoes are near 5.0! High EC creates generative development, and builds flavour and nutrition. Of course they have super good control over their fertilizer solutions.
@Just4Growers
@Just4Growers 8 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's crazy high EC for the cherries! I've tried to deliberately overfeed tomatoes for various "experiments" - and I can personally testify that it really takes some doing !!! In my overwatering video I show some over-fertilised toms-that was 8.0 !! (Yep, that worked.) :)

hehe. It's funny how, when I was a newb, I'd kill plants without knowing what happened. Now that I've got some skill, it's hard to kill them. Take liquid samples from a Grodan cube with a syringe (run off is NOT reliable). When the pH/EC matches the nute solution, you're just about perfect. No guesswork needed. fyi, check out Grodan's 6 phase growth manuals.

One thing you left out. Measuring your ph run off and how to decipher what it means. For example, if your run off ph is lower than the ph in the nutrient solution that is a sign of nutrient lock out occurring in the plants root zone. On the other hand if your run off is coming out at the same ph or about.1-.3 above the ph of your nutrient solution that is a sign that your plants are feeding properly and maybe are even up taking nutrients faster than you are making them available (in the case of it reading .1-.3 above your input ph). In which case you may need to slightly increase the EC of your nutrient solution.

Good question Yeshe! If possible, remove the pot from the wicking system tray and top feed with half strength nutrient until 30% of what you have fed comes out the bottom as run-off. Discard the run-off or dilute 50% and use it to fertilize your lawn or house plants.

Questions for all the bud growers. So I've been doing hydro for quite some time now and have never flushed my res. To be honest, I've never seen the need and always had good outcomes. I'm thinking I would like to try it to see if there is any diff in the outcome. So my 1st question: Can I simply pump out my main res from time-to-time and change out the water/nutes (which flows into two separate reservoirs where the plants are), or do I need to remove the plants and clean down everything, which would only be possible when the plants are small anyways. And my 2nd question: How long can/do you guys let a res run without anything planted in it? I was prepping my 2nd tent but it's been close to a month and a half and the clones are not ready to go in yet. There are no nutes in it and I have been adding a small amount of bleach once or twice a week to keep everything clean (water temps are at a constant 65 f ) Should I just pump it out and leave it dry from now on after a grow and simply fill it a week or so before needed? Thoughts?
@Just4Growers
@Just4Growers 5 жыл бұрын
Hello buddy. For a res change you simply need to pump the spent solution to a drainage / collection point. As long as you are maintaining a reasonably clean growing environment there’s no need for anything more while your plants are in mid-cycle. As for nutrient solution waiting for plants, just try to keep it away from direct light and you should be fine.

Ok, so I have a recirculating system I change each week.. I am a new grower, so this is all new. You are saying flush each time I change my nutrients? And how long do I flush for at the end of veg? And do I flush then for a week at the end? And also at the end of Flower do I just reduce to half strength.
@Just4Growers
@Just4Growers 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Dylan, you don't need to flush each time you change your nutrients. Just keep an eye on the EC / PPM of the leachate (run-off) before it returns to your tank. Towards the end of flower you should start reducing your nutrients gradually. The final week you can use pure water if you wish.

What are the benefits of adding peroxide to a flush? Does a build up of old dead roots really harm the system that much? Is flushing for 1 hour with 0 ppm water enough to get most of the insoluble nutrients from a perlite only media after a month of no nutrient change out? I am just not sure of good way of detecting how much insoluble nutrients are in my system at any given time.
@Just4Growers
@Just4Growers 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Askiro. I would recommend an enzyme-based product (i.e. Hygrozyme) to clean / sterilize old dead roots rather than H2O2 unless you are seeing signs of root rot / pythium. Flushing with 0 ppm water is very aggressive and I would suggest using a 1/4 or 1/2 strength nutrient solution instead.
@askirojadu
@askirojadu 8 жыл бұрын
Ok so when I flush I add 0ppm water to a 600ppm reservoir. After 3 flushes the reservoir ppm is about 150-200ppm. Then I add my nutrient to get the reservoir ppm to my target of 1000ppm or 1300ppm. So the plants are deprived nutrients for the time it takes me to flush (about 1-3 hours). The plants show no signs of stress from flushing, so I really don't think its that aggressive. Adding 1/2 strength nutrient just to flush means I am throwing out a ton of nutrients which just seems wasteful as hydroponics is already pretty expensive as it is. I have considered using products like Hygrozyme, but I figure the old roots will eventually just get removed little by little every time I flush, so I am skeptical if it is really necessary but I will probably try it just be sure. Thanks for the response. I think flushing and lockout are the 2 biggest topics that hydroponic growers just don't have a firm understanding of so I appreciate the video.

