German Shorthaired Pointer - How Much Exercise Does a GSP Really Need?

Today we are taking a couple of young German Shorthaired Pointers on a farm adventure training session. We thought this would be a good chance to provide a little insight into the the GSP's naturally high levels of energy, endurance, and natural inquisitiveness.
If you are thinking about purchasing a German Shorthair Pointer, make sure you understand that you are purchasing a dog that is bred to hunt and run all day long, with very little rest. These dogs are very rewarding companions, but one must be realistic about the effort level required to help them be successful in a suburban environment.

The breed is considered medium in size with the males slightly larger than the females. One should be able to determine the sex of the dog based on general appearance, i.e. males should look masculine and females should look feminine. A fairly healthy breed but the first time buyer should always inquire about health clearances of the sire and dam when looking for a puppy. Breeders should have no problem discussing or answering any health issues being asked. The following are considered as a minimum to ask about: OFA or PennHip - hip dysplasia; Cardiac-echocardiogram for congenital cardiac; CERF - current eye clearance of PRA done each year until age 6 every two years afterward; CD - DNA test for carrier status for cone degeneration (may be cleared by both Parents DNA test indicating "normal" a non-carrier.) It is important to remember this is primarily a hunting dog, bred for a purpose, and as such will have a high level of activity and/or energy that needs to be channeled. Just like people not all are created equal and while some will learn a task quickly others may take more time and patience. GSPs tend to be eager to please and willing to learn at relatively young ages if the training sessions are not forced and kept short and simple. Even though some may appear physically mature by the time they are six months old their brain may not be engaged until they reach two years of age. Thus you may have an adult size dog with a "teenage" brain.
The coat of a GSP is short but not thin and when one runs their hand across a dog the hair should not feel soft to the touch with exception of the hair found on the head and ears. The GSP head is shaped differently than that found on a Lab or Pointer and its ear is slightly larger and longer, not pointed at the end but slightly rounded. To prevent field injuries the tail is docked, not short like a Boxer or Doberman but should be at least 6 to 8 inches long with some a bit longer and with dewclaws removed. Often confused by some as a Dalmatian because some of the coat patterns of the GSP are bright white with small markings referred to as "ticking" or with Labs because of the solid liver or black versions. Yet if compared side by side it would be readily apparent that none of them look alike.
If interested in a GSP is it important to find a breeder you feel comfortable asking questions or to talk with about health issues, training or any thing that might come to mind.

That’s my girl IZZY, she’s been home from training for 7 months. Sending her to Stonnie for in kennel training was the best decision ever, it’s worth every penny! She’s still spot on with her social behavior, recall in every situation that we’ve experienced to date and she’s an overall pleasure to have as a family pet. We don’t hunt but enjoy several different outdoor activities and Absolutely love all of the puppy sized adventures that we do! The breed does require a lot of exercise but it hasn’t been a problem for us. It was hard to find a breeder that didn’t dock the tails but once I found one after speaking to our vet I knew that’s what I wanted...one with a tail. It hasn’t been an issue and we’ve been in several different environments. Our Miss Izzy is a true joy thanks to her trainer so I must give a huge shout out to Stonnie once again!

Hiking with GSPs is a true joy. I appreciate that you are encouraging people to honestly consider whether they can incorporate the amount of time and energy to fully exercise these dogs. For us, it is a daily commitment of at least 90 minutes and that does not include the time to get them someplace they can safely run off leash for that long. Often we are hiking for 2 hours or more. It is the best part of my day, but it is also a serious chunk of daylight. And it is every day.

I live in the city but my GSP is the best! He is my coach, he walks with me for miles and plays ball, I got him from a woman that could not keep him. Even though he's large, he is so happy to learn and explore. Within two weeks he learned how to give paw, sit, lay, roll over and retrieve the ball that I throw. Since he cannot run around by himself in the city, due to cars driving, he gets exercise and toys to play with and he seems to be happy. I'm so glad to hear that they live long and don't get sick as other breeds do. I want him to be with me for a very long time. Thanks for this video, it was relaxing to watch these pups be so free.

People that have never had one, cannot imagine the amount of energy that a GSP has. Mine crossed the rainbow bridge last November, he was my best pal for 13 years. Even on his last day, with a huge tumor on his chest, he still had the puppy like wonder of a new adventure. They never outgrow the puppy like wonder. Mine was less energetic after about 10, I was able to take him with me for work to an apartment and he was content as long as he was with me. He got plenty of off leash time as well, but I still walked him at least 10 miles every single day. Before he went on an extended work journey with me, he was on the farm and was allowed to run free. He was a great dog and my best pal.

Our GSP requires play every 2 hours, and he is our Asperger dog. If we don’t stick to the same schedule, ball every 2 hours, he will let you know. But it all paid off! Daughter won 4th at Dockdogs World Championship over a year ago! He is the smartest, most athletic dog I’ve ever had

I was about 9 when I decided one afternoon to take our GSP on a walk around the block. I clipped on the leash & headed out. Things went fine until we approached a fairly large empty lot on our block that was covered with clover. Rabbits made trails through the relatively tall clover. My GSP decided to hunt them out - over my objections. She quickly overpowered me and dragged me like a rag doll through the field until I finally gave up and let go of the leash. Some kindly neighbors helped me recover the dog and I walked the the half a block back home. We didn't go on any walks after that.

