sum things i think u over looked on the vs table i watch the dcg (dude grows show) and the amount of times there a question about how to fight this or that bug i find with hydro bugs kinda dont exist , maybe iv been luky for over 10years but never had bug problem and i haear lots of pepole say over or under water is the most common way people kill there plants in dwc i guess there still a bit of managing wetness off net pot, hydroton but as soon as root hits water over water under water problem goes away and kinda disagree with nuts cost , maybe if you running really hight ec and changing water every week im on autos and thay dont take more then 1ec 1.2 at max im shore coco people feed much higher and since iv been using Microbial Tea ,Ecothrive Biosys / recharge , now i only change water 3 or 4 times in plants life

A bit late but this room temperature don't look so high and organic nutrients need a certain room temperature to perform well...and it's not really relevant when you run a perpetual grow since you have anyway between 8 to 12 weeks to veg! Hydroponics is the fastest way and who will provide the highest dry weight...every growers know that so why commercial legal growers don't use this technique? Why they choose coco? But with a good veg time and we have way enough time you can get 1.7/1.8gpw on average with living soil...and a better taste imho and experience!

As a client of one of your lights, I certainly appreciate the spectrum and it's effectiveness. As a gardener who also grows chillis, if it was not already shared in the comments, I will say that from experience, peppers are photo-sensitive. If they do not get direct sunlight, they will not turn red. They will stay green. I've personally observed this when some peppers are hidden by leaves, and others are in the full sun. They go from green, to black, to red. So the reason the soil grown peppers showed red was only because the plant was sparse enough to allow light below the canopy and the fuller, denser plants did not permit the light to get to the peppers.

I was originally wondering if nitrogen was being taken up 'differently' or preferentially, but I like your answer better. With weed (which is, I guess, why most people are here) the buds are at the top and are fed later in a grow by the leaves that surround each bud so having less canopy penetration of light isn't a limiting factor on yield or flavour. Incidentally, I have personally found that LEDs (using various Mars Hydro models) offer greater canopy penetration than the old HPS bulbs, and I'm glad to be rid of them.

@@spidrespidre yes, light penetration is key. While unlike peppers, with cannabis, less light just means smaller buds and does not influence color. This is also why commercial growers "lollipop" their plants so only the top branches get buds... because the plant only has so much energy to spend so why not put that energy into the buds on top which will be bigger!! I too also have Mars Hydro and enjoy the low-heat factor.

I would have to agree with you . I have had the same experience with sweet banana peppers and red hot chillies. Very logical explanation . I would like to add this would not be as much a problem if u take advantage of certain grow techniques for example employ a scrog and spread it all out plus prune.

It's not like cannabis is special in that regard. All plants that produce fruits just like the bud sprouts. It's the same. It needs the complexity in the soil which no other substrate can reproduce in a sterile environment. Soil is the best when you want quality. If you want plants on steroids and chemicals, you are welcome to do that. Just you will be consuming those chemicals too. Just something you want to note yourself if you going to use the plants as medicine.

Hydro = 👎 fast growth rate, big plant, slow finisher, low yield for its turnaround time. A true living soil, completely organic no till grow will outgrow any hydro grow, anytime of the day - growth speed, health, fruit size and quality. An fully organic grow and the natural sun light will run circles around hydro all day, everyday.

Your coco wasn't watered/fed enough you have to treat it like hydro. I feed twice a day once at lights on again a couple hours before lights off. The growth should be much closer to the dwc than the soil.

I agree. You should get much more out of coco then hydro, if you know what your doing. Your only limited by the light, water amount and the amount you feed them. First problem with coco is that it have to be ready for growing. You have to prepare coco for growing. And you can use all the tricks you can use on plain soil, aka biological growth. I mean the amounts you can get out of 1 plant is unbelievable (3kg is the record atm). But as i said you have to know what your doing. like when to change the lightning (like what spectrum to us and when), when to flush out the coco, how much feed and what to feed them.

