@@myemail1018 the big thing is to keep them down and dry. If theyre in wet areas, that can cause a lot of ear issues. As for the hind legs, that just happens over time, similar in most animals, especially larger ones. Theres certain stretches you can do with the dog to make it a bit less bothering to them, but overall, it just happens.

My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I have a DRGD (Dog Rescue Guardian Dog - LOL). We rescue small dogs and occasionally have lone coyotes walking by our fence line (we have a fenced in acre of property). It is a chain link fence with coyote rollers on top but for insurance, we always have a GRGD. Our first was an 85 pound German Shepherd - Golden Retriever - Wolf mix. When we had her, she would frighten away coyotes from our property. Our latest DRGD in training is a Great Pyrenees puppy. She was three months old when she joined our family and she is growing by the day... She is about 5 months old now and will do a circuit of our fence line every time she goes out. We already see her guardian genes appearing! When she is full grown, I feel confident that no coyote in its right mind is going to try to climb our fence... Update - Serena is three years old and is becoming a perfect dog for us! Although she is small for the breed (68 pounds) her DNA test indicates she is full Great Pyrenees. She is the perfect size for our needs and is very powerful. I have seen he bend the links of a chain link fence with her jaws because she was pissed off that the fence prevented her from pursuing a coyote that she had chased away by barking. She is unusually obedient for Pyr and really doesn't bark all that much either. Just a great addition to our family... She just lpves little kids... What is not mentioned very often regarding the Great Purenees is her blazing speed. She can cover six feet or more with every bound.

I have 3 Pyrs. All inside dogs (we live in a neighborhood) and they are soooooooo laid-back. Two of them came from a line of LGD and I got them as puppies from a farm at 13 weeks old. They are so protective of my 9 year old. They have adapted to being pets so well. Sleep through the night and they actually listen lol. Best breed ever.

I'm so glad you posted this! We just got a 9 week old male. After our male Rottie passed away a few months ago, we wanted to get a dog with a similar temperament. I hope our new puppy takes well to being an indoor dog!

She sleeps in hers all night in our room (prefers it) and is very sweet with our kids. She was a hard puppy to train since we got her at 4mos from a shelter but we are really really happy with her now!

Our girl is an indoor baby. I have a bunch of disabling medical conditions, and I am her ‘job’. She watches over me and sleeps with me. She will alert other family members when I’m having a medical emergency. This happened purely by accident, so we were pleasantly surprised by how attentive, alert, aware, and protective she is! I have my own personal nurse with me 24/7!♥️🥰

I pet sit and one of my favorite dogs was a Great Pyrenees. I loved her. They are very independent. When ever I called her, she would just look at me then turn away. About 3 minutes later she would come to me on her own time. She was very loving.

As an owner of a great Pyrenees and one Anatolian shepherd I think this is a perfect video describing the personality of the Pyrenees. They are naturally a little bit lazy during the day and roam perimeter and bark all night and do not usually like to make straight lines when you call them LOL. Great honest review with realistic expectations of the breed.

How do they compare to Anatolian Shepherds? My understanding is GP are good close guardian dogs for the animals and Anatolians/Kangals are more aggressive and range further.

Lgd's response to commands is usually I'LL TAKE THAT UNDER ADVISEMENT AND GET BACK TO YOU IN 24 HOURS! I've found that if it's an important issue a lot of times the next day they will do what you ask! It was their idea all along of course! They sort of resent what they see as being "pushed" around and being told what to do! If you ask them to do the same thing over and over again they will just quit.

I own 2, both 130lb males, these guys are big, lovable, and stay up all night barking at things real, or imagined. I live on a a farm and these guys have ended my coyote problem. I have a large flock of free range chickens, and they have almost eliminated loss to predators. They go as far as barking at buzzards, and Hawks.

