All about the Brussels Griffon? | What you need to know!

The Brussels Griffon is a sturdy small or toy breed of dog that originated in Brussels, Belgium, where they were kept in stables to hunt and eliminate rodents. They weight 8 to 10 pounds and have a life expectancy of 10 to 15 years.
The Brussels Griffon personality is very unique. Some may be outgoing and silly, while others are serious, shy and timid. They prefer not to compete with other dogs and enjoy only 1 sibling or all the attention from their owners. The Brussels seem to enjoy mature owners and need to be supervised around young children who may hang on them, are clumsy or too rough.
The Brussels Griffon was created by mixing Affenpinshers, pugs and English toy spaniels. Giving them two coat consistencies of rough or wirey and a smooth coat. Accepted coat colors are red, black and tan, black and a color called Belge pernounced - “Beige” , which is a two-colored hair shaft ending with black on the top giving a smokey appearance.
And the first Brussels Griffon was registered in 1883 and became AKC recognized in 1910. The first Brussels Griffon was thought to be seen in the foreground of the Jan Van Eyck painting The Arnolfini Marriage, but what really gave them international fame and popularity was when the Belgian Queen Marie Henriette and her daughter began breeding and showing them and then exporting this little noble lad to other countries.
The Brussels is known for having a classic grumpy human or monkey like facial features, which some people believe was the dog breed that inspired the little Ewok look in starwars!
The Brussels does not require a lot of exercise and are often apartment dogs and can get their exercise playing and running around the house.
Ok, So there are actually 3 varriations of Brussels Griffons or Griffon Bruxellois, The Belgian Griffon (Griffon Belge) and the Petit Brabancon, all descendents from a small rough-coated dog called “Smousje” , haha which is a group of small breed grumpy dogs found in Belgium. Just imagine this being your street dog - I cant help but laugh - just too cute.
So why aren’t there many Brussels Griffons? Well, as this dog was becoming popular the First and Second world war proved to be a disastrous time for this breed. By the end of the wars there was almost no original native Brussel Griffons left. It was through the help of England and a few imported dogs that helped to bring this breed back again.
The Brussels Griffon is slowly making a come back but is actually a difficult breed to find and is still only the 97th most popular dog breed.
One little Brussels Griffon puppy can cost anywhere for $1,000 to $4,000.
They have health issues that other smooshed face dog breeds have, such as heat intolerance and breathing issues.
But 2 health issues common to Brussels which are congenital include:
Syringomyelia - which is a serious condition where fluid-filled cavities develop in the spinal cord and near the brain. The nature of this disease is that the dog’s skull is too small for his brain, which blocks the opening at the base of the skull and prevents the flow of spinal fluid. Because of this backup of fluid, pockets of fluid called syrinxes are created in the spinal cord which causes extreme pain in the shoulders, neck, head, and chest. They are usually very sensitive to touch in these areas and some dogs show weakness of extremities and possible paralysis.
Chiari-like malformation or CM is another genetic malformation in small toy breeds is when: Their small skulls crowd the brain and result in herniation of the cerebellum and brain stem through the foramen magnum. About 50% also have syringomyelia.
Some small dogs may have these congentital malformations and only present with “Phantom scratching” at the base of their skull, most likely from irritation or a feeling of pressure.

My guy is a Brussels Griffon Mix. He's 21lbs. Has the human look. Doesn't eat much. Hardly anything. Doesn't play (with me anyway) doesn't like loud noises. But is a great lap dog. Neighbors here call him Chewbacca.

That's the same as my Griffon, I'm clearly his human, he follows me everywhere but he likes for me to hold him and cuddle with him. He only plays with my nieces and nephew as well as my best buddy. For whatever reason, he doesn't want to play with me, but clearly loves me a lot. Kinda weird, but I guess I'm the uncool papa that he goes to for comfort, not fun lol.

A LONG TIME AGO THE GRIFFS WERE 20 POUNDS AND UP AND GRIFFS TODAY CAN GET UP TO 20 POUNDS. THEY JUST AREN'T "SHOW DOG" STANDARDS. LIKE HUMAN MODEL STANDARDS. THAT'S ALL. YOUR GRIFF IS A PERFECT GRIFF AS FAR AS GRIFFS GO. ❤ ALSO, SPAYING AND NEUTERING MAKES DOGS AND POSSIBLY CATS GAIN WEIGHT FOR SOME REASON. IT MAYBE THE MISSING HORMONE? VETS DISAGREE, BUT WHEN I SPAYED MY FIRST GRIFF SHE BALLOONED UP LIKE BEACH BALL. PRIOR TO HER SPAYING SHE WAS SLIM. IT WAS VERY SUDDEN POST SURGERY.

