Eyo! This is a very late watcher comment here. I have been self-learning piano for the last four months with the help of a very dear friend of mine. I found your channel maybe a week ago and I am looking at all the beginner-level videos you put over here on KZbin. Thank you so much for sharing your insight and experience with beginners. Personally, I am interested in playing classical pieces. But I just don't have much idea about how to structure my learning according to the difficulties of the pieces and the existing grading levels. It will definitely be helpful to know the Henle system once I reach sufficient proficiency. Until then, I will probably try to follow ABRSM's grading. A very picky side note: seeing umlaut on the word "Urtext" at 1:51 stabbed me right in my heart. It is just a tiny miny error that doesn't take anything from the quality of the video though, it is just that the wrong umlaut always hurts an eye of a German speaker.

What a timely video. I just received The Well Tempered Clavier, Teil 1, since I wanted the Old Testament as a collection piece. And it is the Henle edition. Very good quality. I've been playing for over a year, but I still am in pre-Preparatory stage. I'm not yet a beginner, even though I can do some intermediate technical skills. I don't hear music in my head, which might be Aural Aphantasia. This is a major handicap for someone to be a musician. I've obercome bigger handicaps, so I'll keep playing at my level. IDNK about the Henle rating, but my teacher wants me to start playing some pieces. I'll use the Henle catalog, and try and find Baroque music to play. I like other styles, but I believe if you can play Baroque, or Bach Chorales, then other music becomes easier.

I only as of now recently started using the G. Henle editions. I never really knew about G. Henle until I got into college and out of curiosity I looked at some of the old pieces I’ve played and looked them up on the Henle grading scale, they came out to the level 6 and 7. I’d say I’m around that range comfortably.

Although I might not have been the first one to mention it, I believe I left a comment about the Henle system on the "unusual time signatures" video about 5 months ago, which you did reply to. Again it may well be that someone had commented about it prior to that, and I would encourage anyone to reply to this comment if they were the first to bring up Henle, as I don't want to wrongly take credit for it.

I'm a big fan of the Henle system and their books. They are helping me get back into regular practice. Unfortunately, I think they did away with the half ratings, at least on their website. While they are a bit more expensive, the quality of the books makes it totally worth the extra few dollars.
@WowFan9916 жыл бұрын

One thing i noticed is that Henle Concerto ratings are, IMO way off from the solo piece rankings. Like they rank pieces like the Grieg concerto and Beethoven's 5th concerto (both very hard pieces) at the same level as a piece like Moonlight sonata (which is for sure much easier than most concertos). They also tend to vastly under score most of Bach's harder WTC fugues and Schubert's sonatas (according to them his famous D960 is as easy as Liebestram :P). Other thank that it's a really solid ranking system and it helps to cross reference other rankings to make sure you know the difficulty of a piece.
@PianotvNet7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this bit of insight!
@SpaghettiToaster7 жыл бұрын
Why would the concerto be so much harder? The sonata is very difficult. It's shorter, but unlike the concerto, you're playing piano for the entire duration with no break. You don't have to keep time with an orchestra, but you also don't have one to back you up or hide some of your mistakes. You are solely responsible for the interpretation of the piece. I think the assessment is very fair and if I were to choose, I'd probably feel more comfortable performing the concerto than the sonata. The Schubert is of course much longer, but technically, I would say it's easier than the Liebestraum. The difficulty is of course in the interpretation, but that's way more subjective and harder to rate.
@tunafishmaki7 жыл бұрын
moonlight is in no way 'very difficult'. Op 31 no 3 or op 22 is already alot harder. the first two movements of moonlight are slow and their arent any tricky articulation or anything in there. if you've listened to beethoven's concertos, you would know that even with orchestra, the solo part is very clean and bare so its easy to tell when you've screwed up. for very difficult just look at the rachmaninoff sonatas, liszt dante, liszt bellini norma, gaspard de la nuit ... ofc im probably just blowing things out of proportion but i really dont under stnad how the moonlight would be more uncomfortable to preform.
@KiranKumar-bs3re7 жыл бұрын
even excluding all the difficulties of coordinating with an entire orchestra, the music itself for Beethoven 5 is harder- there are descending thirds, fast octaves, 5/1-4/2 tremelos (at least i think it's called that) gigantic jumps, and huge runs where the orchestra stops playing and you're completely exposed (like during the first minute of the piece). there are runs in the third movement of moonlight sonata but a lot of them are built around triads and there are way more of them in the concerto. i think you should look at the concerto music just to see- it's way harder to stay in tempo and make it sound good. for the Schubert you're probably right that the hardest part Liebestraum is harder than the hardest part in the sonata but I think the length itself of the piece (and stamina required) should be involved in the rating too
@icst47867 жыл бұрын
Kiran Kumar Another thing is that many of the pieces rank difficulty 9 are nowhere near the same level of difficulty. For example, Liszt's Transcendental etude no. 10 and Mazeppa are both 9's, but they are worlds appart in technicality.

