I haven’t talked to him in almost 30 years…the internet had just been invented. I was able to track him down…he works at Korea Research Institute of Science and Standards (KRISS) in Daejeon. So…yes…that means I’m 52 attempting to learn Korean…to help me watch K-dramas and listen to K-pop. To be honest…I’ve never fit into any demographic classification…I’m just too weird. 🤣

Today I watched the 2011 Asian Cup semi-final between Korea and Japan (I'm very interested in sport and love watching old sport matches) and I noticed that the Korean players had just their given names rather than their family names or full names on their jerseys (which is not what I've typically seen for Korean national teams). I was a bit surprised by this since my impression (which could be entirely wrong) is that plain given names are considered more "personal" in Korea and other east Asian counties than in e.g. my native country Sweden. How do you typically refer to a celebrity in Korean, e.g. can you refer to them by just their given name?

Hey, thank you for your explanation! I always wondered why they end the names differently when I watch a kdrama :D I have a question: let's say my name would be Anna Smith and I would travel to Korea. When I intruduce myself to someone in Korea, would I also say my last name first? And if the name already ends with -a, like Anna, would a korean speaker add another -a or -ya when calling me? Thank you!

Yes my name is Bhuvana..would they add anothe 'a' or 'ya' .. please explain
@foxkit69
@foxkit69 3 жыл бұрын
You would just say "이름은 Anna Smith 입니다." Koreans understand western name order, and the name 'Anna' is common enough that you may could even find some native Korean girls named 안나. As far calling you, they would probably just say "안나씨!" unless you were significantly younger than them. Then they may either say Anna-ya or just simply Anna, as it feels more natural for native Koreans to only attach those particles to native Korean names.
@foxkit69
@foxkit69 3 жыл бұрын
@@gootybhuvana3859 Koreans usually prefer to only put those particles at the end of native Korean names, as it feels less natural on a foreign name. If they decided to do it anyway, it would be Bhuvana-ya. On first meeting, they would be more likely to use 씨 than 야, unless you were younger than them.

4:43 wrong information! It is true that even some Koreans pronounce 신혜 as 신헤(shin-heh) but that's not the correct way. It's better to make the correct sound 신혜(shin-hyeh) and sometime 시녜(shinyeh) only when it's fast-read. There's not a single hangul character with more than one sound. Some people can argue with 의 for it is pronounced 에 by so many people but obviously that's wrong too.

"한 지성" from Stray Kids, what his "name" & "family name" ? 🤔 Everyone calls him "Han"...is that his name or family name? & Whats with "방찬" ? 🤔
@ilayda5758
@ilayda5758 2 жыл бұрын
From what i know his family name is Han and his given name is Jisung. Im assuming since he is the only one with the surname Han in the group, its not confusing to use his family name.

The reason a lot of English speakers prefer to write it as "oo," is so that "u" can be used to represent the sound "eo." It sounds confusing, but English speakers don't know how to pronounce "eo." They would look at it and say "e-o" like the prefix "neo-."

That one would be used between people who haven't built a personal relationship yet as a sign of respect for the person. :)

Korean given names are usually one to three syllables. If your name is longer than three syllables when written in Korean, it may be difficult for them to say. :)

@@prettyprincess8777 Lol. Well you have options. You could translate your name into the Korean words for Princess (공주: kongju) and Hope (희망: himang), or you could write it as 프린세스호프 (Peurinseseu-hopeu). If I could make a recommendation, I would suggest taking the first syllable of each of those (공 kong; 희 hi) and making a name out of that. Or take 공 (kong) and change it to 경 (kyeong) instead, as Kyeong-Hee is a common name in Korea.

혜를 "헤" 로 읽어도 큰 무리가 없는 경우가 많습니다!! 제 발음이 나쁜건지 저는 평소에 그렇게 발음하는데 남들도 알아 듣던데용ㅠㅎㅎ 또 한국어가 모국어가 아니면 hye 의 풀발음이 특히나 어려우니까 헤 로 읽어도 충분하답니다
