ABOUT US
We are Bill and Rebecca and this is Birch Moon Farm. A simple living homestead/farmstead where we try to practice a simply sustainable lifestyle. In 2015 we purchased 5+ acres in the Vermont hills and for the first 18 months lived in a 250 sq ft RV, while we built our own house (with lots of help from amazing friends and family), 3 sheds, a driveway, water well, septic, 2 chicken coops.
So what made us do all this in our late 40's early 50's? Well, in 2013 Rebecca was diagnosed with breast cancer and mostly everything that goes with that type of diagnosis. And this all happened 6 months after our wedding. So after about 10 months of treatments, a couple of surgeries, chemo and radiation, we had had enough. We no longer subscribed to what people call the "American Dream". And we didn't want to wait until we were in our late 60's to live our dream. So we sold or gave away everything we owned, and took all our assets and started to live our dream where we would try to be as self sufficient as possible. Do we always succeed? Nope! But we try! And in the end, isn't that all that matters?
Birch Moon Farm is now home to 2 humans, 2 cats, one dog and lots of silkie chickens! Follow along with us while we build our homestead one project at a time.

Thank you for the wealth of info!! I was gifted silkies for Mother's day 10 days ago. Yes, I was raised on a farm but we didn't have these lil precious silkies. I'd love to eventually consider small scale breeding them as locally folks want them. So, let me introduce my flock of 10 days. I have a black Rooster Ricky "Stanley" Very light crow but he's timid. Also 2 white ladies (Ethel & Lucy) that were laying but when gifted to me, now aren't (only had for 10 days). And they are dirty not white like they are supposed to be (how do I clean them) they also are skidish! 😏 but I also have smaller ones. 1 solid black and tall as the lil roo is Tina Turner. Then a step down smaller is the silver/blue Cindy Lauper. Then even smaller is solid black with a white line speckle necklace colar, Joan Jett. Then we have the smallest of all, silver blue & black, Stevie Nicks! I had another like her, Pat Benetar but she passed on day 8 😥 right after a cold snap we had in NC. Then the only one laying is a black with white spots Bardrock and her name is Janet Jackson (she's a lil bigger than the silkies and used to being free range and don't like being cooped up at all!) The silkie Roo is even trying to do his thing with her. She's 1 year old and skidish as well. But she's a faithful layer minus day one. *Notice a pattern here in names 80s hairband ladies names. They are precious and I want to cuddle them, luv on em but none will come to me except Stevie Nicks and she's iffy. I have a 8x5' coop with a 8x4' run and additional 8x6' foot dog lot run all covered. I can't get the little ones up in it as they huddle in corner of the bottom and I can't get to them to put them up and when I do, they come down the ramp! I hung a towel to block the wind in that corner. Do I need to do something on inside of coup on the bottom for them? Do I need a laying bin just for them low down. I've got so many questions and so many opinions are given but you've had these lil preciousnesses for 3 years you said & I think your knowledge is credible with experience. Please feel free to private message me if you find time. You can even call as I'd prefer that. Love love your babies. Thanks for sharing and God bless you for your time. Love & prayers

Good Morning from Kingsland, Georgia! Your video was sooo helpful! This morning I'm getting my first ever chicken coop for free (and I just turned 60 last month! 😂) and I can't wait!!! 🤗 I too was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013. I hope we can become friends from afar! I'm really excited to get started. I've been told by the gentleman whose giving me the coop that a guy he works with has "Banyons and Silkies" for sale so that's how I found your video to learn more about Silkies. 😊

I have the most beautiful little sizzle hen and I just worship her. My chickadees live full time in my two car garage because I'm so worried about predators (we have coyotes and foxes very close). I don't know what I would do if I lost one. They have a sand bath and toys and they roost in a kid's playhouse. She is definitely my favorite chicken. She follows me around the house, she's always at my feet and she comes when called. She's also a little brat lol

Thanks for all the great information! This is my first year for silkies and it has been a bit of a learning curve. I had to build a new ramp so that they could go up into the coop and it took 3 weeks to teach them to coop up at night, instead of just piling up in a corner. Beautiful and sweet birds but not very smart! I just love them!!

Actually, they are not dumb. I have several that know their names and one came when called by 8 weeks, (I'd be amazed if a puppy was doing that!) They are slower to mature and sleep like that because when young it's comforting. They don't like heights or high nest boxes. They are ground birds. Secure the coop so it accommodates the Silkies or get a different breed. The novelty of how they look shouldn't override their special qualities.

Good video. I confess, I am obsessed with Silkies. I hatched them on my counter and now I have 15ish. They get along well, have best friends and are so cuddly sweet. Hatchery silkies are not the way to go if you want pet or show quality. They are extra broody, and cranky! Pets come from parent birds that have been spoiled and not left in the cold...all chickens want some heat in the winter, in my opinion. If you want a production bird try a different bantam.

I first got 2 silkie chicks(light gray and dark gray)…both boys. Got 4 more (2 splash, 2 white)…only one girl! 😂 what’s funny is I didn’t know what gender they were until we got a rainstorm so I brought the silkies in. Out of the shadow of my full size roosters, they started crowing immediately!! Once it was dry I put them back outside…no more silkie crowing. 😂

So nice of you, and sorry to hear that! There could actually be quite a few things that can effect egg production. There are really great links in this video's description that can help you determine what is going on. There are also links to silkie specific Facebook Pages, one of them being Silkie Chicken World with members worldwide and they are always willing to help. Especially since you are in India. But let me steer you in the right direction. First things: Add more light during early morning into early night. Add more nutritional treats once to twice a week (we use black sunflower seeds) to your already good feed. Health: inspect for lice/mites and treat if necessary. If you dont already, provide additional vitamins to your monthly routine. We use Rooster Booster and NutriDrench. Not sure what is available in your area, but if you can find similar items this can help. I hope that helps!

