Jack Russell Terriers are a type, or strain, of working terrier; they are not pure bred in the sense that they have a broad genetic make-up, a broad standard, and do not breed true to type. This is a result of having been bred strictly for hunting since their beginning in the early 1800's, and their preservation as a working breed since. The broad standard, varied genetic background based on years of restricted inbreeding and wide outcrossing, and great variety of size and type, are the major characteristics that make this strain of terrier known as a Jack Russell such a unique, versatile working terrier.

@@moneygamer4308 Well, I just put my jack down a few months ago. She was 16 years old and the best friend I ever had. RIP Lilly. In my experience, they are healthy dogs that don't require a lot of vet trips. Common health issues with jacks can be allergies and oral health issues- that being said, make sure their teeth are clean if you can. A grain-free diet can cost around $30 a month for a small dog, so again, not very expensive. I hope this helps a bit!

Very true I would never consider a different breed. My truck has 6500 hours on it 3500 of that is idle time to air condition while he waits for me. Dont do this with a puppy but once they are very experienced in a car and several years old they would rather be in your truck than home or in the office.

I just laid my Thor, who was 17 going on 18, to rest. He was a Jack Russell Whippet cross whom I adopted, bonded deeply with immediately and never looked back with regret once. We were best friends for over 13 years who I do not have to miss - we spent almost every waking and sleeping moment together, and made so many happy memories together. I truly cherish my life Journey shared with Thor, he was just like me that is so true about us and why we were such a good match - both difficult 😂. I love you Thor, my friend and companion. I also have a JRT mix, he is amazing, also o good watchdog, he needs to be able to smell the visitor before he can come in, not that he's aggressive but he needs to be shure about who comes in he can be a bit suspicious and can't stop barking iff the person at the door doesn't want him to come near. Overall a silent, friendly and smart dog, I can take him everywhere without a problem, he adores other dog(Iff they are well behaved), children, he's even friendly to my cat and the cats off my neighbors. He is also the "cat police“ of my street, he cannot stand the fact that cat's fight, so he makes it stop by just barking and standing in between. My whole street loves him for that. It's like an old soul in a dogsuit

My first 2 JR ladies lived to 17 and 18. (Mollie and Forri) After deciding to never get another dog again after losing my old girls, I went and bought another one! Bonnie, aged 1. They leave such a gap in your house once they are gone you have to get another one. You describe the breed better than anyone I have ever known and the way you equate the JR breed with the owners is sooooo true. I could easily get a Labrador or spaniel but a passive dog like that would not suit my family. We love the non stop random full on never ending fun that is a JR.

We have a Jack Russell named Maddy. She is very much like like how Lynn describes. She is fearless and loving. When Maddy met our new grandson, her maternal and protective instincts kicked in. She loved on that baby and laid next to him. When I went to pick him up, she whined a little. She then nipped at me as I did pick him up. When our granddaughter found a newborn kitten which was abandoned, Maddy's maternal instincts kicked in again and she took care of that kitten and dry nursed her as we had to bottle feed her. Maddy doesn't like cats but she is still protective of her cat and they play constantly together. By all means, have a fenced in yard. If one of the kids leave the gate open, Maddy takes off and it sometimes takes an hour to find her. Overall, my opinion is they are a very smart dog. They know when they have done something wrong but I believe she thinks it is better to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission... Great watchdog and so good with the grandkids and all kids, come to think of it. She does have an Alpha personality when it comes to being with other dogs..

Always did what was expected and it was the most difficult thing to be separated from him. Ya! I lost my jack A couple years ago. (Bret Maverick)! He was the smartest dog I had ever known. He saved my son's life twice from seizure's. had killed better then A 100 rates, loved to chace Squwirls. He was with me 24 hours A day until he cleaned up some vomit after my son got sick he was dying from cancer and was taking a lot medication! I took him strait to the vet but they wouldn't take him in because of covid 19. He dyed at 5 the next morning! Now I'm missing them both! God bless.

I’ve had two JRTs. One just recently passed at 18 yrs old and my first one passed in 2019 at 21 yrs. Both were fantastic dogs and once I get a home w a yard, I’ll look for another. The problem w longevity is the hole they leave in your heart. They both ended up having many of the problems JRTs have. Benign tumors were probably the worst to watch. But I cared for them as best I could. I highly recommend them for the right family. They both were very loving dogs but picked one person (me) and weren’t as close to others in the family. My older one didn’t do very well w my small son but she fell in love w him after he grew up and wasn’t messing with her so much. I miss them both so much.

My Jack Russell loves all dogs and people. Mine is fine on his own when I go to work as I have a dog flap into the garden. Nothing gets chewed. He loved to steal contractors tools when they do stuff in my house 😂

My precious jack Russell passed away 2 months ago. He succumbed to a soft tissue sarcoma of the neck. He was 14. I'd like to say he was the best dog I ever had. He was very loving, loyal, energetic, extremely intelligent and my whole world. I miss him so, so much. Words couldn't even describe the loneliness I feel without my faithful and loyal companion. He was so special I don't think I could love another dog as much as I love him. Hopefully we'll be together again someday.

@Professor Gammon I know people say that 14 yrs is a long time for a dog to live but as I look back at those wonderful years we had it seems like it was only seconds before he was gone..

These are amazing creatures. They almost require their own species rather than a breed of the common dog! Everything good about the dog archetype is hardwired into these guys from birth and if you give them attention, stimulation, fun, and training you will have a perfect pet (IMO). They're engaging, sociable, love people, they're excited to get out of bed (or over anything) and have a deep love for life. JR's are committed ballers and it seems that Fetch is their religion..They will NEVER quit until the task they want to accomplish is complete because everything is important to them. They all think they're Big-Shots and somehow, despite their compact size, they're convincing ("in the blue corner weighing in at a whopping 14 pounds...JR!!".) My JR (named "Jack," lacking creativity but he doesn't mind) will follow me anywhere and every day is better for having him. P.S. They're "fun-sized" too so you can sneak them in places easily.