You definitely had pollination issues with the RDWC. Shaking pepper plants or having strong fans are the best way to pollinate peppers indoors. I'm assuming both the soil and coco were hand watered which means at a minimum you were bumping the watering can into the plants providing some pollination. In the RDWC its pretty clear that the plants weren't touched much as you would only ever be touching the control bucket and not really the blooms. At this point you would be more accurate to count the individual flowers to each plant and counting the peppers all as 1 bloom each. Its clear the RDWC was PACKED with unpollinated flowers and would've easily won the comparison for number of peppers had pollination been the same in each tent.

as far as i can understand the hydro grew in haste producing a dense plant while blocking the light to the fruit so i'd say production was limited due to limited light penetrating to the fruits. i figure plant training and pruning ( mainly of leaves) would increase yields

Great comparison Shane! I've gone organic, with my own living soil mix in both my veggie garden and medicinal plants. Compost, soil, aeration in approx 33% mix...can't beat it! All I do is water, about 4% by volume, and all are producing buds and fruit like crazy. No lab coat required.

I'm trying the mix 30% of each of these, for Mediterranean herbs: premium organic compost, coco coir and perlite. As a fertilizer I'll be using organic seaweed + plant based and micronutrients every 7-10 days. Used a coir ready mix bag for seed start, I managed successfully to germinate 98% of seeds of arugula, basil and parsley. The bag of seed start mix had also some seaweed added. When depleted the seedlings stopped growing. Once I added the fertilizer (half the suggested amount), they basically "exploded". Producing super big first set of leaves and now the second set is starting to appear. I've found coco coir being very airy, not molding and not having any pests/diseases in it. Now that I have more experience with soil amends and materials, I think it's a good solution for plants that loves water but they don't like too much water in the soil. Hopefully my choice will work!

I prefer Coco. Roots are able to travel easier than soil as it doesn't compact like soil allowing better water drainage as well. My cannabis plant is almost 3 feet tall and it's only been vegging less than 2 months outdoors.

It looks like the hydro peppers suffered from too much vegging. The plants were allowed to get too large for effective flowering under the light provided. Too much foliage = too little penetration of the canopy = less yield.

This is very true, based on many test and general practices done in indoor farming for a long while... Defoliating is a fairly common practice in the cannabis industry during flowering. It allows more light through the canopy and lets the plant focus more on flower/fruit production than vegitative sustain/growth. Its like weight reduction in racing, less weight = more zoom at the same hrsprs.

It also could have been too much veg, not in the way of resource utilization but because it was harder for the air to penetrate through and blow pollen around to the flowers... or when he shook the plants to get the pollen to drop, it wasnt as efficent as smaller plants... whichever method would probably work less on a larger plant like that and more on smaller ones. Thats something i dont think anyone else was thinking about honestly.

Your issue was definitely pollination, if you had a couple of bees in there working their magic the crop on your hydro system could have been fantastic given the amount of flowers they had. What a fantastic test! Even better the second (or 3rd) time watching this video. The difference in color on the fruit is very interesting. I've been using a 20/80 coco/soil mix and minimal dry amendments/microbials and getting good results. Funny how bigger is not always better? Think I caught a glimpse of maybe one red chilli on the Hydro side? Isnt it the sweet, red chilli flowers we are pursuing in the first place? Thank you always Shane!

Interesting that each medium caused the plant to put more energy in one aspect of growth than another. The soil is most conducive for fruit growth, and hydro is more conducive to vegetative growth. Neat!

I think the soil was most properly stressed so it efficiently reached blooming/fruiting stages fastest. I think the hydro is very comfortable and the plant lacks the stressful stimulus that causes a plant to rush into finishing its lifecycle. A very stressed plant might try to flower before it is ready and never thrive, we want plants that yield well and promptly. If this experiment went longer the hydro would have massive fruit yields, but the time it takes is a major factor. Peppers do not die off after fruiting, so it would be best not to harvest the plants, but better to harvest fruits and keep the plant growing for many years. Considering a plant might live for many years it may be best to do a hydro setup as well as find out ways to lightly stress a plant into flowering earlier.

I think that the soil maxxed out it's grow potential first and put it's energy into fruiting first which is why it was most developed. The hydro looked like it was gearing up for some serious production with all those flowers and would just continue to produce for a long season if left to grow.

I would like to see a test where all the plants were allowed to bloom for their complete season before being chopped, this would give us alot more data, resulting in a more accurate test. I'm thinking that with more time, the fruit grown in hydro would have tasted better, and the total amount of fruit would have been way more than either soil or hydro. Were the hydro plants getting macro nutrients? I gave up growing DWC in 2004. Too much work for an older fart.

