I appreciate you doing a hermit crab tank video but I strongly feel like you don't seem to know enough. 1. Eco earth bricks work great but bags of eco earth work just as well with water mixed in. Sand and eco earth mixed works very well too but I personally like to use just eco earth. 2. hermit crab needs a salt water bowl and fresh water bowl. Make sure the water is dechlorinated. 3. Hermit crab diets should be a wide variety of store bought food and fresh vegetable. Don't for get to have a cuddle bone or calcium powder. 4. The tank should be sprayed down daily to keep the humidity up. With out it your hermit crabs will suffocate. 5. It would be a great idea to add fake plants to the tank. 6. You need at least six inches of substrate some where in the tank even if the crabs are small. 7. It is not a good idea to put plain dirt in the tank. liz no spraying it own can cause a flood and just eco earth is too acidic n can more easily cause bacterial blooms. If you're struggling with humidity u CAN spray but its rlu not recommended. an air stone in your bowls works wonders.

I'm so happy you know how to properly care for hermit crabs and that you're teaching others to do the same. It breaks my heart when I see crabs stuffed in tiny critter-keepers with dry sand and a fresh-water sponge. I'll admit, I did that when I first had my crabs. Not that bad, although my care for them could have been better. But I learned that that was wrong, so I began to monitor the temperature in their habitat, create a humid environment, add soil/moss as well as damp sand, gave them salt & fresh water, etc. Sadly my hermit crabs did pass away years ago, but I plan on getting more once I move, so I'm looking forward to that! Now that I've learned about proper hermit crab care and I've experienced owning them, my next crabs are going to have the best life possible

Commercial hermit crab food you get from pet stores isn't usually safe for hermit crabs, from what I remember it was proven some foods can kill your hermit crabs. I use a mix I created myself, that my 6 hermit crabs LOVE. I got all my ingredients from a health food store, to make sure they didn't have any pesticides that would be bad for them. To make my food, I also used several different lists of crab safe food so I know that what they'd be eating is healthy

As far as the actual mix goes, I used oats, flax seeds, chia seeds, crushed walnuts, shaved coconuts, and crushed cuttlebone. Hermit crabs need to have cuttlebone, as its a good source of vitamins and minerals. Coconut is part of the hermit crabs natural diet, which is why I put it in the mix. They love their coconut more than anything in the world. I also used the chia seeds and planted it in part of their terrarium. The sprouts grew quick, and they enjoyed eating the sprouts that grew. From personal experience, using a homemade mix made my crabs more active than if I were to use pet store food

Same, I use this kit online that has fruit,shrimp,alfalfa, and all the stuff they need and they love it, Hermit crabs only need the size of your pinkey finger a day to eat

I also have a bowl of freshwater aswell as a bowl of saltwater in my Hermit crabs tank as they like to bathe in, and drink from, both. I have a heat mat attaches to one side of my tank to keep the tank at the right temperature

Great video! What I also recommend though is that it is best to mix Eco-earth with play-sand to better simulate their natural habitat. Also, it is dangerous for hermit crabs to have painted shells, but it is okay to buy a hermit crab with a painted shell, but once he/she decides to move out, you should remove the shell so there isn't any toxic shells available for your crabs. The substrate/soil should be at least 5-6 inches deep for the hermit crabs to comfortably molt.

Learned a lot. Pet stores hardly ever give instructions on care and housing of the animals and I feel SO bad for hermits when I see those tiny little plastic cages they sell, where the crabs can't walk around at all, have nothing to climb on, no way to bury under substrate and no addt'l salt water supply in the tank. This is such a good set up. I used to have hermit crabs but all these little white bugs kept showing up and I tried evening to get rid of them. The bugs stressed them out I think because they lost limbs. I made sure to always keep the humidity up and the water and sponges fresh. I have no idea to this day where the bugs came from.

The little white bugs were mites they appeared once in my tank, too. If the humidity was above 78% then those mites were there because they love to go to very humid places and also sponges are quite bad for hermit crabs because they cause bacteria and hermit crabs don't drink out of them either but you can set up a sponge in your tank out of reach of the hermit crabs then take it out when it starts collecting bacteria.

Thank you. Hermit crabs live between 20 to 30 years. I would agree, most probably die much sooner than that but because of bad husbandry.

If properly cared for a pet hermit crab will live 10-30 years. Also if you plan on getting hermit crabs do not buy them from pet stores or beach shops. The get them from the wild and that is wrong. It is a great idea to adopt hermit crabs online or in person because many people don't like to keep their crabs a long time. 😁

I would have gotten a hermit crab, however I learned that most are captured from the wild, and live a lot longer there. But it is nice that these little cuties got to live with an expert like you instead of someone who didn't know how to care for them, like me when I first got some. I still miss them all! :( 😭 🐚🦀

Personally I wouldn't suggest fish flakes. In my experience they either attract mites to an insane degree, or often contain mite eggs, because most land critters I've ever used fish food as a regular food for have had real problems with mite infestations in their tank. Not dangerous, just ugly and irritating..

