I dislike this fondness for terming them furbabies. Possibly for some it has manifested to the point of attacking people because of a different view of dog care or whatever. Occasionally I see people who've placed ads giving away or selling their dogs requesting not to be abused! I theorize rising pet ownership correlating with increased stress from falling living standards.. nasty attitudes an unfortunate side effect.

@crunchytaco.4 жыл бұрын
Analia Jimenez Hi! You have to be consistent and committed. It’s a lot of work. My personal tip, hire a trainer. It will go so much smoother. Typically wait 2-3 weeks, have the puppy become comfortable in your home and hire a trainer. It’s gonna be tough, I’m still experiencing the puppy blues. You also need a strong support team, as one person really can’t raise a puppy on their own(at least not in my case).

I got my first dachshund in 2003, and she was with me until last July. After nearly a year without a dog, I'm bringing home a new doxie at the end of May 2019. I like the video presentation above, and would like to point out just a few bits about the breed. They can be very stubborn, and will bark their heads off unless you work hard to train it out of them. They love to burrow under blankets and will not be happy unless they can sleep with you...I think it's critical to their well being that they're able to do so. They really will follow you around and stare...sometimes it can be a bit unnerving to look over and see them looking right at you, lol. In my humble opinion, they are the most pleasing breed to have as a companion. If you get yourself a dachshund, you can count on having a loyal friend.
@vaskylark2 жыл бұрын
Boy you're not kidding. My doxie follows me everywhere, is a lap dog, licks my mouth like crazy, very affectionate, barks her head off, kills rabbits in the yard is amazing at sniffing out and then destroying and eating bunnies in their burrows. She likes other dogs but doesn't particularly like children and this is the second one I've had who didn't like children. Amazing sense of smell, does burrow under covers, couch cushions and does want to sleep right up against your feet or legs. Loveable dogs. I wasn't much of a dog lover until I got a dachshund.

I have had Dachshunds all my life. There are ramps all over my house. They have a ramp to their day bed right in front oof a big picture window. They have their own dog door and 4 acres to roam. We have gopher turtles in our area and our dogs can dig tunnels. Our dogs take on deer and the deer run from them. They take on snakes as a pack. One of our dachshunds got a black snake and twirled in in circles banging the snake against the 4x4 of the deck until it was dead. They take down water moccasins as a team. They hunt squirrels, rabbits,lizards any that come in their fenced in 4 acres. I had 2 that need back surgery and they fully recovered. I have loved many (20) and always kept them their entire life. Most I had at one time 5. Those were such good years. I’m a little to old to have that many now. We are down to 2 we don’t want to leave orphans so they will probably be the last 2. They have a been our baby’s and each ones time to go death was agony. My last to go was 18 most of them were 15 & 16. Our last ones are 5 and 2 one long hair one short. Each one out of 20 each had a different personality. They all had big personalities! They are our keepers and our boss. They are with every where. We put our shoes on to go out and they are ready to go on and adventure. I can’t even imagine not having a dachshund.

My doxies were both obedience trained so our outings were really enjoyable for all of us because they were able to be off-leash. I also competed in obedience competition all over the country and they always placed usually taking a first or second-no lie. Great dogs! Socialize! So important for ANY breed as is basic obedience training.

Garrett Staten I fuckin know right? That shit pisses me off. Idk if it’s a part of the way they train them or what not but I only use a harness on any dog that I’ve owned. They’re way more comfortable for the dog and they don’t get choked
@James14OO5 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminbass2607 Harnesses are great for most breeds, but not dachshunds because of the susceptibility to back problems. You can get leads/collars that will only tighten to a point and therefore will never choke the dog but will prevent them from slipping out. They stay slack until the dog pulls, so they are comfortable. Ultimately if you train the dog well enough it won't pull often and it won't be a problem
@benjaminbass26075 жыл бұрын
James Williams It’s actually the complete opposite. Collars can create neck/back issues. If you have a snug harness it evenly distributes pressure throughout the spine. I’ve had multiple dachshunds and none have ever had back issues. Idk where you got that info from but you hurting yo dog

Agreeeee!!!!
@lolalover242125 жыл бұрын
James Williams yeah that’s completely false, harnesses (especially vest-like supportive ones) are far better for your dachshund than collars. The way they walk show dogs is very particular and it’s only used to keep their head up and avoid sniffing/distraction and is not the way you should ever walk a dog for exercise.