We had a woodland property nd my Great Pyr walked a nightly patrol path around the perimeter (actually wearing a path.) I loved to watch her stop every so often, raise her head to listen, and sound the alarm with a thunderous woof - even if it was just the wind in the leaves. Thank goodness we didn't have neighbors. She slept a lot during the day. A sweet girl, and stunningly beautiful - but independent. My boss purchased a Great Pyr puppy for his autistic son for which his church raised money to put through a specialized thirty-thousand-dollar training program. I was skeptical to say the least as I did not believe this breed to have been a good choice. He finally got rid of the dog and replaced it with a Golden Retriever.

I have 3 pyres and none of them bark very often. They sleep through the night for the most part. I try and exercise them a lot. I read about people complaining about the barking. I'm not sure why mine don't bark too much.

*Great **dogy.training** lots of helpful instructions and ideas without being dictatorial. I like this writer's style a lot and we have found it more helpful than several of the other books that we got to help train our new puppy because of the detail he goes into.*

Great description of the Pyr personality/behavior. My Big Girl rarely barked inside our home, unless warning someone/something away. Which is why she became an inside dog! LOL. Loyal, gentle, patient with other animals and kids, protective but never agressive unless danger was imminent...which happened one time on her usual two-mile walk through the woods. At 122 pounds in her prime, she was a thing of beauty when she ran full out. Been gone 15 months and dearly missed, my sweet girl, Riley.

What a great video!! My husband and I adopted an adult Great Pyrenees through a Golden Retriever rescue, not only our first GP but our first dog of any kind since childhood (we're in our early 60's). Early on, we realized that this is *not* a Golden Retriever, haha! Not even close! We decided that we would work *with* the breed's characteristics, rather than trying to train them out of her - and it seems that is exactly the right approach. She barks at night? We thank her for guarding us. She is slow to obey a command? We understand that she is filtering our request through her Prime Directive, which is "guard the flock". She is intelligent, intuitive, and breathtakingly sensitive, and we use only positive training methods with her. All of this seems to relate back to your idea of having different expectations for this breed. I was so pleased to hear you say that - thank you so much for that affirmation, and for such a wonderful adventure with your pack members.

I have four Pyrenees, the oldest is my female she is about six, and you can train them to limit their barking. My puppy needs to go out at 2:00 in the morning to go potty, I kick them all outside and tell them no barking. And unless it's real serious I won't hear a peep out of them tell the sun comes up. It involved investigating their barking, and letting them know that that's okay everything's all right, or praising them if it was something that they needed to bark at, consistencie is the key, now it's just a matter of telling them no barking if they do. I fixed the wandering problem also, on walks without a leash if they got out too far in front of me when they were really young I would ditch them, hide. They turn around and say I'm gone and come running looking for me. Side note what's interesting is they put their noses to the air to find me, when I used to own goldens, they would put their nose to the ground to find me. Obviously the groundway is better because if I was downwind The Pyrenees took a long time to find me.

As a vet tech, I fell in love with this breed. One day, I will have one. Great protector of children. I have grandbabies who live with me. I won't have the barking problem because he/she will be in my bed every night. I also have a little bit of training experience. I know how to be the leader of the pack. I also have a 6 ft fenced huge yard and an inground pool he/she could play in.

They'll happily bark even when cuddling with you...:) It's just their nature. Leaf falls, cat walks by, deer enters yard (how do they know?) At any rate, you'll learn to live with the barking. And love it when someone approaches your property that you don't want there.

WOW: I love the whole dog aspect of this video but surprisingly left this video with a massive life and people lesson. "Managing expectations" is such a wonderful way to maintain empathy and avoid disappointment. Just like with dogs, when you understand that not everything or everyone has the same tools/ make up, then you don't expect the world from them.. therefore you can love and value them for what they truly are lol. I love how you say you're not a great pyr expert, then you proceed to give an excellent representation of the breed's facts. Their Agility is truly surprising for how big and lumbering they appear. I had mine playing with some friend's dogs, and he did like a backflip 360 type of move. All of us humans were like.... woah. They can be pretty difficult for anyone not familiar with dogs. And yes they will bark a lot in certain scenarios. I find that if I'm around to let mine know that things are okay, and I thank him for barking to alert me, he will stop until the next "evil doer" comes by

My neighbors had one when I was in high school. They kind of ignored him - so he'd jump the fence and try to come over to us. But he was very shy. I was the only one who could touch him. I always felt sorry for him. He was very nocturnal. He'd come over around 10 at night and guard our yard, and I'd take him home in the morning and he'd pass out on their porch.