My boy Trapper is just like Rush. He covers so much ground so fast. Luckily we live on a ranch and he gets lots of exercise. As you said though, after 15 minute break, he's ready to go again. He's a ranch dog that sometimes goes hunting. 😃

In the summers, mine will swim for five hours in a row if you let him, nap in the car in the way home, then be ready to go after the nap. GSPs are the best!

I live in rural New England and have acres of woods around my house and a 300 acre work campus where I can bring my dogs daily. A Golden Retriever and a Poodle mix rescue mutt. I hike 5-8 miles a day and the dogs probably triple that all off leash. That off leash free roaming in the woods is the only way to go - that's what they want to do. An exercised dog is a good dog. I don't do a lot of training, sit and down but hardly ever use them - they're just tricks. I also train a real stay (forever) and what I call a hard recall (get your ass over here right now) because those are useful and safe. Other than that that we just have a symbiotic relationship.

Absolutely adored my late GSP of 16 years. The best dog companion I've ever had, and the most loving friend. But yes....the most hyperactive and energetic dog I've ever seen to this day. The vast majority of people simply shouldn't have a GSP, because there's no way they'll stay active enough. Have to go hiking all day if you want them to settle down at night and cuddle up on the couch with you.

There's a type of hunting we do in the UK and Ireland you'd love called bushing, Stonnie. Usually a terrier, spaniel or a hybrid of those types will work cover with a lurcher or some other fast dog staying just out of the thicker cover and watching the action waiting for something to break cover and run out into the open. The numbers tend to be quite low, but it's great to watch, non-stop action in the right place.

I have a 14 year old weim and he required 90 min of walks daily in his prime. When off leash he would dart forward 20 yards and double back the entire time! One time I was like I’m gonna run 5 miles and wear this dog out but he was still ready to play and wasn’t tired at all after running that distance! He is a wonderful temperament dog and everyone loves him but I decided I didn’t want to go through those intense younger years again and we got a different puppy. Literally he never sat down or laid down when he was younger. He was up all the time and the only times he did lay down was to charge his batteries for a bit. Stonnie is not kidding to make sure you are really sure you want a dog like this! I think the puppy we just got is still easier than my 14 year old weim!

About how far in yards do you decide to start raining the dogs back? That is something that I’ve been trying to figure out with my two wire fox terrier‘s. I have had a few Shorthairs over the years and they are the best. But even after a couple of hours hiking through the countryside they will take a nap for up to an hour and want to go again. So you really need somewhere close by where they can be let off the leash and follow their nose and preferable there will be some body of water where they can wet their paws, if not swim.

i raised and competed in hunts with coonhounds all through middle and high school in a secluded rural area, then went to college in a metro city and loved it all except for missing my hounds. but now i am thinking about going to the outer suburbs of the city and getting a gsp as a compromise between a coonhound and a more companionable dog like a golden or lab. i love a hound’s independence and drive, but i need a dog that will mind a little better in a populated area. i will say my coondogs minded better with basic obedience than anyone else’s at the hunts and field trials i went to lol

I have a 2yo gsp and his best friend is a 4yo blue tick coonhound. While they're both wonderful dogs, their dispositions are very different. It seems like the coonhound is more stubborn and responsible, whereas my gsp (who's still pretty young for the breed) is just happy to be along for the ride but can be very bratty. I live in a city without a big yard, which means I set aside about two hours for the park every day, but it's the absolute best part of my day every single day.

Hi stonnie!my gsps are far more wild...perhaps the limitations we have at the ranch, e cant afford going with all pf them on the leash, so they've got used to go free. The problem I have are the two males. One of them is so good at hunting he has already hunted and eaten so theres no way to convince him to come back when he's catched a scent and is already chasing it...I am very concerned because now with a new young male to follow him they reinforce each other and practically disappear...but recall is difficult as I say, once they know what it is to hunt and eat...they live in a big ranch but still they have reached the road once and already someone tried to take one away from is...please give me a tip if you think there is something I can do to reinforce the coming back....thanks stonnie God bless you and your family

In urban areas it's not uncommon to have people throw poisoned stuff on the ground because they hate dogs or cats. The guy I got my dog from had a neighbor that threw a fried sponge over his fence. You need to teach them what is alright and not alright to eat. And dogs don't learn from stomach ache, because it happens too long after they ate the wrong thing. Grass is actually fine, it's actually a source of vitamin that they don't get too often. There aren't really any plants they like that are bad for them.

Thanks @@StonnieDennis, I've heard of the guideline of five minutes of exercise per month of age. I think it's too restrictive, but we usually go on 1 1/2 hour walks (about 3 miles) in the woods with our other dogs, about 4 times a week. For a 4-month-old gsp puppy, 20 minutes seems little to me, but I don't know if 90 minutes running freely (I estimate that they do at least 3 times the distance and most of the time running), would be too much and may cause some problems in the joints in the future.
