Can I ask you a question? Everyone says not to touch the crab, but stupid me I did and he's not moving AT ALL. He still feels, plyable, like he's still alive. But he's not moving and I really hope I didn't kill him. ( he just molted but his one leg is still stuck in the exoskeleton. It's been stuck for a while now And that's when I specifically noticed he wasn't moving and that's why I touched him to start with. I'm sick right now so I can't tell if he smells like iodine or dead fish. PLEASE HELP ANYBODY!

You can ask a family member or a friend/neghbor to smell the tank if you know someone with hermit crabs that would be the best person to ask

I have 2 hermit crabs (Rocky and Appolo) I have 3-4 inches of substrate in the tank. I looked at guide booklets from petsmart and it said, "the substrate should be 2 times taller than your hermit crab". And it looks like Rocky, my biggest one, is going down for a molt. He dug himself down to the very bottom of the tank, so I put a 2 liter bottle top over him. Is the substrate to shallow? If so I'll put in deeper substrate after the molt.

It should be OKAY but the deeper the better! btw most of the time those petsmart booklets are not good...

Dillon The Bird Boy , Pet Stores especially Petsmart and Petco are very wrong about hermit crabs they just want to make money off if you so make sure the do your research instead of ask those people💕

If your crabs are buried you don't want to dig them up as they will possible die from a disturbed molt.. If you are really worried they are dead.. Check there tank for a rotten fish smell if you smell that .then dig them up and check if they are dead..

If your hermit crab is molting would you not spray that spot if you were to have calcium sand since it harden when wet

You DO NOT want to use calcium sand plains out!!! It will get stuck in there shells and scratch there sensitive parts as it turns to concrete when water is added... It will also stick to the crab and his shell and he won't be able to switch shells and will die a slow painful death 💀.. I suggest when your crab is done molting immediately change out of calcium sand.. Play sand ..is what you want to use for them. I get my play sand from home depot (land scapeing section they have 50 pound bags for 8$)much better deal and way way way safer for your hermits (I have 5 in a 40 gal tank) 👌

Other hermits won't usually dig one another up unless they smell them.. Other hermits some times dig them up and will eat them if they do smell him... There's not really anything you can do to stop that ...if they do dig him up and haven't eaten him yet.. Stick him in a quarantine tank make sure humidity is higher then normal to help ease him.. Them dig him a little ditch(if he is still shedding)big enough for him to fit in NEVER REBURY a molting crab as it will kill him.. Then stick something over him(while he is in his ditch) like a coconut hut.. keep a variety of foods out for him and salt and fresh water so he can drink .clean .and eat when he feels like it.. and hope he gets better 👌

If you dig your hermit up while in molt... You need to put it in a quarantine tank away from all other crabs NEVER RE BURY IT it will kill your hermit.. When you have your quarantine dig a little ditch bug enough for hermit to fit in as then stick something over him.. Like a coconut hut.. And the humid eases molting so keep the humidity higher then usual for your hermit make sure to leave a variety of foods out for hermit and salt and fresh water so he can clean him self afterwards ....hopefully hermit will recover because disturbed Molters are really really sensitive.. 👌

Lindsay Conner It depends on how big the hermit crabs are. You could fit 3-4 small hermit crabs in a 10 gallon tank. You could fit 3-4 Medium sized hermit crabs in a 20 gallon tank. And 3-4 larger hermit crabs in a 40 gallon tank. Make sure they are small, medium or large crabs because it's important that the crabs have plenty of space.

can someone help me? i have a hermit crab that is underground molting right now, but there isn't enough sand in the tank, it was more of a temporary thing until i got a chance to buy more sand, but it decided to molt so, great. it dug all the way to the bottom, its been there for about 2 days now...i have two shells, sand, and some very soft moss, but my main problem is, is that i have another very....active (aggressive) hermit crab too, i want to take the aggressive one and put him into a new tank for a few weeks? i don't know if i should....can someone tell me what i to do?