Don't feel bad! Pyr's are naturally aloof with strangers and rarely allow touching from new people. Sometimes not even with people they know. They also look sad to some people. Or lazy. But they are alert even when sleeping. And are happy to just be watching out for you. That is their natural job. The breed is so old, and bred specifically for protection and nothing else, that they are born with this knowledge. So they don't need training, for the most part. So, coming to your place to guard you was a thing that made him happy. He didn't want nor need a lot of human attention. So you didn't need to feel sorry for him. Plus, since they were originally bred to work in large, open landscapes in the mountains, they do tend to wonder to neighboring yards when they live in smaller environments. Your neighbors pyr seemed to be doing exactly what pyr's like to do.....protect you!

It happened to me with a husky, I was ready after doing so much research and finding out their bad reputation, I got the calmest puppy ,the other ones were beating each other and she was just looking from faraway, she turned out to be the best well behaved husky ever, she is quiet ,non destructive, the only thing she has done is bolt if the door is open.

I have had Great Pyrenees and I agree everything you say! Love this breed and I hope that some day I'll be able to get one again. It is actually today exactly 5 years since my Pyrenees girl died. This video made me so happy. I so remember that wondering recall. What I noticed in that brush pile challenge was mostly that he actually stayed close to the smallest and weakest member of your flock, your daughter. And immediately after she started to go toward the brush pile, so did he. They just don't want to do any extra work and many times they do the calculation how they can protect the pack the best way possible. These dogs have different kind of wisdom in them, and yes, you can't compare them to some Shepherd dog breeds or retrievers. Great video! Thank you!

I adopted my Belle 3 months ago. She was kept in a large enclosure in Italy for 5 years. No walks , not much food. Yes, it has been very challenging because she weighs 90 pounds. She was afraid of stairs and several other things. She is now more confident and I have a small garden ( that she never really uses ) . However, I take her out every morning around 8 because she wakes me up and in the evening for a walk and socialization with everyone. Yes, she is stubborn but as she becomes more secure she has become more attentive and more thoughtful. I love her and yes , I have to vacuum every day but it's all worth it. Yes, she pees on everything except the restaurants ( she's really smart ) and listens and responds only to love. Aggression does not work with them at all. Trust is everything to them. I am a 73 year old woman ( had dogs all my life ) and her and I are becoming great friends.

I love my LGD team! My Anatolian (forked off of the Kangal) and my GP are awesome at their job around the farm, and are amazing pets. Recall is solid on my guys. Straight line, but often slow. These types of dogs tend to conserve energy, until it's needed to do their job. Loved watching your GP work with your daughter. Go back and watch again. Your GP blocked your daughter from the brush pile. He climbed up when he saw your daughter's interest in going there. These dogs, at first, seem lazy or whatever. As you spend time watching them, you learn their way of thinking and how they work. I have also learned that my LGDs will observe a few times, then do. Loved this video!!!! I have 2 pyrenees, they are brother and sister from the same litter. this video describes them perfectly. Lua (the girl) obeys a lot better than Biff (her brother) and she stays close while he likes to wander out far and zig-zag back when called in. they are both stubborn buttheads but they have protected my children for 6+ years now. Mine are incredibly smart and were very easy to train myself (just understand they are independent workers). Pyrenees are the most wonderful and well-rounded addition to any family and truly epitomize the phrase "man's best friend". We probably don't deserve them. Ever since my 2 pyr babies joined the family I've vowed to never be without a pyrenees in our lives and they receive all the same love as the children they protect.

Totally agree. My Big Boy at 154lbs Named Gryphon or Gryph for short is my best buddy. He protects my wife (she's a small gal at 4ft 9.5 inches is 15 years younger than I, 46,31) and hopefully my kids soon. there are a lot of pyrenees in my area used as livestock guardians, really needed since we have a big coyote population. every pyrenees i've ever met has been an absolute lovable sweetheart to people though, i think they're probably my favorite breed because of that combination. fierce when needed but so lovable.