I know Instant Ocean salt water conditioner is recommended but will Zoo Med Salt Water Conditioner work? 3. Will Fluker's Domed Lamp for hermit crabs work? I'm thinking of getting a Zoo Med Natural Cork Rounds Terrarium Shelter to double up as climbing and a hideout as well as the climbing background but what type of wood do you recommend (if any at all) ?? Does that type of moss have any advantages over other types of reptile moss and (if so) what are they? Also, is the soil necessary or recommended and why? Thanks!

I would recommend to stay away from pine wood products, because no one knows if pine is safe or hot for hermits. I used sphagnum moss not sphagnum peat moss as that will kill hermits, but they enjoyed it and ate it. Yes, the soil isn't optional so I would get Eco earth and quikrete play sand to mix with it. Alanna Gannon you can go to the hermit crab association website for a full list of safe foods, but as long as the baby food/ apple sauce is organic with no additional sugars added it's fine, I also go to the bulk section of heath food stores and get small amounts of dried fruits, grains, and seeds and nuts for them as well. Just no pesticides and no preservatives.

I don't know if my oldest crab died because his tank was too small or something got in his tank but he lived for 2 years. I had him in a tank that was pretty small for like a year and I got him something bigger. I put some sand in there and he had another hermit crab. I don't know what happened for sure

Hi I'm a first time owner of hermit crabs! I got a 3 hermitcrabs while my family and I were vacation. I've seen lots of hermit crab videos on KZbin. I've heard of hermit crabs molting and burring while they are molting, I've seen videos that say gravel is bad for them because they can burrow and molt. I have also seen videos that a sponge is bad because it collects bacteria. We have a fish tank and the little tanks we got from vacation I'm goin to put the hermit crabs into it. I have a few questions... 1: would it be ok if I use soil from outside and I clean it out really good and made sure there's no bugs? 2: would it be ok if I used a good cleaned bottle cap for the water?(I use bottled spring water on the sponge) (I don't want to spend alot on hermit crab stuff so..) I am having trouble keeping up humidity in my hermit crab tank. I use eco earth but not the block kind so it is not super wet. I spray down the tank a lot. Also how long can a hermit crab stay in it his shell before he needs a new one? The pet store did not have any good shells so we have to order some online. Last, I don’t think my new Hermies have been eating!!! I feed them commercial food, lettuce and carrots

what I use for humidity is bubblers in my pools, also not having the correct pools could be a reason you need one fresh and one saltwater pool that they can fully submerge in shell and all. another thing is your lid should be airtight to keep as much humidity in as possible theres a bunch more information on Facebook on the page hermit crab owners they are wonderful people with loads of information as not all the information in this video is correct.

Don't use calcium sand! It can get stuck to the crabs abdomen and possibly cause molting deformities! It's much better to mix playsand with Eco earth cocofiber (about 3-6 inches so they can easily burrow and dig)

My cage has eco earth everywhere and logs and branches and 3 dishes with salt water in it and I still give them sponges as well and I spray the cage and I have a light is having a light ok?

A light is good but I recommend a heat pad too. Make sure have a bowl of dechlorinated water. Don't use sponges. Check out Lori'sheartland

Like 7 Oranges isopods, or pill bugs are better, the crabs will eat them if they can catch them, they also break down the crabs waste and help prevent molding in the tank due to high humidity

Hi! (I know I didn't make the video but..) To answer your question, crabs require 2 bowls of water, one freshwater and the other saltwater. For the saltwater its best to use instant ocean saltwater mix for fish, or what she used in the video. Make sure the bowls are deep and big btw! Plastic bowls like small Tupperware containers are usually good for this. As for the substrate, don't use calcium sand! It can cause molting deformities for the crabs and get stuck to their abdomen. It's much better to use 3-6 inches of playsand mixed with Eco earth (you can order these online if you can't find them locally). Lastly, use only fresh food because canned food and petstore food is usually bad for crabs and can kill them. Oh and never use painted shells and always have more than one crab! +_CrabTube _ Thank you! But to be honest, the only one I didn't know was the playsand being used with Eco Earth, I always used a hermit crab sand that was completely safe for them. And I do only have one crab, but he was more hostile towards other crabs, so he was always separated from others. Most of the arguments with other crabs were caused by him, and never got worked out.

1. Eco earth bricks work great but have of eco earth work just as well with water mixed in. Sand and eco earth mixed works very well too but I personally like to use just eco earth. 2. I hermit crab needs a salt water bowl and fresh water bowl. Make sure the water is dechlorinated. 3. Hermit crab diets should be a wide variety of store bought food and fresh vegetable. 4. The tank should be sprayed down daily to keep the humidity up. With out it your hermit crabs will suffocate. 5. It would be a great idea to add fake plants to the tank. 6. You need at least six inches of substrate some where in the tank even if the crabs are small. 7. It is not a good idea to put plain dirt in the tank. Or sand because sand will garden in their shell and kill them.

Hermit crabs need both a salt water pool and a freshwater where they can soak in they typically drink fresh water but can drink the salt water.
