I know I’m being nostalgic, but I love that sound that a cycle bar mower makes when mowing hay. It seems to grow back faster as well

I use a 2009 1459 Massey Ferguson Haybine, which is basically a Hesston machine, behind a Kubota Grand L4760 to cut about 200 acres of hay each year. It does run with a lot less HP, and uses about half the diesel that my JD 6110 (72 PTO HP) does with this machine or a larger disc cutter with just a little bit more time. Diesel is a big Farm Expense to consider these days. Great explanation Neil!

I grew up running a 488. Great swather, but I can’t imagine going back. I’m sure there’s people out there that it still works great for. Currently running a Case (New Holland) self propelled rotary.

Bar mowers are a hot commodity (again) this year in the midwest. I'm actually hoping to buy a haybine head this year. I think for the quality of cut, disc mowers don't do very well where it's thin/short crop and sickle type machines can struggle if high volume is present. Not to forget price, there is a pretty big discrepancy

I do about a 100acres a year with a 1091 Heston and a 50 horse tractor. Works pretty good and I can cover about 5 acres per hour. A lot lower cost than a disk mower for what I do. If I was trying to cover more ground I would definitely want a disk mower.

The best option is run and care for the equipment you already own. A good cost benefit analysis needs to be done for every purchase. Things look shiny and fancy but the biggest reason for farm failure is too much debt. Thanks Messick’s for very quick turnaround on a new belt for the NH 492!! Just Say’n 🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸 Thanks for not making it sound like the older style equipment is “obsolete”.

While not the fastest machines on earth, I think a cut from a haybine grows back quicker as the material is cut not "Sheared" off.............Another thing old heads around me always believed, the material being cut with a sickle is fed into the conditioning rolls perpendicular to them, unlike a discbine which can be any which way at high speed which leads to quicker drying of the material. Don't know if that is true or not, but makes sense when your shooting for dry hay...........haylage, discbine all the way.

I just switched to a drum mower this year, and my experience is that the rotary mower uses nearly twice the fuel the sicklebar did, and was only slightly faster. It's super noisy too. I wouldn't go back though. It cuts in both directions, it doesn't get clogged, it is debris and damage resistant, and it cuts closer to the ground. That last one got me 10-20% more crop off the field and helps pay for the upgrade.

I'm running a 12' mower conditioner with a 24.7 horse subcompact tractor (KIOTI CS2410) with zero issues... going on two years now. I've found that most implements are FAR over estimated on the required HP. I've used an old 7-foot sickelbar mower, NH 488 haybine, NH 315 square baler and it doesn't even slow down on my hilly property. I will say that using a subcompact can be dangerous if ground is to steep due to it being light and able to tip sideways. Flat ground no issues at all.

Here’s something for you think about. I bought a John Deere 830 moco it’s 10ft center pivot machine it needs at least 70pto tractor and weighs just over 5000lbs! I put on my grandpas 2020 Kubota m4071d. And little did you know it pulls it up hills at 5mph and on flat ground at over 7mph and this is thick thick brome down here in eastern ks. So Kubota has a good good transmission good power. I’d bet money the nh 75 power star couldn’t pull like it can and especially a jd 75e . But a jd75m probably would pull it faster more hp. Good machine there’s videos on the channel showing it in action. We used haybines and sickles for years. Don’t compare to those new discbines. Good video as always.

Help, 1190 IH - I need to replace the left side (driver's) lift arm linkage at the front (two plates sandwiched with two shafts, bushings and Rclips to hold it all together) - and I can't get it to line up to the oval access hole. Bottom shaft is ok, it's the top one that is the problem - how to get the arm over to the access opening... The fulcrum cap screw/shaft will not come out - I've tried - something holds in it OTHER than the large Rclip in behind. The rear chain comes off easy. The linkage unit should insert from the inside and point OUT to make it easy for the facer plate and R clips to be put on by a human hand!!! Your site is where I get all my schematics - I have a farm full of 1960's-70's IH implements. Any ideas on how to do it without torching the hole larger?

Well I have not tried it yet, but something tells me my B2410 would have no problem running a JD 1209 that is properly tuned. It runs a NH 273 baler. Not something I plan to do on a regular basis, have a Kubota L4060 HSTC on order for that, but knowing the B2410 can power the implements just confirms the L4060 will have no problems handling it. Fun fact, the NH 273 had a motorized version with a 17HP gas engine on it. 17 HP. I can rotate the 1209 by hand easier than the 273, and it turns easily with the flywheel. Of course HP wont really factor in until it is actually cutting grass and under a load, so properly tuned, meaning all knives are sharp and aligned and the rollers properly spaced, the B2410 should power it OK.

For grass hay I prefer a double-action sickle bar over a disc mower. Just as fast if not faster and way better re-growth. Disc mowers butcher the crop and don't cut as clean as a sickle bar. I notice after the hay is picked up my fields look like a well manicured front lawn. With my old disc mower the fields just looked absolutely butchered and not as pretty.
