Do you prefer the memorize-and-test spelling approach or the teach-the-rules spelling approach?

I love that AAS teaches the whys! It it is so helpful to understanding. I feel like I was never taught the whys and that would have been so helpful to me when I was learning to spell. Thanks for sharing!

I actually do both I have her memorize and once she knows it we learn about why and rules. They are so responsible, easy and quick, she does fantastic with memorizing but I see the value in knowing why, when and how to. I never learned it and I did very well in English, so I can only imagine how much easier this will make her learning journey.

Thanks for this! We are trying AAS and AAR this year. To us, it just seems to make sense to help them understand the "why" by learning the rules. We teach them the rules of grammar, so why would we not teach spelling rules?

OMG! I'm in the same camp when it comes to not knowing my spelling rules! We're using Spelling U See and my girl has been frustrated not knowing when to use C or K struggling with blends and plural silent E, etc. And when she asks, I don't have an answer right away... spelling hasn't been my favorite to teach 😬

We started with spelling u see and used it until last year. I dropped it. It did not serve us. After using AAS 1 last year, this is def the program for us.

@@MakingEverydayMagic I'm considering switching after seeing the vid. We did spelling just this morning and she told me she couldn't figure out when to spell with c or k. Knowing the rules might help!

I'm not sure if I should start with all about reading or spelling? I have a 7 year old daughter, very good reader, not great or confident in spelling

I would take the placement test available from All About Learning for the All About Reading program. Since she's only 7, if you're interested in their spelling program and she tests above All About Reading level 1, I would start with All About Spelling level 1. They recommend starting AAS after completing AAR level 1. They both use the same rules and phonograms, so the spelling is reinforced so well. It's been amazing for my girls.

We’re starting AAR level 3 next semester but we haven’t done AAS should I start in level 1 ?
@MakingEverydayMagic

I believe that they have a placement test on their website that might help. I started both of my girls, even my 4th grader at the time with level 1. I wanted them to learn the rules. I just let her go at her speed, and she did 2 levels this year.

@@MakingEverydayMagic That’s great to hear! I was just looking at the placement test and I think level 1 is going to be a great refresher for some of the rules we learned in AAR level 2 and I already know she will like the lesson style. Thank you!

My daughter is just about finished with AAR level 3, and we are on lesson 10 of AAS level 1. She’s flying through. But I think that’s because she could focus on the spelling rules, instead of the reading rules. If that makes sense
@MakingEverydayMagic

It does! AAS after AAR is easier for us, too. I think because AAR laid the foundation.

Im sorry. I must have missed the explanation. Why is her daughter using AAS 2 in the first grade? Why did she skip level 1? I think it is recommended to do AAS after the child has completed AAR 1.
@MakingEverydayMagic
@MakingEverydayMagic Жыл бұрын
She didn't skip any levels of either, she moved quickly through Pre reading. You are correct. AAS 1 is recommended after AAR 1. That's how we did it. I do have videos here on this channel covering all of that.