That was about as accurate and fair as you can get. Each clone came from the same mother at the same time, each plant had the same size pot, each plant had the same light source,each plant had the same grow space and was fed as closely as could be. It sounds like you want to doctor the Coco and hydro results??

Pollination is the issue. Peppers have both male and female parts contained in the same flower. Just bumping the plants around is enough to produce more peppers. Khang Star, Peter Stanley and any other indoor pepper growers will all tell you to shake your plants to set fruit indoors. Its pretty clear hand watering alone is gonna set more fruit than never touching the RDWC plant. All the flowers are unpollinated peppers and if shaken, vibrated, or visited by pollinators will set fruit. Indoor Tomatoes work the exact same way.

@@Des420 No, the pepper plants are all the same maturity. The peppers themselves maturing has different factors. Fruit is only set after pollination. Peppers and tomatoes and many other plants are monoclinous which means there are male and female parts contained within the same flower. This makes pollination easy as simply knocking the flowers around a bit with result in pollination and then fruit set (The pepper grows inside each flower). Thus every flower can potentially be a pepper. Too high of N would mostly result in less flowers and more leaves similar to cannabis, but outside of reduced flowers would not prevent peppers from forming (although really high levels could cause flowers to drop off the plant). Just looking at the number of blooms on the RDWC plant tells me the plant was very happy, it just didnt have access to pollinators such as bees or the flower disturbances needed to knock the pollen around inside the flower.

I feel like soil will always produce more intense flavor profile over Hydro. Like hydro tomatoes and cucumbers are flavorless compared to soil for sure. May get more yield and a faster grow using hydro but, in my opinion, I like some tasty fruit.

I'd put my money on the soil producing more ripe fruit, because it ran out of root space, and probably started fruiting before the others. The coco and hydro mediums contain way fewer solids, which I think allows for more root volume and bigger plants.

Im pretty sure he barely touched those pepper flowers on the hydro side because there isnt a need. In other words, I believe it's human error.

yeah i agree, it seems like the heavy grow impeded the pollination. either you need to move the plant a bit, shake it, have more fans blowing at it, etc., or you trim it a bit. get rid of some of the leaves. not only does it allow for better pollination and ripening, but it also redirects some of the energy that is put into the canopy into the fruit instead.

I think the discrepancy in yield might be explained by the hydro setup preferring a bit more light than the soil or coco, in order to make full use of the high availability of nutrients.

It seems like the hydro side got too much nitrogen. When I’ve grown them I would switch over to the fruiting schedule earlier on for peppers. Plus in the kratky method of hydro there is literally no noise and cost is next to nothing. I’ve been growing a lot of kratky lately just cuz I like the stability. It grows a little less vigorous than aeration, but there’s no annoying air pump noise. In dwc or aeration sometimes I feel things grow too fast and it gives less of a time window to switch nutrient mixtures at the appropriate time depending on what type of plant is being grown. In one bucket of kratky style hydro I grew more chillies than you got in the soil and coco method. Wasn’t the exact same type of chillie as yours, but basically the same. For me, I love hydro because of the control and not having to water the plants at all. Also little to no fungal gnats. The only disadvantage is ph stability. But I almost never check the ph or tds unless I’m doing a controlled experiment. And as far as water changes, I often don’t change the solution for 3-4 weeks and in most cases only add water in the final phases of growth after the plants have grown larger. Hydro really to me can be just as easy as soil, but you are right, with peppers it seams soil does gives better taste.

He's testing mature peppers against immature ones. Of course the mature ones would taste better... No surprise there. The low RDWC yield is a surprise looking at the numbers, but clearly there's been an issue with the plant not maturing as quickly as the others, likely due to the excess nitrogen you mentioned... And that should not be the case. I think the coco plant got the most balanced feed and so it performed the best, which speaks more to what you feed than what you grow in.

@@Des420 It doesn't have to do with immature vs mature. The Brix level is higher in soil. The nutritional content is actually higher. In a cannabis test, indoor hydro tested for 4 dominate terpenes/ small array of cannabinoids. The same clone grown outdoors in living soil immediately tested for 12 dominate terpenes and a wider cannabinoid expression, theres a testable difference.