They have mastered the doggie door. They are already guarding my backyard. I’m going to watch more videos and start walking them around the larger part of my yard. I have two fenced areas. I only have a few weeks to have a good impact these pups.

I love my Pyr! I didn't have the scoop on them beforehand, didn't know about their wandering, which is really just their patrol range. He was 10 weeks old and came with problems from a backyard breeder.. He had never been petted and hardly fed.. He didn't get affection to begin with,, but now will come and park himself by me and not move till he's received his due in love and petting. I have 40 acres around my house and thought that should suffice. He actually prefers the country to the north of my property to the village to the south, thank God. I have a yard that keeps my collie in, but Pyr just jumps the gate. However, he understands I get worried when I can't see him so he makes sure I know where he is, by barking if necessary. I'm not too proud to use reinforcements to get him in, and he stays in the house at night (coyotes in the north ranchlands). Another thing I'm so proud of, he's an intact male, but doesn't go searching for female companionship!

My great pyrenees dog is 6 months...same colour..maybe even equal colour, white and light brown. But he’s bigger than that one, much bigger! Here in Spain they are like polar bears, amazingly big. Mine is already 44kg with 6 months. Great breed! Expensive to feed, but lovely animals. The best hug you’ll ever recieve.

When I was “puppy shopping” here in Canada I went and saw a 10 month old great pyr and he was about 55kg. However the mama of the puppies I ended up getting was 3 years old and only about 35 kg. There’s a huge range here.

I had Newfs for years and now have my first Pyr, 15 months old. He is similarly gentle but much more athletic. He loves my grandkids, my elderly parents, cats, other dogs, and the neighbor's chickens....and always seems to accurately match his energy level to whichever people or animals he is around. My baby is turning 9 months on April 16th. He's an intact Pyrenees/Meramma mix. If I don't walk(and by walk I also mean jog/run) with him for 2-3 hours daily he loses his mind! He will excessively bark, chomp on my feet, try to hump me, eat my walls or bother the cat. Even if I spend a lot of time with him indoors he must have that time outside to do his patrolling! He's learned tricks pretty quickly but won't do them if he isn't in the mood to indulge his human. He also has accepted treat rewards and just dropped them on the ground. I love my little boy lol

Since I recently got a Great Pyrenees, I found myself searching for videos when I came across this guy. Now, we are very used to large breeds. We recently lost Mac who we rescued when he was 7 (and his dying bro was 11 who made it 6 mos with us) and he passed at 14. Mac was a 95lb Chow, shepherd, collie mix. Before him was Lenny who was a 135lb bernese/shepherd mix. He got cancer at 7, died at 8. Now we have Della who is our first puppy and female in 20 years. She is 8 mos, already 70lbs and she is/does everything a GP is supposed to be and does everything she is supposed to do. I really like this man's demeanor with his dogs. One GREAT point he makes, at the 7:00 mark is how they get just downright filthy and an hour later, they are clean as hell!! That, my friends, I LOVE!! ;) Anyway, you seem like a great trainer. I really like the way you’re with the dogs. I have a pyr, by accident, she was presented as a labrador look alike…….but she is a pyr. With hair……lots of…..with barking ……lots of barking…… I have never had a dog who is so imperturbable, she will never win an award for obedience. I have an 8 month old Great Pyrenees/ Newfie mix. He’s all Newfie when it comes to being a family dog, but he will NOT come back if he doesn’t have his e-Collar on. (We use the vibrate for recall) The great Pyr part of him is super smart, but he does things on his time. He also doesn’t bark very often. When he starts, I bring him inside and he calms right down. Overall, he’s an amazing pup.