I had all three types. Longhairs are laid back. Wirehairs are more play oriented, and smooth are scrappy alarmists. All of them bark a lot. Its the temperament, not the color your looking for. Does the dog want to play with it’s toy with you, or is your presence good enough,? When you come come from being away, does the dog greet you and leave, or does it prefer to follow you? Boys are more loyal and have smaller bladders. Girls last up to eight hours between pee, and aren’t as glued at the ankle. Dachshund breeds have issues with their backs eventually. They like to bark and chase wildlife. A harness rather than a collar would be better. Their teeth rot out of their head, so keep money on hand for that. They also love everyone’s poop- so make it a habit to pick up the yard after them. I have noticed females like to go looking for stinky stuff to roll in. A leash at all times when out of the house will save you frustration. They are scent hounds. Unless you have something better than what they are going to get, your dog will act deaf to your call. Extension leashes were made for this breed.

Just had to say goodbye to my 9 year old dachshund, Fritz. He is the third dachshund I’ve had to say goodbye to, and by far, they are some of the most loyal and loving dogs I have ever had in my life. My poor Fritz suffered from spinal injuries, which resulted in him being unable to walk or express his bladder on his own. Even so, he managed to live quite happily for 3 years using a wheelchair and a drag bag to maneuver around before we had to put him down due to his health rapidly deteriorating these last few months. Our vet believes this was caused by the depression he experienced after our female dachshund, Riley, passed away last year. Part of me doesn’t want any other dog besides a dachshund, because I don’t think any other dog could ever love me the way my dachshunds have loved me.

Man I want a dachshund so bad they're great. Goofy, stubborn, cuddly but also energetic. They're small enough to live in the city but will also force me to get out of the house for short to medium walks which is what I need because I'm bipolar. I don't want to live with roommates after my college year, but I need someone to get me up and keep me company. Dachshunds sound like the perfect stubborn little weiners to get me up and living when I'm down.

The show breeders going for super long backs and super short legs over the past hundred years have ensured you will pay thousands in ortho surgery bills at some point in your doxie's life, unfortunately. Along with watching your dog in incredible pain and the constant worry that another disc will slip just playing around.

Watching these people with leads round their necks makes me nervous....use a harness
@jennienguyen71375 жыл бұрын
These dogs are very muscular ,sturdy and strong. They are not tiny with delicate neck, dainty little Yorkies or teacups Pomeranians, miniature Poodles.... etc..As long as you don’t yanked their leash or pulled them. Holding the leash around their neck is fine. You want a secured leash or risked them outrun you. They love to run! My family called them miniature horses, they even galloping like horse. Mine sometimes walks like a show horse.

I couldn't even watch!! That short haired ones front feet were barely touching the ground cause it was being strangled!! Jesus christ!
@jennienguyen71375 жыл бұрын
Jessica Kaat I went back to watch it again. These people (with leash)are trainers for competition in dog shows. Their leads or leash are much thinner and more delicate than regular leash. All dogs will let owner or trainer know right away when they’re strangled by coughing ,gagging and stop walking then their head will lowered in distress with more gagging. The dog you’re talking about was fine. They need to lift head up high when being judge. Trainer signaled dog to lift head, chest, tail . It DOES looks bad but dogs can’t lie, especially if they’re hurt or in trouble. Trainers even used this thin lead for tiny toy dogs in dog show. My concern for this breed is that they can easily suffer from broken back when fall or held without support their back/butt, not collapse tracheae like tiny neck ,delicate teacup dogs. This doesn’t mean you can pull on any dog’s neck. I use the leash that prevent pulling on mine because my Dash is impatient and hyper, he pulls when excited. The winter I use harness/jacket combo for added warmth. These dogs don’t like extremes heat or cold so be careful with this breed.

I have a re-Rescue Dachshund-Lab mix. Yeah. That’s something Mother Nature in her humor and awesomeness made. I rescued him but he really just knew I needed him. He’s head of security and cuddles around here. Loves to patrol the yard (I have an acre) and I used to have a vole (underground rodent that causes a lot of destruction). Used to. He’s soooo happy when he’s “working”. He goes thru the dog door every hour or so and patrols along the fence line. Prances practically. So happy. He does love to hunt though. That’s his favorite and I think all the rodents in the area packed up and moved. Even the squirrels run up a trees and give a predator alert cry when they see him “On patrol”. I absolutely adore him. He’s so funny and he’s my constant buddy. His only weakness is loud sounds. Even people fighting with loud voices. He hides or runs away. How will I ever find a Dachshund- Lab mix again? I hope I never have to find out.