I understand the're so many variables to different ways of growing and you can't cover them all. But I see a few factors that could have biased the results: • Aero pots cause the roots to behave differently. All 3 should have been in the same closed pots. • From a passive perspective, Kratky would've been a closer comparison than a DWC that requires power and extra hardware that brings in extra costs. Kratky has virtually no medium. Observencies: When it comes to yield, amount of pods and flowers, it seems that the DWC was ready to go gangbusters on the pods but the experiment had the plug pulled before this happened. If the experiment would have gone on long enough for the DWC to fully ripen and be harvested, I wonder what the final outcome of the harvest of each plant would be. With Hot Peppers, nitrogen levels have a massive bearing on flower formation and subsequent pods. I wonder if the P/K nutrient increase happened earlier, then the DWC may have fruited earlier.. Comparing an unripe green pod from the DWC to that of a ripe pod from the soil? Sorry, that is totally ludicrous. No unripe fruit tastes anywhere near as good as that of ripe. Have you ever eaten a green banana? What I've learned from this is that fast and tasty pods should be grown in soil and if your in it for the long haul, DWC may give you a bigger harvest. Great comparison video! I personally gathered that the hydro plant seemed to produce much more flowers than the coco or soil plants. If given the opportunity of increased time, I would assume the hydro plant would have yielded more fruit.

Coco with a Blumat system or any hydrospike system outperforms DWC, the same way soil outperforms coco+DWC if using living soil and hydro spikes. This is why side by side comparisons aren’t the end all and be all. Everyone’s grow is different, and different plants prefer different mediums. The one thing we can all agree on, is Nitrogen can’t be uptaken while the medium is dry. So this coco and soil test kinda fell behind because of the outdated methods of watering.

Nice to see a great video, very informative and answers questions that keep coming up. With peppers, I find my hydroponic plants typically delay fruiting until the roots fully grow into the size container in which they are planted. Regarding fruit size, I would agree that the hydroponically grown peppers typically have smaller fruits. The plants tend to produce a lot of leaves as they are trying to transpire a lot of water. Not having much experience with coco, it was really interesting to see the larger fruit sizes. After seeing the roots in the soil and coco pots, it is interesting to wonder about perched water tables and capillary action. Well done video series!

i did notice the hydro had the most sprouted flowers/buds yet no chillis, i wonder how that would translate into cannabis? would that mean larger plants therefore larger buds or does the soil based chillis demonstrate more fruit means more yield for a cannabis plant? brilliant video btw love the detail and effort you put into educating us and demonstrating a fair test :)

@@torrielandsman4625 actually very little difference in size between coco and soil. Harvest looked slightly higher with coco but more ripened developed fruit with soil. Exactly what growers of any plant want. At that size of the hydro in that small a space self pollination should not have been an issue . Amazing how some people can’t accept that soil is still the easiest and cost effective media. Soil has worked for 1000’s of years. No reason to fix it.

@@bobbymccourt6794 Over three decades growing in hydro! I think I know a few things about growing in hydroponics. Twice as big, twice as fast, and three times more productive. I did not see any bees flying around or any other pollinators. Also the plant growing in hydros foliage was completely covering all of the flowers protecting shrouding them from wind or any other means of pollination! All Shane had to do is give them a shake and they would have pollinated and produced many times as many fruit than the soil plant. I do agree with your statement that soil has worked for actually hundreds of millions of years and works well for People that don't know what a plant needs for balanced nutrition, But if you understand what your plants need Hydro is at least twice as productive!

Some years before I bought my land, about six tons of mulch got dumped in my driveway. Now worms have turned it into an amazing grow medium... rich, black dirt --- like the good Lord intended (for us to grow our food and medicine IN). Thank God for free dirt, air, sun and rain... for with fervent prayer, it all comes together to equal a successful farm, regardless of size. (My "farm" is only ten acres, but I can live on its produce and share with every homeless person I meet.)

Soil works best for me. I am happy to sacrifice quantity for quality every time. Cost, effort is irrelevant. My Grandfather told me, " if you're going to do something, do it right." Once again you did it with a good test and I did get the light you had told me is better for a 5×5×8 Yeild lab tent and a New light SP40000 By Spider Farm's just have to find a store that will take the driver's off the Quantum Board of my SP40000 so I can have my driver's off of my tent to help keep the temperature down and mount it to my wall board and yes the Yeild lab tent is a great deal for the 5×5×8 over the test you did with the Yeild lab and the Gorilla tent and I want to Thank you very much for your time and knowledge for this video. Not sure if chilies are photoperiod or autoflower, looks like hydro is well vegged, but needed more time for fruit. Chilies tend to be harvested as they ripen whereas other crops tend to be flushed before harvest so would be very interested in a Canadian channel using some migro lights with alternative crops.