My Pry’s shed like crazy even with getting combed weekly, sometimes more. Our family joke about grooming the three is that we “combed three puppies outta there!”. LOL

We just got our Pyrenees 2 days ago (9 weeks old). We have 4 little girls and a baby on the way and he has been the best companion for our kids. I know they are outside dogs but as far as bringing him inside during the day so he can get used to our girls and the energy they have he's very lax and calm❤️. He refuses to walk on our carpet and waits to go outside to go potty. He's been amazing! Quick to learn his do's and donts. Can't wait to learn more first hand from our pup😍

I love this video, Stonnie. I've always had labradors but adopted a Great Pyrenees girl a year or so ago. She's smart as a whip but a little stubborn. She loves her morning perimeter walks and barn checks and she's a quick learner if there's food involved. And she is absolutely the sweetest dog I've ever known.

Awesome video, thank you. I just got a GP two months ago, and it's been an amazing experience. The first week or two was rough at night as she wasn't used to us, as she was a 2.5 year old rescue, but now it's amazing. I have a fairly decent fenced-in backyard, so she has room to wander and hide and stuff, but not go far. I like your reference regarding maximizing guard and lowering liability as I have a 3-year-old daughter, and Bexar is super forgiving and whenever we have bonfires, she stays besides my daughter almost 100% of the time.

This breed was bred to think independently. They are one of the smartest breeds around. They are an ancient breed. Their bark is enormous! I had one who owned my heart. I plan on having another some day. I miss my Ruffie terribly. You sir, do the breed justice. I still hear my boy bark. ❤️❤️

I have four Pyrenees right now, Mom, Dad, and one pup from each of her litters. I dread the day when I lose one. These are the best dogs ever, they are very smart. I have trained mine not to bark, to sleep at night, haven't yet found a way to get them to stop shedding though. No biggie Just never put the vacuum cleaner away.

Mine barks at strangers walking by but if you tell him to be quiet he shuts up real quick. He doesn’t trust strangers very well until we are friendly towards them. He’s super mellow but will play keep away in the evening. They’re not a dumb breed, just independent.

This video is invaluable to me. You hit the nail on the head. A 'mostly' Pyrenees (some Lab) chose me/my yard after wandering the town for days. I posted to many sites and no calls were made to animal control after 2 weeks. I tried to find a farm, but so far, no luck. I have a big backyard so I concluded that this dog was somehow meant for me. You have explained their behavior so concisely. I have had Shepherds, Belgian Malenois', and Labs and this dog is so different. I've been watching your vids on 'prey drive' b/c mine seems to have a strong one for dogs and squirrels. It takes a 3 mile walk to tire her out, but she, so far and thankfully, sleeps through the night without barking. She howls in the early morning, especially when she hears other dogs barking. But you confirmed how she patrols our walking route and seems to think that's her territory, too. I'm glad you explained the 'recall' b/c I intuitively knew not to take her off her harness when not in our backyard. She was 15lbs underweight when she chose my house/yard so it was most likely due to hunger/starvation that made her settle into my home.

Adopted a GP Newfie cross puppy from a shelter at 8 weeks. Yesterday she turned 1! Of the entire litter my girl was left behind to the shelter because she was the runt. I don't have a problem with that because if someone needed a true Pyr to guard livestock then my girl would not have performed and could have gotten injured so its better they left her to find a loving home. Given that she is all Pyr personality yet looks just like my Landseer Newfie. TOTALLY different personality from a Newfoundland, yet is equally as sweet and family oriented. Daisy, my PYR mix is independent, digs, roams the large yard to 'guard', barks at night at nothing, sheds sheds sheds and obeys commands when she feels like it - lol. Incredibly wonderful sweet dog. Knowing breeds is so important. Your video will help many closing the right breed for their families.

My great pyr just turned sideways and studiously ignored the attacker when small dogs would attack her. She looked off into space while the dogs flung themselves against her, fruitlessly.fruitless.. The little dogs would just give up, bewildered. It eas amazing.

I had a 120 lb female for a little more than 10 years. I named her Roxanne and she was the most beautiful dog I ever saw. The only color on her was her brown eyelashes. Yes, barking is a bit of a problem. I either heard or read that this was considered a valuable trait in dogs that were off with the flock, as it would reassure the family that he was still on the job. I didn't have much problems at night, but leaving them unattended in the yard was a challenge. I sure loved that dog, though!

