Bug isn't a technical term when referring to anything creepy-crawly, that is just American slang. Bug is a technical term when referring to a group of insects known as the true bugs, which includes stink bugs, and i think leaf/tree hoppers as well.

Pairs of legs per segment. Insects have three pairs on one segment. Arachnids, like ticks, have four pairs on one segment. Millipedes.... Crustaceans have five pairs! Crawfish, crabs, lobsters, shrimp, etc.

Colloquially, both biologists and laypeople use the word "turtle" to mean all chelonians. In general, the reptiles referred to as turtles live in or near the water and have adapted to swim by holding their breath underwater. The reptiles referred to as tortoises typically live primarily in arid regions and are built for storing their own water supply and walking on sandy ground.

Eeeeeeep, I love tortoises! And turtles. (Actually they're both just called "kilpikonna" (literally "shield toad") in Finnish so I always mix them up too, Hank. (Okay, you can say "vesikilpikonna" and "maakilpikonna", "vesi" meaning water and "maa" meaning land.)) Anyway I love them! I'd love to have one but I don't really trust myself to take care of animals... I wanted one as a kid but mum wouldn't allow it; she hates all reptiles for some reason.

Bug is a technical term, but millipedes aren't bugs. True bugs often have a diamond shaped body and always a drilling/piercing mouth part. I'd post an example link but they've never allowed me to put links in a comment before. My favorite example is the Assassin Bug.

I don't know, actually. I guess I'm too used to seeing rude KZbin comments about a woman's beauty that I get self-conscious if I want to respectfully admire a lady, worried that someone would misconstrue it somehow as one of those rude comments. I'm not sure where the shame comes from, but I think being a complete loser in the romance department despite my best efforts has scarred me a little.

We were more concerned with covering the conversations and getting small inserts here and there. In the end, a 4th camera op, specifically one just with the job of shooting inserts of the poop would be a good addition. For this particular shoot I believe it was actually Me, Louey, and Caitlin on camera as Michael was just flying back in from Chicago... I think. It's been a while.

Judging from the samples currently decorating my windows, I'd say gull poop goes from green over purple to brownish black in the same defecation. Seabird poop is known for its very high contents of nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium and therefore used as manure (called "guano"). The white part more or less serves the same function as pee, but without the bird losing as much water as a mammal would, allowing for less water in the body and therefore lower body weight.

Please, popularism of science shouldn't act as deterministic assumption, thereby reinforcing the spread of misunderstandings of evolution, and its vulnerability for false attacks! The job of scientists is also to one day learn how to communicate in a nuanced way the principles, instead of being brilliant but applying sloppy semantics. Language is communication is sense of reality is transmission of knowledge is understanding!

While 'Bug' is a technical term formally used to identify an animal order, it is not used has Hank just said it was used, as that is a common usage but still incorrect. My dad works with insects and he had me learn this from a young age as because it also deals with basic logic, "All bugs are insects, but not all insects are bugs". Bugs are part of an order of insect called Hemiptera and sometimes more specifically the sub-order Heteroptera, which includes bedbugs, assassin bugs and pond skaters

Actually hank. the word bug does not refer to all types of creepy crawlies, that is the informal use of the word. the formal, and "correct" definition of a bug is a member of the order Hemiptera. An order of insects whos most prominent shared trait is their sucking mouth parts. The order includes cicadas, aphids and leafhoppers

(translates to "Ants in my pants") They had a thing called "Gissa bajset" ("Guess the poop"), where they showed some poop, three animals and a gave the kids a few clues. Then you were supose to guess to whom the poop belonged. I loved that show!

In the US "turtle" can be as broad as "tortuga" (both water and land) while "tortoise" refers just to land-dwelling turtles (though some, like box turtles, are still called turtles). I believe that in Britain (and maybe parts of the US?) there's a third term, "terrapin," which I think refers to freshwater turtles, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
@toxiPsychotic
@toxiPsychotic 11 жыл бұрын
No, that's "true bugs", not "bugs". All true bugs are bugs, but not all bugs are true bugs. Most people will use "bugs" to mean something like, all arachnids, myriapods, and hexapods. Sometimes people will say "bug" to mean "true bug" but unless stated otherwise you should probably assume that they're just using it to mean the definition above.

Correction for Hank: the word 'bug' outside of 'Murica refers to members of the order Hemiptera within the insects. Millipedes are certainly not bugs, but if you want a word to describe a group that encompasses bugs and millipedes, it's 'invertebrate'. That isn't actually a taxon though, unlike vertebrates, but it is a commonly used term for backbone-less creatures.

WHOA! HANK! I'm pretty sure a BUG was a sap-sucking insect. or an insect with a sucking proboscis from the group: Hemiptera - aphids, shield bugs, assassin bugs.... And to better describe the Millipede - Arthropod. It's definitely not a bug - but your look to the camera when saying that - kinda made it sound like fact. :S and I'm not an Etymologist or Entomologist.

You are of course right to focus more on the conversations. There were a few good shots of Yuccu (the tortoise IIRC) towards the end too, which is good because the tortoise's shell is quite pretty. The green, gelatin-like thing was weird enough to take a closer look though. I take it that these talk show videos are done in two takes or something like that?

Uric acid production by birds and repltiles is actually less efficient in terms of energy, but it conserves water (we have to void a lot of dilute urine due to urea toxicity, they void very little water). This is one of the reasons they (esp reptiles) can go a long time without water, whereas we can barely go a few hours without being uncomfortable.

When I hear turtle, I guess I think of terrapin, and I believe believe (Not sure abut any of these) that they can swim, but also walk on land, can retract into their shells, and hibernate in underwater mud. Some examples would be a painted turtle, box turtle, or snaping turtle. Maybe that is a turtle and a terrapin is something different, I don't know.