Hi Shane, on the hydro side you had a huge amount of flowers that weren't inoculated, if you were to of taken a q-tip and touched all the flowers onto other flowers it would have made them produce more.

I Think the hydro needed more light and light penetration since it was bigger with much more foliage, if the leaves were thinned so the light could reach the fruit, they probably would have ripened faster..just and opinion

Judging by the deep green color and size of the hydro plant, it was up-taking a lot more nitrogen(and possibly iron). Don’t' know if that was fertilizer differences or the vastly different root environment. As with most fruiting/flowering plants. If they have lots of nitrogen they grow and delay fruiting until they get some sort of stress(short days, less nitro, less water, temperature drop etc). Could be pollination but that's only conclusive if the flowers fall off without fruiting.. and you still have lots of flowers.. A couple of more week though and that hydro pepper would have outperformed them all(albeit milder peppers due lack of stress) BTW: Were the hydro peppers less hot?

One thing your missing from an accurate assessment of crop yield is proper harvesting techniques. The red peppers need picked as soon as they become mature, this will cause the plant to mature the smaller fruit and continue production. On a small pepper plant under continual harvest it is easy to get thirty to forty lbs of peppers over the course of the summer. It would be interesting for you to try this experiment again and see the yield difference between the soil and coco. Personally for myself I find the taste of hydroponically grown produce to be laughable bordering on disgusting. The immense network of life in the soil adds so many trace elements and subtle flavors that simply are not replicate-able with hydro.

My pepper in hydroponics was very huge and filled with lots of blossoms and few fruits. I increased the nutrients at this fruiting stage 2800ppm and added crushed eggs shells (Done by coffee grinder). After 10 days, the little pepper fruits exploded into hundreds. I started picking them full without ripening to encourage fruiting. After the 3rd picking, I had too many peppers and allowed the new peppers to get fully red on the plant. At this time it had become attractive. Algae had started to develop, but didn't affect the plant until the severe winter cold stepped in. Hopefully this year I get an early start to enjoy my outdoor hobby. Hopefully anyone looking for massive fruiting should try increasing the ppm for fruiting. Peppers and tomatoes seem to need a bit more calcium.

Hey Shane. Another thought. I have my own blend I do with a bag of 70/30 Coco/Perlite, an additional bag of Perlite and about another 20% of organic soil that has worm castings, ground peat moss, and mycorrhizae. I also additionally add mykos as I start, transplant, etc. While many don’t like a soil addition to Coco/Perlite, I do because I am placing used combination as well as shredded plants over a growing patch in my yard. Eventually I will just recycle the Coco, but for now I get the best of both worlds. I do think that it’s fair to point out that Coco without Mycorrhizae to have the Coco soil working at its best. Besides knowing that Coco will need a bit of extra CalMag too. It’s a good medium. The hydroponics are just not an option for me. I grow for me. I also use the tent for other micro greens , herbs and mushroom propagating for Spring grows. It’s amazing that you do all the video without a glass of water. Chilis and all.

Really nice only grew chilis in soil they became silly strong under some cfl :s storebought chilis nonames just took the seeds and grew them under a diy cfl panel bulbs and uuuum tubes ? boomchakala good ones and i found that they turned red when its warm around the plants ... who figured ? the green ones were Spicy atleast . I have banana peppers growing wild outside in 3 gallon pots with foxfarm coco loco soil. They're full of peppers, I pull about 15 peppers per week on each plant, and they get full of peppers within a week. Great soil mix from the hydro store and fabric pots is the answer to big healthy plants. And use bloom fertilizer for many continuous flowers resulting in many fruits/peppers. I use floranova grow/ floranova bloom/ carboload. I also have black hot peppers that grow straight up. the banana peppers hang down like banana 🍌. Great mix, chop it up, add to my homemade hamburgers.

@@C3Voyage Exactly! I think part of Shanes problem was that the Heavy foliage protected the flowers from being disturbed and could explain why they didn't drop their pollen. Plus Shane didn't share what they were being fed!

I like the coco peat best. You get huge fruit. I think in the long run I'd want bigger fruit as to a bushy plant as I am not eating the leaves.
