Actually it does work. When you get to the bottom of natural peanut butter after just stirring and storing in the fridge you will have harder chunks of peanut butter at the bottom of the jar. I put new jars upside down as soon as i bring them home from the store. When I open the jar and stir well. I don't have to struggle to get the hard peanut butter from the bottom! I have spilled the oil numerous times before storing it upside down trying to get the very bottom mixed in.
@inthekitchenwithmatt5 жыл бұрын
In my experience and in the video it only kind of worked. But that is still better than not working at all. haha the main point of the video is there are several articles that say you don't have to stir it at all, all you have to do is turn it upside down. Which indeed does not work, you still have to stir it. At least with my experience.

@@inthekitchenwithmatt I currently have a jar of creamy natural that I'm keeping at room temperature since we have been consuming it quickly. I haven't actually stirred it, other than the upper sides once or twice. Most of the time I simply spoon it out with ease. If I had it in the fridge I would have probably stirred it and kept it upside down until it was cold. One of the reasons it might not of worked as well for you is because you used chunky. The oil, peanut butter, and nuts all separated. Which ended up requiring you to stir anyway. If you get a chance try it with creamy pb and see if it's any better for you.
@inthekitchenwithmatt5 жыл бұрын
@@TheMombieZombie Yeah I think I even mention in the video that it may not have worked because it was chunky peanut butter. I will definitely give it a try with creamy at some point. You are keeping it at room temp? I was under the impression that most natural peanut butters need to be refrigerated after opening. It probably says it on your jar. But then again if you eat it super quickly it probably doesn't matter. Storing it in the fridge just preserves the shelf life. haha.

@@inthekitchenwithmatt places like whole foods and store like that will sell freshly made peanut butter in disposable plastic containers from the deli. They keep them at room temp. I think the main reason they say to keep it in the fridge is to keep the oil from separating once mixed. I had a jar of Laura scudder brand and it didn't say you had to keep it in the fridge. Since then I've kept it at room temperature. If you think about it, you don't need to refrigerate oils. They eventually go rancid but even if you kept it in the fridge it wouldn't prevent it.

@@TheMombieZombie Yeah I think it all comes down to self-life and that is why they say to keep it refrigerated. Every natural jar I have found has said it. Maybe you have to leave the jar upside down for many more days? Anyways Matt, I use my Kitchenaid hand mixer with one attachment instead of the 2. I press the beater down into the peanut butter, hold the jar very very tightly so it doesn't move in the same direction as the beater, turn on the mixer to medium as I slowly move the beater up and down and then all around the inside of the jar. This method works great for me and the peanut butter stays mixed. I store the jar in the fridge. Hope this helps a lot of natural peanut butter lovers. 😊

Maybe! But it seems like the oil would just accumulate more at the bottom which is the new top, kind of like it did in the video. haha. Cool tip with the hand mixer! I always store my natural peanut butter in the fridge as well. :)

@@inthekitchenwithmatt I agree... but, I flipped my 3 large jars over that are in the cupboard, just for the sake of, when I do use my hand mixer I won't have to worry at all about the oil possibly splashing, because it'll be at the bottom of the jar instead of the top. 😏

Pour off the oil (so it doesn't splash). In the the glass jar (without the metal lid - cover with a ceramic bowl to prevent splashing), microwave for 1/2 minute (more or less, depending on your microwave) until the peanut butter is soft. Let the jar sit until it is cool enough to handle. Return oil to the jar (for minimum mess, leave 1/2 the peanut butter & put 1/2 the oil in the jar) and stir easily with a wide knife. Repeat with the rest of the peanut butter and oil. (Save your blender for jobs it is capable of doing).