Ohhhhh, it was to short, I would have liked it to be more specific about other health problems. I work at a vet clinic in Quebec and I don’t see this breed in our practice, only two clients have this dog. I would like to have one someday. Thank you 😊

I have a Pug/Yorkie mix…& he look’s extremely similar to this breed. Even my iPhone thinks that’s what he is. Anyways, he’s the best dog I’ve ever owned. So smart! Very kind & playful.

I have a Brussels here in Florida. 11 years old and is the most faithful gov ever. They need lots of love and attention to get a true bond with you. Not to be left alone more than 6 hours a day. He loves raw meat. Can live to 18 years from what I understand

I have a wonderful one year old Brussels Griffon (Petit Brabancon). My only confusion is that I hear the breed's name pronounced interchangeably as a Brussels "Griff-ON" and/or "Griff-IN." Even in this video both pronunciations are used.

I HAVE HAD SEVEN GRIFFS IN MY LIFE AND I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH EYES BECAUSE THE EYES WERE SO LARGE AND WITH LUXATING PATELLA. THREE OF THE SEVEN GRIFFS I'VE HAD HAD LUXATING PATELLA. THE GROOVE IN THE BONE BEING SHALLOW AND THE TENDON SLIPPING OUT. NONE NEEDED SURGERY THOUGH FOR EYES OR LUXATING PATELLA. I WAS ABLE TO SLIP IT BACK IN WHEN MY LAST GRIFF COULDN'T STRETCH HIS SHORTENED TENDON OUT TO STAND ON HIS LEG. ALL OF MY GRIFFS WERE AND ARE ROUGH COATED. MOST HAVE HAD SPICY PERSONALITIES, ALTHOUGH A FEW HAVE HAD TIMID PERSONALITIES. CURRENTLY I HAVE ONE WITH A VERY SPICY PERSONALITY AND ONE IN THE MIDDLE AND ONE TIMID. SIBLINGS. THEY ARE VERY SMART! I ACCIDENTALLY CUT THE QUICK ON ONE AND I FELT SO BADLY I CRIED AND HELD HIM. HE DIDN'T CRY, BUT I DID. HIS BROTHER SAW THIS, SO HE PRETENDED THAT I CUT HIS QUICK AND CRIED WHEN I CUT HIS NAILS. I LOOKED AND THERE WAS NO BLOOD, NOT EVEN THE LITTLE PATTERN ON THE NAIL SHOWING THAT I WAS CLOSE TO HIS QUICK. HE PRETENDED THAT HE COULDN'T STAND, SO I CARRIED HIM ALL OVER. I SLEPT WITH HIM IN MY BEDROOM OVERNIGHT IN CASE I HAD TO TAKE HIM TO THE EMERGENCY VET. THE NEXT MORNING, I REUNITED HIM WITH HIS BROTHERS AND HE TOOK OFF RUNNING TOWARDS THEM BECAUSE HE WAS SO HAPPY TO SEE THEM! THE LITTLE STINKER PRETENDED TO HAVE HIS QUICK CUT TO GAIN SYMPATHY FROM ME BECAUSE I DOTED ON HIS BROTHER FOR CUTTING HIS QUICK!!! THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH HIM!! CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?!!! THIS IS WHAT YOU'LL BE DEALING WITH IF YOU HAVE A GRIFF GRACE YOUR HOME! YOU'LL BE OUTSMARTED!! LOL!! ❤❤❤! THEY ARE CLEVER LITTLE DEVILS! AND VENGEFUL! THEY WATCH YOU WITH THOSE BIG EYEBALLS! THAT HEAD MAYBE SMALL, BUT THERE IS A LOT OF BRAIN IN THERE ALWAYS WORKING!!! THEY ARE SO MUCH FUN AND FAST LEARNERS TOO. I TAUGHT MY GRIFFS TRICKS IN ONE DAY. THE JOCK IS VERY JEALOUS AND THE TIMID ONE GETS BULLIED, BUT IS VERY VENGEFUL AND WEES ON THE WALL IF HE ISN'T WITH ME ALL THE TIME. I LOVE THIS BREED SO MUCH AND I CAN'T SEE LIFE WITHOUT ONE OR TWO IN MY LIFE FOREVER. THEY ARE FUN, FEISTY AND VELCRO DOGS. OH, MONTY IS A VERY HANDSOME BOY. ❤. A SIDE NOTE... I'VE HAD TO EXPRESS ANAL GLANDS IN ALL OF MY GRIFFS EXCEPT FOR ONE OUT OF SEVEN. THE VET OR GROOMER CAN DO IT FOR YOU EVERY NAIL TRIM IF YOU CAN'T DO IT. DON'T LET IT/THEM GET IMPACTED. 😢. IT'S JUST SOMETHING THAT YOU DO FOR YOUR LITTLE BUDDY(IES).

If you get a roomba kind of thing that helps to vacuum floors more regularly… for couches, rubber gloves, for clothes a lint roller..if it’s still too bad, if they wear a thin cotton tshirt that might prevent the hair from getting everywhere when they shake..
