1:16 The subfamily of the family Felidae is spelled Pantherinae, not Panteranae. The family felidae also includes felinae, which are small and medium sized cats like cougars, cheetahs, lynxes, ocelots, and domestic cats. Pantherinae, or big cats, include tigers, lions, jaguars and leopards.

There are no poisonous snakes. There are venomous snakes. Poison is ingested while venom is injected via bite or sting. While some snake parts may be toxic for humans to consume, some snakes are venomous, not poisonous.

@ElaMongrella
@ElaMongrella 10 жыл бұрын
Actually, she is right. Panthers are cougars. They can be black or beige/yellow/whatever you want to call it. The fact that most people call black leopards or jaguars "panther" as well (because they initially thought they were all black cougars), makes no difference. It's a mistake, made by the public, to call black leopards or jaguars "panther". Actual panthers are not in that group.
@syystomu
@syystomu 10 жыл бұрын
Ela Mongrella I got curious so I looked it up and apparently "panther" can be correctly used of any big feline, so there's no one specific species that's THE actual panther. The usage seems to depend on the region: for North Americans it's a cougar, for South Americans it's a jaguar, for Africans and Asians (and I think most Europeans too) it's a Leopard. The word comes from Greek (through Latin) but it's originally from some unknown other language (possibly some Indo-Iranian language that has already disappeared?), related to the Sanskrit word pundarikam which means "tiger". Using it for cougars is a relatively new thing, obviously, since it's an old Eurasian word for an animal that Eurasians wouldn't have even known about before early modern period. Scientifically, I guess you could argue that it would mean members the Panthera genus?
@ElaMongrella
@ElaMongrella 10 жыл бұрын
Yes, but she was referring to the cougar as panther, when she said it wasn't in that group. Whether or not the term can be used for others, is irrelevant, since it's obvious what she meant. Even if technically, some panthers are in the group, she was specifically talking about cougars.

its unused and rudimentary because evolutionarily their ancestors have two, like we do, but just having one fits their body structure much better. And that one is already quite long and thin, with two it would be even thinner. You cant have a lung that is too thin or it wont breathe properly and instead just push the same used air back and forth.

Panther's are not an actual species of cat. The term 'panther' is a bit of a catch all. The term is most often used to describe 'black panther's' which are actually leopards or jaguar' with melanistic genes. It is also attributed to 'panthers' in Florida (which are cougars) Cougars belong to the Puma genus of the Felidae family. Which is quite cool, because the Felinae subfamily that the cougar belongs to is the same subfamily as the domestic cat. I love cats.
@DavidDigh
@DavidDigh 11 жыл бұрын
The most famously known Panthers I've heard of, in the USA, are Melanistic Leopards and Jaguars as well, which would put the 'panther' firmly into the Panterae family. I wonder if Hank could get a reply as to why this episode seems to state that is false. My main thought is that on research, I found that 'Panther' does not officially relate to any specific big cat species and, instead, describes the melanistic varieties of certain known big cat species (leopard, jaguar, perhaps others).
@WhitneyBuchman
@WhitneyBuchman 11 жыл бұрын
The Florida panthers were purposefully crossed with the Texas bloodline of pumas. Their populations became too small and issues with inbreeding were showing up. This ended up strengthening the pumas of the Florida region. The longest snake in North America is the Eastern indigo snake. It shares the common name of gopher snake, but is not in the same genus as bullsnakes, pine snakes, and this gopher snake.
@WhitneyBuchman
@WhitneyBuchman 11 жыл бұрын
I love the show, but this episode I have some issues with. I am a zoo educator by day and there were some inaccurate statements. The term panther actually does not belong to any species. It is a generic term attached to all large cats that are melanistic (black). Commonly used to describe black jaguars, pumas and leopards. Also there are no poisonous snakes to my knowledge. There are venomous and nonvenomous. Their toxins require injection to work. Poison in biology requires adbsorbtion.
@themonkeymoo
@themonkeymoo 11 жыл бұрын
It's an artifact of evolution.As snakes were evolving from an earlier lizard-like reptile and their bodies were becoming more cylindrical and proportionally narrower, having two symmetrical lungs was probably detrimental in some way. The snake's musculature probably works better with a single lung than with two, and the feeding method(swallowing prey whole) doubtless would provide some difficulties with breathing while swallowing(which may also have been mitigated by allowing one lung to atrophy

The term Panther means a lot of different things, mostly dependent on where the speaker is from. In the US, most people use Puma and Panther as synonyms. In South america Panther is used to refer either to black Jaguars or as synonymous with Jaguar (regardless of colour). In the UK I've heard both your version (Panther = black Leopard) and the distinction between Asian and African Leopards (Leopards are from Africa, Panthers are from Asia).

funny story about pumas - when i was in the 10th grade i was taking a zoology class and they came up. my teacher and i got into it in the middle of class - i kept telling him that pumas, mountain lions and cougars were all the same thing. he denied it adamantly with that annoying little indulgent smile on his face. i eventually gave up and dropped it. the next day he pulled me aside and apologized, saying he was wrong. Apparently the rest of the students didn't deserve to know. fucking ego.

Technically any animal in the Pantherinae subfamily can be called a panther, so melanistic versions are called panthers because it is harder to identify cats without there usual markings. Puma, which they were talking about, used to be thought to be in the Pantherinea subfamily, and have been called panthers. Pumas are now believed to be in the Felinea subfamily, so calling it a panther is inaccurate, but still used.

Yes. I did look Wikipedia to find the proper term in English to describe the particular colouration of an animal (English is not my native language). The fact that black jaguars and black leopards are called panthers is something I learned in a zoo. My intention was never to offend anybody (on the contrary I admire Hank), and aware as I am of my "non-biologist" status I write my commentary as a question with not the smallest intention of sarcasm, which means I did not "assume" anything.

Wikipedia says that a panther isn't actually a species, but a term that can apply to many different kinds of cat including the "florida panther" which is really a subspecies of cougar. "Puma" is a genus that contains cougars and jaguarundi as well as a colloquial term for a cougar. Sorry for the terminology stickling, but this is an argument I've been in pretty much my whole life.

It's strange, as a Brit I got very confused when it was said panthers weren't a member of Panthera, because I have always known melanistic leopards and jaguars as panthers.