I do a weekly flush of the system with 1TBS Physan 20 / 50 GAL of water. I set my ebb & flow system to flood/drain once every couple of hours. Next day I back flush the expanded clay pellets (helps lower dried in salts), drain the tanks and refill with water, nuets and Hydroguard (to bring back the good bacteria.) That goes for a week and I do it over again. And cool roots are defiantly a must! I pump the tank res through a cooling coil in the freezer of a small refrigerator to keep the tanks cool.

I have had difficulty finding a scientifically sound reasoning for the idea of "mineral build ups" in finished products. what minerals specifically and can they be shown to have falsifiability as far as negative impact on finished product? I ask because I remember back on the old OG site when the idea really blew up, I remember the thread actually and I've yet to see more than anecdotal evidence of any improvement in quality or yield from leaching. I've seen a ton of "connoiseurs" talk out their asses though.
@truthspace5525
@truthspace5525 8 жыл бұрын
bcbudinto This is a good question, as I remember those threads on OG. It has been proven to improve taste in some crops to flush before harvest. Usually the flush is to reduce mobile macro nutrient levels in the plant tissues, mainly nitrogen and phosphorous with marijuana. I think it would have a lot to do with how hard you push your nutrient concentrations, and whether or not you grow in a medium that retains salts.

Hey Everest my Botany professor wants to know the physiological reason why people flush or leach. She says she doesnt flush any of her plants bc she wants the highest brix level. Do you know of any scholarly or peer reviewed or university papers or studies on the topic of flushing or leaching. She says all this information is anecdotal and just another myth from Cannabis growers.
@Just4Growers
@Just4Growers 8 жыл бұрын
+Dyelon Joyce firstly Dylan, cannabis growers are arguably some of the best gardeners on this fine earth - however I've heard a few "anecdotes" in my time too. Brix levels are not the only fruit. Or, to put it another way, surely reducing the concentration of dissolved mineral ions in solution over a week or more will have the consequence of reducing their respective concentration in the plant itself over that period of time. For some crops this practice can improve tastes and aromas, in others, not. My example of tomatoes is perhaps contentious as I am aware of commercial practices but tobacco, certainly.

I've seen all of his videos and he doesn't speak too quickly. If it's too quick, I suggest waiting till after the video to consume some of your plants.

Fast speaking ruins this video. what's the rush? You're videos are very informative it's just so hard to retain anything you say when you speak so fast. very annoying.

+Diana Stouraitis Thanks for your feedback Diana. It may interest you to know that this channel was born out of frustration - but stemming from videos being too slow! So maybe I've gone too far the other way but I'm sure I will find my feet eventually and strike that happy medium. Anyway, apologies for any vexation.

Whatever you do, don't actually show the act of flushing a plant. Only talk about it! I have watched several videos on flushing and rarely does the person actually show the process of flushing the plant. Talk about a crappy shuddering video.
@Just4Growers
@Just4Growers 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Max, thanks for your feedback. You make a valid point and I have taken it on board. When flushing, try to achieve at least 30 to to percent run-off compared to what you water in. I am planning some videos about coco coir potting mixes which will demonstrate this. Thanks again - I will put “How to actually flush your growing media” into the video todo list. Peace and happy growing, Everest.