Raised GP for 20 years and have never had any problem training them. I have trained dogs since I was a kid because my family raised Collies. GP do not need a lot of space at all. They can be trained to stop barking on command. If trained from 8 weeks old they will follow commands easily. At one point we had 15 at one time and all were trained. They are very protective of their property and family they will only bite when forced to protect. Very gentle and sweet. They are nocturnal and will walk the property to protect. As far as their coat they are double coated and their coats are easy to maintain if you brush them a few times a week. They love kids and will guard them gently. Our GP were used to wake my daughter up if she stopped breathing in her sleep so she always shared her bed with a GP. My daughter’s male GP Destiny was 130lb which is big for the breed he slept with her from 10 weeks old.

I have 4 Pyrenees Pitbull cross 8 months old pups.Every one is different! My females have great recall the males come on their own terms.True about the barking at night! It makes a huge difference if I take them out and let them play before bed.I have a lot of patience and take all the little victories along the way ! Every day is training day ! My Great Pyrenees is a mixture of boxer/Pyrenees. He is mostly Pyrenees he’s a little bit smaller only about 100lbs. I live in an apartment complex soon to be a home owner hopefully. He doesn’t bark that often unless someone is at our door but his bark sounds vicious. We walk him about 1-2 miles a day. He’s great with other dogs and with people. He’s very friendly. After walking 1-2 miles a day he basically hangs out and sleeps all day. He’s not nocturnal he sleeps all night. I would recommend them as a house dog as well. Especially if you want a good guard dog that’s independent and that is laid back.

This video is spot on. We've had a male Pyrenees for nearly 3 years and he is exactly as the video describes. He is WONDERFUL with our kids, our other dog, and even our cat. He likes to do things at his own pace, but is very obedient otherwise. He enjoys being pet, but is not extremely affectionate. Yes Pyrenees like to bark and jump fences (especially at rabbits and squirrels), but we have a collar that we can 'beep' remotely and this helps reset his focus and limit his impulsiveness. He is very good with neighborhood dogs and good on walks, but he will pee every 10 feet if you let him. He is a great dog in public, and doesn't mind people frequently wanting to come pet him. Yes he sheds a lot, but brushing him daily helps. In closing, if you want a great and somewhat independent family dog and are willing to put in the effort to show him YOU are in charge, then they make excellent companions. Our family adores ours.

I had that problem when we got 2 Pyrs to protect the sheep and goats. I went to the neighbor ladies and explained that I was sorry about the dogs barking, but they were the only thing keeping the coyotes from eating our little baby lambies and goaties...and I put it about like that. "Lambies"!!! It worked, and they did end my coyote problem. You do want to let them know you are around though if you got o check on the herd at night. They don't have a sense of humor about any kind of animal approaching the flock at night- including people.

When we let her out to do her "business", she usually starts barking as she crosses the threshold or as leaving the porch, just to let everyone know she's on duty. She is 11, and a love.

Picked up an Anatolian Shepherd/Blue Heeler puppy a couple of months ago. Awesome mix, slow to recall compared to my Jack Russell but he just hangs out and is cool. Great with the kids and barely barks at all. Perfectly suited to my region, Central WA.

