It's probably too complicated a video, but I'd be super interested in learning how you produce a video. Planning the episode and filming and all that. I work on that now, but I could really benefit from a specialized course like that

Thanks for sharing! I primarily shoot with a compact camera with strobes, but what I enjoy shooting with more is my Hasselblad SWC just like the late great Ernie Brooks. I find that I enjoy the dive much more as it is so simplistic with a few settings. Granted, I'm not trying to make a living with it and having to compete with others. Love the show!

Let me give you a good piece of insider information...if you don't need to have the very latest and greatest camera...you can often pick up a system used for a HUGE discount when other people upgrade. For example, if I didn't always keep the previous system as our second camera, when I bought my GH6 system, I would have sold my GH5 system. The GH5 is still awesome. And I would be selling it at something like half the new price. So that's a great way to pick up a system. Watch craigslist, facebook marketplace, and eBay for the system you are looking for.

@@BlueWorldplus I noticed that. At the most extreme I've seen underwater housing with bodies for like Canon 40D's and similar ancient hardware going extremely cheap. The housing is both magnitudes more valuable than the camera but also tethered to the relevance of it. At a certain point you're using the body because of the housing, and not the other way around. It was a tempting proposal since something like a Canon 40D or 5D2 can still produce terrific images in a talented pair of hands, at least in the stills department.

I'd love to see more about your underwater RED housing and your wet lenses. Are you going to look for underwater housing for the FX30?
@BlueWorldplus

No, the FX30 is only for above water. I prefer the better resolution of the GH6 underwater. If it was between the FX30 and the GH5, I would go for the FX30 underwater. Sony has great sensors.

@BlueWorldplus
@BlueWorldplus Жыл бұрын
Honestly for most applications, it's not really better. It has a higher 5K resolution (GH5 is 4K) which we like, but most people don't need. We like our GH5 systems enough that we kept them both. So we have (2) GH5 systems and one GH6 system.

Hey Jonathan, thanks for the video. Very interesting stuff. Do you ever use a Ninja V with your GH6? I always wonder if the screen size of the camera is large enough. Do you shoot in ProRes Raw?
@BlueWorldplus

No I shoot in regular Long GOP MP4 at the highest bitrate. We have tried shooting in all the super high bitrate codecs and for 99% of what anyone will do with the footage, you just don't need it. The only exception is the RED footage for giant screen....that's going to be blown up BIG and you need all the quality you can get.

A lot of people think that you need really bright lights in dark water. Not really. You need really bright lights in bright water (to compete with the natural light). So the answer depends on where you film most. However I will say that two lights are generally necessary just to get the coverage.

We use the Panasonic 14-42. On a M4/3 camera, the 14 is the widest lens that won't vignette and that gives a nice zoom-through range.

I'm curious how well the setup used for underwater filming is to record the sounds generated by the marine animals, I think after you can use a filtering technique to dampen the sounds generated by the diving equipment and you get the sounds generated by the marine life while performing certain actions, hunt, feed, play, etc A database of these sounds can be helpful to develop a communication system with these marine animals.
@BlueWorldplus
@BlueWorldplus Жыл бұрын
You can put a real hydrophone on them which improves the sound capture. But they mostly capture breathing.
@eugeniusro
@eugeniusro Жыл бұрын
@@BlueWorldplus Thanks for the reply, I totally agree with this issue, obviously a hydrophone worn by a diver will primarily record noises produced by the diver such as equipment noises and breathing, but I wonder if it is possible to remove these noises using AI filters, for example Davinci Studio has in the last update a kind of filter that separates the human voice from the background noises, I was using a VST filter for this, now the update from Davinci I see that it has the same performance, I think it is possible to set such a filter so that to remove the noises produced by the diver.

Hey Jonathan! Amazing video and super interesting to see the different systems you use. Question for you that you didn't cover -- how do you carry your cameras on land and in the water? Do you clip them off to yourself and if so where? Shore diving in particular I find it very hard to carry my camera and get geared up.
@BlueWorldplus
@BlueWorldplus Жыл бұрын
I generally do not clip them off, as this is a very good way to scratch an expensive lens. I like to keep a hand on it. If we know we are going to dive in a really strong current and we might need both hands, only then would I bring something to clip the camera to me. On land, we pack them up in pelican roller cases that are carry-on size and carry them on, which is another reason I like the smaller systems. The RED system has to get checked. So I hand carry the camera, and the housing goes into a pelican case that is checked.

Thanks for letting us have a look at your gear. I'm also looking at buying the FX30. I think is gives you the most bang for the buck if you live in a "Sony ecosystem" (I use FS5/Ninja V for topside work and Alpha 6600 underwater). OTOH, the new Panasonic S5 II looks even better re. value for money. Unfortunately not an option for me having invested quite some $$ in Sony glass (aka lenses). Would be great to see some underwater footage of the FX30 soon.

Nice to see the setup and to know what features you find important to look for. Question: Why Vaccum in a housing instead of pressure? You would think this would cause an instant flood in the event of an oring failure?
@BlueWorldplus
@BlueWorldplus Жыл бұрын
I know it's counterintuitive. Most floods happen at the waterline, or the dip tank because there isn't enough water pressure to hold the housing closed securely. This helps suck it together tightly. But also, with a gauge on the vacuum, you know if it's holding vacuum (ie. not leaking)before you hit the water.
