Terry Chandler, a master hunter and president of the National German Shorthaired Pointer Club, talks about the breed he loves. Dogumentary TV caught up with Terry at a Field Test in California City, California.
The German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) is a medium to large sized breed of dog developed in the 19th century in Germany for hunting. A versatile hunting breed, being an all-purpose gun breed of dog suitable for both land and water, it is streamlined yet powerful with strong legs that make it able to move rapidly and turn quickly. It has moderately long floppy ears set high on the head. Its muzzle is long, broad, and strong, allowing it to retrieve even heavy game. The dog's profile should be straight or strongly Roman nosed; any dished appearance to the profile is incorrect. The eyes are generally brown, with darker eyes being desirable; yellow or "bird of prey" eyes are a fault. The tail is commonly docked, although this is now prohibited in some countries[3]. The correct location for docking for a GSP is after the caudal vertebrae start to curl, leaving enough tail to let the dog communicate through tail wagging and movement.[citation needed] The docked tail should not be too long or too short but should balance the appearance of the head and body. The GSP tail is carried at a jaunty angle, not curled under. When the GSP is in classic point stance, the tail should be held straight out from the body, forming a line with the pointing head and body. Like all German pointers, GSPs have webbed feet. They are known for going after water fowl in the water. The German Shorthaired Pointer is a member of the Sporting Group.

I’m 52 and have hunted all my life, and never hunted with a shorthair until yesterday! My friend from Florida came up here to Central New York to do some pheasant hunting with me. He brought his shorthair. I never had so much fun hunting pheasants!! That dog was absolutely amazing! An absolute JOY to hunt with!!

I honestly can't imagine how my 20's would have looked like without my GSP. I got Maggie at age 22 (now 29) and she got me through college, breakups, depression and getting fit again. The smartest, funniest, most loving and loyal dog I ever met, and I had dogs all my life.

There was already a GSP in my family when I was born 65 years ago. This dog helped raise me. I have had this breed in my family ever since. I've always believed that the German Shorthair is not for everyone. If you cannot spend a certain amount of time with, are short of patience, live in an apartment, or are just not an outdoors person, get something else. That said, breeders need to interview prospective owners to make sure the puppy is going into a proper home.

Yes, they are not for everyone because many times they outshine their owners. A GSP owner MUST understand the value and demands and the honor of owning a GSP. No other breed in my mind can measure up with this one.

Having bird dogs you distill your life to a succession of short lives, each of them a dogs...from each you learn a little of the joy of living, observing his inexcusable enthusiasm (between naps), his eagerness that makes each day the more significant for being a day in a life so short. You watch the pup grow out of him as he becomes more serious, but there is always a good-natured disposition and his faith in you... There are people who have children in Hope of providing themselves with someone to be there in the end, for your dog, it is only you who are there When that time comes. A right thing, for it puts you in a position of doing something for him after he has done so much for you. ---George "bird" Evans

My 13wk old GSP dug up a mole yesterday after sniffing him out. He didn't kill it, his companion dog, a 17 month old doberman took the mole. However, this little guy is stalking everything it sees, birds, squirrels, even a box turtle! His energy matches our big dobie girl and it's hilarious to watch. He is so so confident for a little guy. He runs up to our neighbor's GSD - never hesitates. And, he's the most affectionate, sweet puppy! I hope he never gets too serious, I love his jovial disposition. And, he loves to talk/vocalize like nothing I've ever seen! Such a tough, charming little velcro dog.

I ended up with one of these by accident from puppy picked from a shelter. Never been a “hunter” and didn’t do any training. I am very active and enjoy the outdoors. “MELVIN” is the most fun dog I’ve ever had for outdoor activities. He takes me hunting and as even brought out the hunting instincts in my corgi mix, and Australian shepherd. They are sooo comical on our long walks. Melvin is a bit crazy in the house but it’s never a dull moment and he is my best cuddler of any dogs I’ve ever owned( all large working dogs). He is the dog I trust the most at the dog park. He is the one who is my best guard dog while we are sleeping. He is the most people friendly and trustworthy. He is everything you could ask of a dog. This dog could definitely stalk and get something if I let him loose in a field. He is a true athlete! Outdoors and in!😂

I had three of them, Lara, Sara and Zara. I am glad you said it because In my opinion is the more intelligent, loyal, quite, gentle, friendly dog I ever had, and hunting wise is the best, never get too far, always at shooting distance, they have no fears of anything, very obedient, excellent nose, soft mouth, they look at you as if to say what you want me to do next. I absolutely love this breed. Thank you for sharing.

Ha there are still dozens of amazing rather local German breeds that haven't made their way to the US yet. For a hunting dog, look up Muensterlaender (Münsterländer as in Münster, Westfalia) for example. They are just as good as GSP but less crazy and softer. They even come in two sizes. Or if you're looking for a protection dog that doesn't shed and won't trigger your allergy, look up Giant Schnauzer.

