I thought I was kinda bad at singing because "normal" range female songs are usually right in the crack in my voice, in the hardest place to sing comfortably. But I just need to embrace my low range. Higher is not better.

I'm newish to singing (proper, that is...I sang to my kids when they were little). I joined a choir and really feel like I'm bad at singing. I really have to push with my abs/diaphragm to hit a C5. I can rarely hit D5 with support. It usually comes out as a C# at best. But most of our alto songs in the choir are right there. I feel like I'm singing out my ears. At home, when I need a break from practicing, I'll sing the bass and tenor parts. I can hit F2 (my bottom note before cracking), but I have not worked on or developed my lower range. Maybe I should.

I have always loved singing. Even signing in the shower has always brought me peace. Yesterday I tried an app that detects range & it turns out they labeled me as an alto! As a total beginner with only amateur skill/practice I feel that vocals are something I would love to keep working on. The best part about vocals is that your instrument is your own voice and I find that so cool. I can’t misplace my voice and it costs absolutely nothing to practice. The gratitude I feel from realizing my potential is such a beautiful feeling. This is my first video I’ve watched since seriously considering working on my vocal skills so thank you for all the amazing info.❤️

Altos: Cher, Rihanna, Pink, Melissa Etheridge, Shania Twain, Madonna, Ann Wilson (from the band Heart), Micki Steele (from the band the Bangles), Sade, Annie Lennox, Stevie Nicks Contraltos: Tracy Chapman, Kareen Lomax, Amy Winehouse, KD Lang, Judy Garland, Etta James True contraltos are rarer than altos.
@Eniral4413 ай бұрын
Sadly, it can be very frustrating being a contralto. 1st, when your low note is F2 it's not surprising that you can't hit a C5 or D5 when you are untrained. You get a lot of flack for it in choirs too. I feel like I'm singing out my ears up there and I was told I just was not trying very hard. 2nd. People in passing, or people who are just not the ones who have tested your voice, act as if it is IMPOSSIBLE for you (anyone) to be a contralto because they are rare. Rare doesn't mean impossible. I know a lot of people who just don't sing because of these frustrations and I sometimes wonder if they aren't quite as rare as we might think. They are certainly more common in some other countries. Not to say they are "common", just more so than the Western World (Europe & North America) realizes. Most of the people I know, outside of my family, who can hit that low are instrumentalists who found school choir too frustrating.

This reminded me of how I used to sing Rihanna's "Towards the Sun" to myself as a little girl and enjoying the low verses and struggling with the chorus. I'm a contralto (Bb2-C3 at my lowest on any given day), but I have a SUPER bright tone. Think newborn baby bright. My voice teacher was convinced I was a soprano that just didnt unlock my voice yet. As I'm struggling to hit an E5. And then was SHOCKED when I accidentally sang down the octave in the tenor range because she never gave me a chance to sing in my comfort zone. Trust me. You do not want to be a contralto. Boy sung songs are always about one semitone too low, other boy sung songs are too high and you have to face the fact that pop countertenors are out of your range (on the high end!), and basically every song done by a female is too high somewhere. I can sing about half of every single song in existence. Just not a full song of anything without transposing a single section.

How are u a contralto thats my exact lowest range but I can easily sing high
@Tootsiepop2014 ай бұрын
@@myaaishere Contraltos are determined based on various criteria. I meet literally all of them. That's how I'm a contralto. Can't belt above c5? Check. Can sing below e3? Check. Can sing below c3? Check. Can hit a2? Not every day. But about one of ever 7 days. Can hit g2, I did once. More comfortable in low range than high? Check. What criteria do you imagine I don't meet for being a contralto? Cool you have a broad range. I don't. My sister does though. She's probably about d3-e6. But she's a soprano because she's more comfortable in her top end, finds singing low uncomfortable, and can hit those high notes.

I was that way. It was intimidating. I recorded myself a lot since I was 13, still do. That way I could listen to myself and tweak on things I needed to work on. There are times when I hate the sound of my voice though and i give it a rest do a few weeks, zero singing. Sang a few months in a youth choir and our choir master shifted me from soprano to alto. I thank him for that because I wouldn't know. I was younger then but he could hear already that I was a contralto. I suggest taking the time to find singers with a similar tone and study them. Their delivery, their techniques, I watched everything, even the gestures of the mouth when they sang. I thank KZbin too for teaching me because since that short time in the choir I just started teaching myself how to sing. I'll send links that I think will be helpful
