Pete, I am a long time viewer, bindged all your videos and am all caught up. I was helping a neighbor replace some teeth on her haybine and we made a simple job way more complicated then it needed to be. As a former engineer, I love explanations of how things work. Your videos, give me a great understanding of how engineers formulated designs for farm equipment. The designs that work best, use the expertise of the farmer to be able to fix everyday problems. For your farm, these simple designs, continue to perform well. And as your presentations say, maintenance is the key to keep them running well.

Your haybine is how I found your channel. I was researching different haybines this winter/spring and looked up videos of ih 990s and your older videos of cutting hay appeared first. Even though I ended up not buying a 990 myself, I have been following along here ever since. I love your videos. Glad your old 990 does a good job for you. I had the same setup when I started out. 990 on a 656. It (the 990) was neglected for years before I got ahold of it. It sure left a lot to be desired. Went to a new holland and never looked back. In it’s defense I will say they’re built pretty solid. Funny you mentioned the shoes. That was the last straw for me. I lost one in one of my fields and didn’t find it till after Christmas. On the bright side I didn’t find it with my baler!

I will never grow hay or ever have a need for a haybine, but I really enjoy the technical explanation of its workings. You said there are some zerks need greasing throughout the work day. Could you use remote grease cups with the internal spring to keep grease on the more critical parts ?? Thanks,

My father had the same haybine, they are good units ! We had about a 50 beef cow herd in the early 70's through the late 90's and farmed 120 acres of hay . Herfords and Angus cow/calf operation

Very nice explaination about the IH 990 hay conditioner. We had one years ago. It was a little rough but, did the job. Best part, it had a simple drive system on it. Later we upgraded to a IH 1199 hay conditioner. The drive system was a little more complicated but, I liked how the sickle bar & reel was setup. Now I have a John Deere 260 disc mower. I can run faster across the field but, it's just a mower. Thus, I have wait longer for the hay to cure before baling. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.

I've been cutting and baling using a NH 315 baler and a NH 488 haybine. I'm running a Kioti 2510 sub-compact tractor. That's about a 24 hp PTO. I've been doing it two years now and no issues. For those that understand... I can't believe it works. I feel like I'm baling hay with a lawnmower.. lol.

I bought 100 acre old farm. It came with the same model haybine. This is very useful video. I just used it for the first time tonight….and broke a tooth on some metal lol, guess i will be pounding out broken rivets tomorrow

I owned a 990 M/C for 25 years. I was very pleased of the service. One feature you failed to mention with material discharged from the rollers. My 990 had a grass teeter feature underneath the deflector top (that you mentioned where some people never clean and collects) would allow the cut hay to scatter, improving the drying time. I used it primarily cutting alfalfa.

When I started out, my great uncle had a Ford cycle bar mower, a separate roller crimper "conditioner", an International rake and a case square baler. He would borrow a tedder to fluff up the hay to help it dry faster. We got $0.04 per bale to work from noon on baling, stacking on the wagon, feeding the elevator and then stacking in the loft on their side, all the old hay mow would take. At the end of the day everyone got an ice cold beer.

A friend of mine knew a guy who had a hand in designing those wobble boxes. One time when he came by he told my friend “ I see you’ve got one of my babies” in reference to his Fast Hitch #100 Balanced Head sickle bar mower, which utilizes a version of the wobble box.

Those 990's are almost bullet prof. I used one when I was a teen. I cut around 300 acres a year with it. And you are right about hp it takes to run one. we used a Oliver super 77 diesel to puul it most of the time.

iremember at 4yo my dad had me stand on the seat of our big dodge hay truck,it had a big rotary conveyer on the back.dad put the truck in 1st gear and jumped off the running board while i followed the racked wind rows of hay,when i got to the end of the row i would pull the steering wheel to turn the truck into the next row,that winter dad bought the bailer

Good overview of haybines,, had a 469 n.h and have gone to a krone disc mower. I don't have rocks but have numerous fire ant mounds. My 469 broke it's wobble box and parts cost almost half of the used krone I got. Some of your 990 features I like and were not on my nh. Mine was a large collector of hay chaff and disc mower very little,so I save some time . I thought when I got the krone I would miss that hay crimp. But my time to hay it is generally 90 plus temps and seems the large stem Johnson grass dries just fine and the Bermuda grass too. I am kinda late to this video , thanks. Thanks

nice video ! I'm still using a case 555 which is identical to hesston pt10 my dad bought new in 68 , yes very similar to the 990 , parts for mine are getting very hard to find ! I also have a nice old model 100, balanced head quick hitch mower that i use for field maintenance , there all great therapy for me ! lol !

Very interesting video of your haybines. We don't see many in this area. Most hay producers just cut grass with (usually) their "circle cutters" and leave it lay where it falls. Drying times are shortened by Florida's (in)famous sunshine, but a crimper would help on those "iffy" haying days. I've found that if the cut grass gets a bit of rain or dew it doesn't seem to hurt quality if the grass is still green, especially if it gets tedded the next day. Keep up the good videos. Personally, I don't want nothing that has a mouth! Well, maybe a cat....

I remember having to adjust them H and M Farmall fan belts by loosening The keeper and screwing 1/2 of the pulley on to the other threaded half inward ..and man them things were always stuck like chuck 😅

Good explanation of how a haybine works, however I wouldn't mow wet grass for hay anyway. Let the dew dry off while the grass is still standing, and then cut. Makes the hay dry better. Less spoilage.
