I learned about melodic and harmonic minor, but I was never taught WHY they exist. Thank you for showing me their purpose!!

in my opinion the "natural" descending is because we "imagine" harmony (harmonic functions) as we sing the scale and in this case the beginning of the descending scale is still not imagined as dominant so you just think about being dominant to resolve from the penultimate (D) to the last note C... and D belongs to the fifth (or seventh) chord so you can imagine the B natural and thus the dominant chord. The D is like a virtual leading tone with the dominant chord "imagined"... if that makes sense. Thanks for your videos.

ps. Im watching the everything Playlist. do you think this is how I should absorb your videos or is it literally everything
@12tone7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I have the Everything playlist 'cause I'm a channel completionist, so if you want to watch through everything we've ever made then that's the right way to do it. More recent stuff, though, tends to not be super connected to the older videos, so you could also just dive in to those immediately if that's more interesting. Up to you!

I´ve been taught that the ascending and descending mayor interval version is called bachian...

Interesting, I'd never heard that term before. Thanks for sharing!

Wait! It´s a different language, I don't know the term used in anglo-saxon countries... don´t take me too seriously, I don´t even know why they use the varied ascending and descending melodic scale in the first place. It's confusing... Because of it, people (me included) tend to think at first that, when going up in the melody, 6th and 7th should be sharp and when going down they should be natural. I believe (or read it somewhere, can't remember) that its purpose is symbolic, to state that when you get AWAY FROM THE TONIC, you are in the functional region of tonal-subdominant, and thus should be natural, while when you go TOWARDS THE TONIC, you are in the dominant region (most likely a cadence) and it should be sharpened.