I have a problem which I encounter very often: some of the peanut butter (exactly the kind you have (Kroger)) will be solidified in the bottom of the can and it's a HUGE pain to mix all together. The only viable method is to dump out the runny stuff, scrape out the hard stuff, and mix and chop at it for a long time. It's seems that the oil has been separated from the peanuts for so long that it hardens into an impossible clump of hard "peanut butter." Any tips for this problem?
@inthekitchenwithmatt Жыл бұрын
You can try the upside down method and then leave it for much longer, the idea is that the oil will seep to the "new top" and mix with the harder stuff. But I encounter that problem as well. The other option is to make fresh homemade peanut butter and only make smaller batches when you need it. So you always have it fresh. I have two videos for homemade peanut butter in case you are interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmq3ppd7qdeil7s and kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5uwm4WNgciJbpo

This never worked for me either. But I found that stirring in a circular motion is not necessary or even preferable. Use a butter knife and stick it all the way to the bottom and bring it all the way up and keep repeating. The less oily and therefore stickier peanut butter at the bottom will stick to the end of the knife and you'll keep bringing that to the top while forcing the oil down until its mixed.
@inthekitchenwithmatt2 жыл бұрын
Yep I do that as well "plunge" method haha.
@mollybolton84256 ай бұрын
The idea is not to have to stir the peanut butter, but to make it easier to mix within the jar. If the oil is at the bottom, then gravity will help bring the solid peanuts toward the oil on the bottom, basically assisting in the stirring process. The technique I use is to store the jar upside down, and then when I need to use it, open it (as you did), but then stab the peanut butter w/a fork repeatedly at the top--the stabbing creates holes for the bottom oil to trickle up. That plus the gravity assist will make for an easy initial stage from which you can stir
@inthekitchenwithmatt6 ай бұрын
Um yes, that is exactly what the articles were saying that by storing it upside down you would not have to stir it, hence the video, which I completely debunked. You still have to stir it. Easier or not, that isn't the point. The point was refuting a claim that was false.

Kroger Natural Creamy is delicious and only contains peanuts & salt, no palm oil or sugar. If I want a little more sweetness, I mix it with some honey. After opening the jar, if you store it in the fridge (I keep mine on the door) it will stay solid after stirring. I use a flat butter knife, but I guess a spoon will work too. I think this brand has a little more oil than usual, but it only costs $1.99 and is all natural. Some of the so-called "natural" brands contain palm oil and sugar, even the expensive organic brands.

Love peanut butter but I just buy whatever is on sale (bad me). My mother used to buy the natural kind. As I recall, she would stir the peanut butter when the jar was first opened, and then she stored it in the fridge. Every day when she opened the fridge, she would flip the jar so that it was sometimes upside down, other times right side up. That seemed to work for her. Since the jar was being moved often the oil didn't separate as much.

With a spoon, you should have rehomogenized the mixture just like it was when it was first added, then stored it up-side-down. Gravity would have pulled the oil to the top of the up-side-down container again. The oil responds to gravity, not the "top" of the container.
@inthekitchenwithmatt3 жыл бұрын
Connor did you even watch the video? The point or myth I was busting is that that article said you "Don't have to stir it" And you can clearly see the oil at the "new" top of the container after I flipped it. Which is the actual bottom of the container it didn't get distributed evenly throughout the peanut butter like the article claimed. Regardless of how you store it, upside down or not, you still have to stir it. And you have your science backwards. The process is sedimentation. Gravity pulls the heavier peanut butter particles to the ground, and oil which are the lighter particles rise to the top. Gravity doesn't pull the oil to the top. Gravity doesn't pull anything to the top. :)
@connormagill42013 жыл бұрын
@@inthekitchenwithmatt Gravity would have pulled it down while simultaneously pulling other things beneath it. It quite literally was pulled to the top. Gravity pulls on objects (really from all angles) but for example gravity is not pulling a life jacket to the surface of the water in a canal. The truth is a tiny bit of gravity pulled it to the top the way you misinterpreted my statement. Relax buddy I just wanted to see a time lapse of the the separation from 'homogeneous' to 'separated' in an up-side-down container to affirm my understandings of gravity.