Your brush pile reminded me of training ours to go up our narrow winding stairs to a loft in our log cabin. The Pyr was hesitant to try it, she slid down the first fours steps backwards on her first try - very well varnished steps - large Pyr paws - pretty humorous! So I put her leash on her and tried - she was even more hesitant. Then, our 12 year old Flat coated retriever (only 55 lbs, much smaller paws) pushed past us both as if to say "here's how it's done...." and waited at the top of the steps. The Pyr clambered on up after her. They are very smart to want to know the "lay" of the obstacle. Today? She clambers up in a flash if I bring out the ear cleaning supplies :) Since the steps are barely 3 feet wide, you don't go up in front of her, you give her all the room she needs to go up or down. But she's very sure footed when she does, without looking at the steps. (And, she will push through any obstacle if she thinks she needs to, not much will prevent her from going after food, something she thinks she needs to scare off....:) Very tenacious when she thinks she needs to be.) As you said, when we go out for a break (she's mostly indoors due to a lack of fence...) she sniffs the air and listens. You can tell when something might be near, when we first moved here she was on high alert. I walked her all over our property (and she's wandered it a bit on her own, her choice not mine...:) ) and after a few weeks of learning the lay of the land, she calmed enough to rest on the deck while I had coffee. Until the neighbor dog wanted to come visit. He learned otherwise, her welcoming bark drives off most dogs and people. She's not aggressive to other dogs, we don't want her to be. We were quite proud the evening we were enjoying the night air on the deck and two largish dogs ran onto our property, she "greeted" them and encouraged them to continue on, and returned to us properly. It was her first off leash encounter with other dogs, we're pretty happy with her performance.

I have a 10 month old Pyr/Boxer cross. Already he is the best dog I've ever had. I'm training him to be a service dog for myself. He takes training with me to be his job, which it is. He truly seems to enjoy working with me and takes his job seriously. More than that, though, he wants to guard. He is extremely aware of his surroundings taking in everything from all directions. And he is very protective of me. He's not aggressive, but his stance alone is enough to convince strangers, especially men, that they don't want to engage with him or come too close to me. I don't discourage him from this. I do ask that he not growl at someone who I tell him is okay. But he can stare and posture to his heart's content. And he places himself between me and any perceived threat. My big boy is actually very obedient. But I think that's because he considers this to be part of his job. And he takes working very seriously. I can say though that once he reached adolescence being off leash was no longer an option for him considering we live in town. He is neutered now, but my guess is that he would still go check out the neighborhood if I let him off. Honestly, adopting this handsome boy was one of the best decisions of my life. ❤

Great video. I am about to move onto 20 acres in the mountains of Idaho. I have 2 Australian Shepherds, which are amazing, but I am looking for a large dog to protect my wife, smaller dogs, chickens and goats we are gonna keep. The more research I do, the more I think the great Pyrenees is the dog I am looking for. Honestly, they seem like super sized Aussies. Which is 100% okay with me. My Aussies are great dogs.

Hi there, First off, I want to say that my husband and I found your review thoroughly informative. We have owned large breeds before and are considering a Pyr. Upon my research, I am still left with questions that maybe you and the “Pyr community” could help us with before we make our final decision. 1. Food. We have an 8 year old female Siberian Husky/American Pit named Sadie that we want to find a companion for. We feed her Purina Sensitive Skin Lamb/Rice. How does this fair for this breed considering the digestive systems they have? Would Hills be more of an appropriate option or perhaps Purina Pro Plan? What about as a pup? Any suggestions? What foods did you guys feed your GP as a pup and then as an adult? 2. Training. Is it advisable to spend hundreds of dollars on obedience training versus DIY? What route did you take? In my experience, I trained all my pups, however, we are talking about a different breed here. The stubbornness is something I ran into a lot with my dogs so patience and positive reinforcement is key! 3. Grooming. My Sadie goes to the vet faithfully. Considering this dog, (His name would be Cooper) sheds ALOT, I plan to brush him myself daily, at the latest once per week for 30 minutes and take him for nail training monthly. Bathing is something I am curious to hear your thoughts on. Unless Cooper is filthy, every two months should be enough. Correct me if I am wrong “Pyr Community”…. 4. Exercise. I have a fenced in yard but would still take Cooper on two 45 minute walks daily. Hopefully, this is enough…. 5. Barking. The infamous barking….how do you effectively minimize it? I’m sure yelling at this intelligent breed to shut up would not be smart or supportive to their emotional well-being. After all, they have super sonic hearing so would you offer any tips or strategies? I sincerely appreciate everyone who took the time to read this post. I need a big, sweet, therapy dog in my life that I can enjoy for many years to come. I feel this breed matches my characteristics to a T, “big, sweet, stubborn, loyal, and intelligent”, just like a Capricorn. Anyways, I hope to hear from you and I appreciate you dearly!