I know that silkys are broody and they are very cute, but I still prefer my little white sultan pullet. I know she's a non setter, but Sophia is the sweetest little couch potato you ever did meet and she is a perfect companion bird for me and my severely cross beaked Americana. The other thing is that she is not even as fast as a silky, but I love the way she moves. I suspect someone bred a IAM cremani with a sultan and had a sporatic mutation to get primarily down feathers.

Glad it was helpful! So nice to hear that you are getting silkies! Silkies have the same needs as other chickens. Since they are smaller, keep roosts and ramps on the shorter side. Keep them dry and out of direct cold winds. Fresh feed and water should be provided to them daily.

@@birchmoonfarm101 thanks so much for the reply! We bought home 3 8month old Silkie hens and a lovely Silkie rooster yesterday. They have lovely fresh wood shaving bedding, fresh food and water every day and seem to be enjoying lots of space in the garden and one of them particularly enjoys cuddles with my son. Today i got them some grit and I built a perch for them to roost on in their coop and a better ramp to get up to it. In their previous home they didn’t have a perch or a ramp so they are struggling a bit with it and don’t seem to be taking themselves into the coop at night yet. They make cakes taste better too. We have our 2 silkie hens in a mini coop (we got from Bunnings Warehouse) they live inside in our sun room as we live near a forest and there are too many spiders and snakes to live outside. They wonder around the house if they own the place. As we are in Brisbane Australia and it is summer here now and very hot. The girls keep cool with ice water and frozen berries (as well as all their other food) I also give them ice bricks to sit on of a night to keep cool. They are very loving and loved to be on your lap to be patted. They also love a cool bath and love the hair dryer on low. We love our girls ❤️ Keep safe in these hard times. Love Kas 🌈🐨💕🇦🇺

Is it possible to keep only hens without a rooster? We live in a semi-rural environment, but we do have one neighbor fairly close by, and I worry about too much noise and being the hated resident. If not, are they like other birds where you can entertain them with stuff, and they are quieter? If so, what entertainment do you suggest?

Yes, you only need a rooster if you want to hatch chicks 🐣 they will always make noise 😊 but aren’t super loud. We lived in town and one of our neighbors who’s backyard joined ours had 5-6 chickens and I didn’t know until we had been there for 5 years 🤣🤣🤣

We have our coop up and I have a huge fenced in yard but my baby still stays inside at night. I am ready to get my harem and I would like to add a silkie. My husband is worried that our big girl will be jealous and not get along with other chickens. Do silkies do well in a mixed group? I had planned on getting 2 more Rhodes and a silkie. Or 1 moreRhode and 2 silkies. I am only planning on 4. I think my Chicky Baby will be happy with friends. What do you think?

Hi Saline, I am excited for you guys! Chickens are a wonderful creatures. Yes, silkies get along with standard size girls as long as one of the two things happen. They grow up together as chicks, or you get at least 3 silkies to integrate into your flock. Chickens are much happier when they are part of a flock. If you introduce slowly once the silkie chicks are grown, they should do well together.

From experience is just like dogs bigger chickens will pick on smaller chickens silkies, are a bantam breed, or basically like a miniature Doberman and they will get picked on. They are a very very docile breed and they won’t even defend themselves. Sadly my silky hen actually picks on the silky rooster because she’s bigger. The dozen Highlander hens that I have they have never seen a rooster beat up the silky rooster. To say the least, they are at the bottom of the pecking order of almost all the chicken breeds, but they are some of the best mamas. I’d suggest different chickens then Rhode Island reds. If you have a rooster, you will find out what I’m talking about. They will run you out of your own yard unless you handle them every single day as a baby. Jersey giants are even more friendly than reds. And I am currently breeding CrestedPolish breeds. Hoping to get my silver laced CrestedPolish rooster to fertilize my showgirl silky eggs. They would make some beautiful babies with really big hair. 😂😊

I had a couple of white silkies but a dog got inside my chicken coop and kill the rooster, now my hen is by her self. Can I get a new rooster for her or getting her a new rooster will be dangerous for her? because now that she is by her self other rooster are picking on her head.... of course I already have her in a different place so she is not in danger.

Im so sorry for the loss of your baby! Separating her was very good to do. Can she see the other chickens? If you can do that, that is best, but if not, place a mirror in her pen with her and try to find another rooster, which should be easy since everybody tries to rehome their roosters. Try to find a reputable breeder because they are careful about diseases. Quarantine him then slowly introduce and they should be fine.

@@birchmoonfarm101I don't know who pecked her, if it was the other rooster or the chickens! She is currently inside my house 😁. Her rooster was so protective and didn't allowed any of the others get closer to her. I will see if the same person who sold me them have any roosters. Thank you so much for replying back. Now I'm more confident to get her a new partner.

Hi, this is a safe place to ask questions 🙂 Silkies lay about 100 eggs a year so you might want at least 2, so they dont get lonely, and to have a fresh supply of eggs for one person.

This is what I have done in the past. I take long scissors and place it along their head by their eyes. Do not put the pointy end anywhere near their eyes. Holding firmly in a towel, trim tiny little bits off at a time. I also try to cut at an angle by tilting the top edge of the scissors away from the head a little. You can try that or use blue painters tape or the fabric tape in the first aid section of the store and make a pony tail at the top of her head. Mine look really funny but their poof is out of their eyes. LOL They look at me now as if they have never seen me before. LOL I have a video coming out soon where I show their little funny hair dos.