I am blessed. I am terrified. I am blessed because for the past fourteen years my best friend has been a Jack Russell Terrier. He's made laugh when I didn't want to and go for walks when depression was holding me in bed. As far as having the drapes pulled, that didn't work for him and so sunshine was brought back into rooms that he discovered. When that ball came at my ankles, he would dance and bark until I picked it up to throw it which meant we had to go to the back yard. By now you know who God sent to help me out of my depression and you have to know why I am terrified. He's not as spunky and he sleeps a lot but I need to get over this feeling and enjoy our time together.

About fences - I taught my 2 Jack Russells to respect my barb wire fences and stay within its boundaries. And they do because they are in Jack Russell heaven - all nine acres big.😊 I am planning to raise sheep and plan to use the male for rounding up the sheep next year. Any tips on training them to coral sheep will be appreciated. Thanks

If I may throw out a request: I'd love to see a documentary on one of the smaller spitz breeds such as American Eskimo, Japanese Spitz, German Spitz, Icelandic Sheepdog, etc! The American Eskimo especially, since they seem to have a reputation for aggression sometimes, yet others say they're the best dogs ever...

My JRT is just an 8 week old pup and shes crazy! I love her but shes gonna run me dry! However, whatever home she had previously treated her so poorly. Shes afraid of everything, poor rascal. Shes getting more brave but shes afraid of the kitchen, her own food dish, and even the wind! When we got her, she was covered in fleas and she moved so little that we thought she had a neurological issue. Shes only just now started really running today. It was fun to see her fly!

I actually found online a security /personal protection dog training for Jack Russells, and ideally, if you had a pack/team of, say four, five or six, you could quickly thwart a bad guy from his evil doings should they come looking around your property or your person... you can teach each one of the dogs to attack a certain area of the body; the neck/shoulder, hand /wrist, back of the knee/hamstring, and crotch - even if female would get real worried if a dog attacked her crotch! In this, the dog would be trying to grab the male parts, and not finding any, bite the upper thigh in the same area. Various sizes of Russell dogs would work they can all jump like crazy, maybe the longer legged ones would do better at the knee/ hamstring. A smaller Jack could run up the body and go to the neck and really just be too small to catch a hold of a leg, but maybe the taller Buzzsaw would be the one to do the job - if you taught them to 'tack from the back - which definitely seems to me to be the way for the dogs to avoid being caught and thrown. The reason they should not be taught to go for the Achilles tendon on the ankle is because they could be kicked and stomped; The shorter dogs could definitely go for the crotch in the hand/wrist. Now, I don't know if this is the way they train Jack Russells for personal protection and I must add that, most of these tactics I've mentioned so far, are ideas from a military man who told me how his dog was trained. It was a technique of hand-to-hand combat in tandem with a soldier; the soldier would fight the face, and the dog would fight the back of the enemy. The dog would be baying at the enemy of course, gnashing of the teeth certainly, and furthermore, always stayed exactly opposite of his Soldier - if his Soldier was at the back of the enemy, then the dog was at the front of the enemy, you see what I mean? And if the Soldier made a strike at the enemy, or enemy makes connection with the soldier, than the dog takes a chunk out of them somewhere and gets the enemy to release the soldier. If that doesn't work then the dog is trying to go for the neck of the enemy or the crotch by command of whatever his Soldier tells him to do, such as bite the lower part of the forearm so hopefully the dog gets a hold of one of the bones and might also sink one of his fangs into the wrist and in between the tiny bones of the wrist to the carpal band and one of the three different nerves (radial, medial, ulnar) there, which will definitely make the hand malfunction. Which means the enemy can't operate his knife or his gun against the dog's Soldier or against the Soldier's dog. These are Shepherd type dogs they definitely have a big enough mouth and big enough fangs to do damage, but Jack Russell's got some pretty big mouths on them too and some pretty damn big teeth for a little dog. I had a 50/50 Jack Russell purebred × Heinz 57 that was at least 25% Dachshund, there was Shepherd, Heeler/cattledog and Pitbull in the mix too*. Suffice it to say, she had a long beak on her, good for snatch 'nd grabs. "Though she be but little, she is fierce" ** The only real requirement is to have an appropriately large mouth, or maybe I should say long enough jawline, face, whatever, you get the idea. But regardless of my not finding the right word(s), four Buzzsaws coming at you in unison, attacking different parts of the body will make you give up your mission if yer a badguy! * there was lots of different baby daddies. I knew the whole family tree, and not one of them looked related to the other - my dog's own mother look like an escapee from a genetics research lab it was a regular Frankendog. Basically a white dog with a shepherd beak and nose kind of a square head like a pit, body a little bit like a barrel-chested boxer, the back end looked totally gsd-legged and Bluetick & merled, front arms were thick and straight and far apart kind of like there was bulldog back too many generations ago for me to know. Tail, was that of any Shepherd, fluffy and long with typical black and golden tan hair and fluffy petticoats that were the color of GSD that branched out from the Blue Tick Merle in spite of it being there and coloring the rump, and face was black and white like a border collie yet the patches that cover the side of the face and the German Shepherd like ears were colored brindle instead of Simply black but there was no long hair like the Border Collie except what looked like dangly feathery earrings from the ears. Very odd. ** A Midsummer Night's Dream; act 3, scene 2; said Helena, about her friend Hermia, because of a "chick fight" they had. Alack and alas, there were no dogs present to help her against her momentary foe!