It is not 'Ürtext' but 'Urtext' (The 'U' is pronounced like 'you' without the 'y' in the beginning). The prefix 'Ur' means 'primeval', so something which happened a long time ago. Here it means that it is the original text. This prefix is used a lot in the German language. (For instance "great-great-grandparents" are "Ururgrosseltern" in German or "primeval times" is "Urzeit")

In a 400-year span, there must be a few hundred thousand pieces composed if you count every movement of a piece with 2 or more as different levels of difficulty.There are all sorts of arrangements for piano from orchestral pieces or originally for other instruments. Since these are not the original, don't think there is a grade level assigned for the individual pieces. The common "Minuet in G" from the Anna Notebook may be rated as level 3 for piano. Know somebody who took her Gr.1 RCM for violin playing this piece (just the top line melody, no bass).

You cannot pour enough of your soul into Chopin. Listen to Idil Biret play Chopin's Nocturne, esp. the F# one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqbdhHeFgLajb7sm50s I'm not saying you can't play it, but emotion comes first with Chopin. An ability to almost forget about rhythm, and just play straight from within you. You have to treat his music with a lot of respect and do it justice. By all means though, play Chopin.

so, If I understood, the Henle system begins with a more or less grade 2 of the RCM (sometimes 3) and separates the RCM grade 10 into 2 or pheraps 3 different levels (7/8, 8, 9).
@flicfan4164 жыл бұрын
No, the Henle system transcends the RCM grade 10 significantly. There is hardly anything on the Grade 10 list that goes above a 7 , and a lot of the RCM grade 10 repertoire falls at or even below a Henle level 5. The Henle system is a reference for professional-level pianists, is what I'm saying.

Hey Nice explanation! What would u say how long would it take a complete beginner to learn the raindrop prelude ? I just love the piece
@caragibbons85413 жыл бұрын
Hi Neal, In order to do this piece justice, I would say it would take most people several years of dedicated playing before attempting it. It’s Grade 9 on the RCM syllabus. I’m learning it now and it’s going to take me 3 months at minimum. I have my grade 8 RCM but then didn’t play for many years so I’m rusty. This is a challenge piece for me. There are some modulations that I think I would find confusing without having taken music theory. It’s definitely not the most technical piece in the grade 9 repertoire, but it requires significant musicality to make those sometimes simple notes sound so magical. In the C#minor portion there are some points where you are doing octave 8th note “raindrops” in the right hand that are played relatively quietly while playing longer solid notes more loudly with the middle fingers. I just started this part. It’s very hard for my out of practice but experienced fingers. Can’t imagine a beginner playing it well at all.

Henle matches up pretty well with RCM/ABRSM/TCL, etc but tops out at about Henle 6 or 7. Typically you can get to ARCT at Henle 6 or 7, which is suppose to represent "Associate" diploma, which is equivalent to 2 years of University level performance. Level 10 RCM is typically considered university entrance to many top Canadian university programs. Note that ARCT in RCM is not very granular above Henle 6. For example, say Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata(Henle 7) and Appasionata (Henle 8-9) are both ARCT but in reality, the Appasionata is MUCH more difficult requires an entire different level of stamina, and typically is rated a Masters degree level whereas Moonlight 3rd movement (while still not easy) is a typical 1st year university performance teaching case. Same with say Chopin's Ballade 4 or Winterwind which is both ARCT, but at an entire level of difficulty above some lesser pieces that will fulfill ARCT requirement. Henle is useful in breaking down these intricacies and allows you to select accordingly when preparing for an audition. Typically, anything 7 or above requires significant stamina with high tempo passages, have some ridiculous chords or some complications that's very difficult to overcome for amateurs.
@marco119w77 жыл бұрын
This is why I sometimes wish that ARCT would've been off divided into multiple levels, because (imo) RCM does a terrible job categorizing higher difficulty pieces, and often times there are some extremely difficult pieces (that are in reasonable length of exam performance) that are just completely left out of the system. Not that getting every single piece of musical repertoire in existence should be mandatory, but if they were to increase the levels of difficulty in a more linear fashion rather than an exponential rate, it would be easier for the students to learn a wider variety of repertoire. One thing that still bugs me to this day two years after I finished ARCT is the placement of Fur Elise. It was considered an advanced intermediate piece (RCM 7), but almost everyone I know who plays piano managed to play it at RCM 5 or below (me being able to play it at RCM 3).

That was just the case with Beethovens Waldstein Sonata, it is with Rachmaninovs prelude in cis minor and it will with Rachmaninovs "Italian Polka".