Dachshunds are great dogs. They are sweet and have a good nature. They are little clowns, but yes, they will never back down and think they are the toughest dog in the room. Their intelligence makes them easy to train, but they do have BIG personalities. They are loving and good with children. This is a great video on, How Not to Live with a Dachshund, these dogs are some much more than this even get close to explaining. They do need a lot more room than they claim on here, or they are not getting stimulated. If you allow the dogs to have room and get proper kind of exercise, they will build a lot of muscle and not so easily be injured. Any way would love a legit video on true outdoor working type, whether for play or actual working of this breed. They are truly amazing, and that doesn't come through on this. They come across as an extremely fragile foo foo dog, of which they are not!!!
@tatianeleite40815 жыл бұрын
Also can we talk about these awful collar used only to show off the dogs?? This baby 1:41 almost can put their paws on the ground! Dachshunds already have a tendency to have back problems, do NOT use these types of collars!! If you really want to use neck collars, you should at least use a bigger leash. Thats very painful to watch, and i bet its even more painful for the dogs...
@nope60215 жыл бұрын
@@tatianeleite4081 yeah I was wondering why they were pulling up so much on the leash? It just seems uncomfortable. I always leave dog leashes slack when I walk my dad's dog, neighbors dog or aunts dog... unless they're like trying to run off and bug someone but it's just odd to pull so hard. I wouldn't want someone tugging my neck so hard lol.
@DragynGirl5 жыл бұрын
@@nope6021 Those are show leads. You can tell a show lead from a normal lead, in that a show lead acts as collar and lead all in one, and is meant to show off the dog so will more than likely match its coat color. The dogs start training at a very young age to take to the lead and how to walk on a show lead. Believe me if those dogs were uncomfortable, you'd know it!
@sjsisjsjks5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the pet/show type Dachshund *is* extremely fragile. The super long backs and lack of leg make them a constant orthopedic risk to themselves, as any vet can tell you firsthand.
@DragynGirl5 жыл бұрын
@@sjsisjsjks Every breed has some sort of heath issue that may arise in any dog. If you know how to care for a doxie, and make sure they don't jump off stuff they aren't supposed to, don't overfeed them, etc, and make sure they get get their at least biannual check-ups and teeth cleanings/blood work-up, they can live very happy healthy lives. Like ALL breeds. they have their health quirks, you just need to know what you are getting yourself into when you decide to make one a family member. In my family, we have had 3 collies, a keeshond, a yorkie, a blue heeler, and a doxie that have all lived well into their teens. We currently have a 6 y/o collie and 3 month old doxie that have become fast friends, and the collie plays with the puppy as if it were one of her own (even tho she's been spayed since 6 mo of age).

I have had two standard smooths. My bitch has had a couple of issues with her back but has remained fit and lean and very good natured. The rule I go by and has worked for me is that if she can jump on it, she can jump off. She has glucosamine every day. She does stairs every day inside and out. The biggest miss in this conversation with dachshunds is how stubborn this breed is. They are clever and intense and so very, very willful. My male had the biggest presence of any dog I knew. He had amazing confidence. He literally stopped a train and a semi or two.

My first dachshund (weanie) was such a loyal and loving dog. My mom was the closest to her. Weanie loved all of us and like any dog she was playful, crazy, and very sweet. After around 2 years, she ran out of the house and got ran over. It was devastating. She didn’t deserve to go like that.. Over all it was safe to say weanie would not be our last dachshund. So we got another dachshund about 3 year later (Izzy). We got her from my moms best friends brother and his wife. I don’t actually know why they gave her to us, if I had to guess I believe my mom paid them in advance but I don’t know the real reason. Since I was a bit older I guess I could really notice that not all dogs acted the same. I could tell that this kind of dog was very energetic and didn’t like to be alone. Her original name was sweetie. We loved her but like most of our dogs she was stolen. After that we got more into big dogs like golden retrievers, huskies, Labrador’s, pit bulls. We had 1 other small dog which was a shi-tzu. That was really the only small dog we had before we got our big dogs. He was sadly attacked by a pitbull and passed. But we had a variety of dogs and it’s safe to say dachshunds really are the ones that grew on us and we plan on getting a new one!