It was the first and so far only dog I owned. He was a large male, originated from a good line here in Germany and was just a joy to be around. Unfortunately he suffered from arthrosis at the later stages of his life and cancer ended it at just 10 1/2 years. I would not recommend it as a beginner breed. These dogs are very intelligent and come up with solutions on their own. A lack of training and obedience will make for results different from your wishes. They are very very gentle, but also not to be underestimated. Mine was perfectly calm, so long as he was not in a fenced garden, then he would pretty much turn into a Hovaward. It didn't matter whose garden it was, he could be there for the first time and would immediately establish a parameter defense. Oh and you need to be active. Even in the later stages we would walk just shy off 10km a day.

It's late at night, all my lights are off, and the volume is low as I watch with my sleeping golden next to me. I just got the golden and she is my first. Really good dog, and although she needs a lot of total overall exercise, her breed variation is built more for power. I had GSP's growing up. If you have the time and energy and hunt get one. Naturally pointers, no upland training need if you train overall impulse control well. Watching these dogs in the field is like watching a living artform.

THANK YOU!!!! GSPs are great dogs and it was wonderful to see an interview that concentrated more on the working ability and health of the dogs, than getting overly involved in conformation specifications and show life. I get tired of hearing about "The standard" because in the end, it's all theory until you see dogs in action. There are working dogs with physical details that show folks will say are not correct, yet they go go go, have endurance and brains and prove their use for many years, which you cannot do in a ring. Terry spoke about life with the dogs and what makes them wonderful, and emphasized how they were meant for outdoor activities. Good to know about the eye issues and the low incidence of HD. Hope to see more like these. German WIREHAIRED pointers next perhaps? :) P.S. I hope to donate to your channel soon. My job situation is iffy right now or I'd have sent you a few bucks already!

I've been trying to make this point for a long long time, as long as the dog resembles the breed it's supposed to be, not too extreme either way but not pretentiously measured this nose, or that leg shape, then as far as looks go i couldn't care less. I have a female pointer, chica, sharp as a razor blade. She's not as tall as a 'show' female, and a slight bit stockier, but has drive to work for days. She's a full pointer, but from a working line who seem to be bred for hard field use. I also have a mongrel pit/lab, i use him for rabbiting and hare chasing as his body is shaped just right for speed/agility and he has a real taste for bunnies. My 3rd dog is a cane corso, he's the one i've had the most trouble with trying to explain to people what he is. He's a traditionally bred farmers dog, not a prancy show dog, and i've had so-called 'breeders' tell me he's this, he's that, he's not a corso. He's from the southern italy region i live in, and he's more corso than the VAST majority of corso today, from an old farming line, bred for purpose not for looks, but because his face isn't this, or he's taller than 'standard, they won't accept he is a true corso, but his attitude is absolutely spot on for what the breed was meant for. We bred dogs for jobs, not for looks, they just came with the package.

Best dogs around in my opinion, I’ve had 3. I wish they didn’t all suffer from hip displasia around the end. Troopers even in the worst of times.

Never have had a GSP but had decided to go that way. Any lingering doubts I had about the breed were absolutely put to rest thanks to this excellent video.

My GSP is the best dog I have ever had. Lived with weimaraners, dalmatians and bouvier. My GSP is so loving never barks at others, sleeps with my cats. Awesome family dogs.

Have a 7 month old GSP. Super easy to train! I knew this breed was brilliant before we got it, but I had no idea just how smart they are. It's very easy to set bad precedent with them. Ours is more run 2-3 times a day and she loves it. The natural instinct to find, stalk and point and get is amazing. I've spent very little time working with her on it, she just gets it. "Arabelle, bird" point in the direction, she'll start scanning...find them, stalk to within 10-15', look at me for the go (didn't train it, she just did it), she'll go and keep going. The only tough part was getting her to return, which she does now, but if there is a distraction, she'll tend to want to check it out. Need to work on the distraction thing.

i have a GSP and we don’t take her hunting but we have a decently large backyard and she’ll just run around out there for about 30 minutes. sometimes we take her to this huge field and she just runs around and we’ll play fetch and she’ll chase birds, but she never runs away. she’s a good dog.

Great vid! I just happened to stumble across it, as gsp owner or maybe the other way around, it was very informative, by the way, my gsp is 14 yrs old and still hunts like he is a pup!! That’s his pic as my profile pic. Reuger.

Your commentary at 5:45 reminded me of an incident in 1975 with our GSP, Latka. I was out of town on business and called my wife. Very early that morning (3 AM) there had been some commotion on the front porch and the dog reacted with a lot of barking and growling. I asked my wife whether she had called the Hollywood (California) police and she said, "No. I didn't want to lose an hour of sleep, and I figured nobody is going to get past Latka." Essentially, she decided to go back to sleep and let the dog handle it.
