I really like TPO systems. As a home inspector in FL I see it on a lot of mobile homes and the owners love it. I also get scrap pieces from a roofing buddy of mine and I use it for roofing my bee hives

in 1979 the braas system everything was hand welded area and details, back pain, knees red raw, the solvent weld was 3 times, we used to do the upside down roofing system a lot quicker than the flex disc fix

For some reason , there are always people that think they can do it better , I bet you any money , most of the haters here can't stand on a roof for 8 hours, they don't even know how is like to be on your knees heat welding the single ply membrane ,they don't know how the white single ply membrane burns your face and bothers your eyes , as usual brainless people , write , comment ,nonsense stuff. you guys did a very good job, I'm glad you didn't show this people how to actually do it , it's not worth your time , as long as the roof don't have a leak in the next 10 years , you are a good roofer!! most of the bad roofers have a leak on the first fucking rain and they still brag about knowing what they're doing . I reply with facts. I have been doing single ply roof for 30 years. Started with Hypalon (Burkline), Trocal, JPstevens, Bondcoat, Firestone EPDM, Carlisle EPDM. Got certified for Firestone in "86 back when ya had to get certified to install. I have been offered jobs with Johns Manvill and Sarnifil to be an inspector. We installed Carlisle back in the day when you earned points for perfect roofs and could use the points to buy things from their catalog. So putting on a punch free roof is how I was taught 30 years ago. So when I said there were things done wrong they were. If i inspected this roof they would have been back fixing more then a few things. As for fall protection 6 foot up 6 foot in. PERIOD. 25k fine from osha dont feel good in the bank. Last leak I had was 5 years ago and it was trade damage. My name is on here if ya dont believe me check with any of the big Manufacturers Carlisle, JM, Sarnifil Firestone here in southern CA. Ill let them tell ya.

OSHA fines companies hundreds of thousands of dollars daily for employees doing things the boss doesn't even know about. Notice they fine the employer, who knows nothing about it, not the man who actually did the alleged unsafe act.

You think a roofer gives a shit how quickly he does a job he gets paid by the hour on? No. Do you think he cares that a harness slows him down? We use 80mil for the deck and 60mil for flashing only and unsupported for detail.

im thinking about taking a job doing this. Not fond of heights .Ive had to deal with them as ive been a carpernter for years but not a fan. like it gave me anxiety watching ur guy with the heat roller on the edge. couple questions though i was always you had to be tied off that close. but then where ? sometimes theres nothing to tie too. also when you installed the seam on the edge , why wouldnt you use fasteners? it seems like that would be the ideal place, protecting from wind etc?

any solid mid range generator (4000+ wats) will run 2 leister guns fine. Usually for our guns we are able to find on site power but have a 12000 watt honda generator we use for our robot welder and as needed for the hand welders

Torch is the king of roofs 3 ply torch. Single ply can easy put a hole even with a nail head.

Bitumen is 1/2 thickness is a beast of roofing 3 ply torch, easy can last 30 years with maintenance. Compared with 40 mil, 60 mil , 80 mil TPO.

Hey! TPO Comes in other colors such as gray and tan. There are other custom color membranes available as well. Getting the product in original color that you desire is always preferable to painting after the fact :)

But what about in climates you leave windows open all year round like puetro rico. No ac as I enjoy hot weather . Like I need no insulation. Recommended TPO . Windows act like a cooling system. As me likes it at 85 to 90 degrees. Asking them how to install without the insulation as same temperature as outside. For concrete.

What about possible dry rot that needs to be repaired? Especially if structural integrity is comprised like beams and purlins? Your roofs only gonna be only as sound as the roof deck under it. 🤷‍♂️

You make a great point, not all roofs can have a recover done. This particular roof had a sound deck, did not have major water intrusion issues. This allowed a recover to be done and save the building owner lots of money and get his tenants a waterproof covering. You are correct though in a lot of cases a full removal is the only way to go.

Can you use this product on a corrugated metal roof?

Yes you can, you would install a special insulation first which is ordered specially for each metal roof and fits into the standing seams, the TPO or PVC then gets installed on top, we have done several like this

Depends on the thickness of the metal but generally yes depending on your proximity to high wind zones and the pitch of your roof. You may need "special" fasteners as well. Call a reputable commercial roofer, they’ll give you a proposal and spell out your options.

Yes they make wider plates that are designed to hold the insulation down :)! In some other systems insulation can be foam adhered down as well.

Best way is to install the material tight in the first place. Mechanically fastened systems are designed to have a bit of give in between so that the system can expand and contract, if it is to tight then the welds can be torn in that process. If there are wrinkles beyond normal measures, they can be cut and then the area cleaned and patched, this can be unsightly though and add extra points of potential water intrusion.

Gravel was added only to hold the original Membrane down It was only a part of the ballasted membrane system What this video is showing is the installation of TPO OVER that system , because the former system had failed And of course they remove the rock before installing the TPO over the top

Since this video we no use reinforced wrap on our curbs with non reinforced detail on the corners, with that being said the vast majority of roofs we did like this are under 10 year warranty and do not leak or experience problems

The insulation is fastened to the wood deck and the single ply is fastened to the deck on top with screws every foot on center.

Depending on the product, Firestone TPO can be fully adhered using TPO Adhesive leaving a seam to be welded down, or mechanically fastened using screws and plates every foot.

Ours was $21,000 USDfor 6500 sq feet over the existing roof. They swept off the gravel, installed insulation, and installed the TPO on top. No AC units and no parapets. 5 estimates and that was the lowest price. Everyone else was at $28-$43k

I was not hating Eric Garcia. Also you should really do more research before you make yourself look even more foolish. Yes OSHA is gov but they have jurisdiction over every square inch of this country. If your a General Contractor , Roofing Contractor or any other construction trade or a manufacturer or distributor af all goods and services in this country and operate as a Corporation , Incorporated , LLC and even special conditions as Sole Proprietor then everything you do is subjected to OSHA jobsite inspections. Regardless if someone calls themseves Bubba Gump Roofing or if you work for the Department of Defense you are required to operate in accordance with OSHA regulations and standards. I have watched your videos too Mr. Garcia and have to admit I am literally shocked with your comments pertaining to OSHA. I suggest you bring your company up to speed on Jobsite compliance Do you even know what the OSHA abbreviations stand for ? Occupational Safety Health Administration and when was the Occupational Safety Health Administration created and why ? It was created within the labor board and passed by Congress in 1979 as the Occupational Health and Safety Act. And the why is ..to assure so far as possible every working man and woman in the NATION safe and healthful working conditions and to preserve our human resources." Now does that sound anything like it was intended or limited to Gov projects ? And yes , all my projects regardless if they are Residential or Commercial are OSHA compliant. Residential contractors are full of people who think they know it all and usually more than not they learn things the hard way but when you do Commercial work then your held to a higher standard of compliance. OSHA fines are harsh on Residential but Commercial fines are brutal however OSHA will fine a Residential contractor just as fast as they would a Commercial one except most times depending on the infraction a Commercial contractor can absorb the fine better than a Residential one because more money in Commercial jobs. OSHA field inspectors drive around in the inner cities , suburbs , catastrophe zones and they have even been known to show up on jobsites after a permit is pulled from the building department. Lots of times your competition will report you to OSHA just because they are butt hurt because you won a contract that they wanted or maybe they just didnt like you ? There is also a good possibility that another contractor reports you because he was fined for the same infractions that your getting away with ? Another possibility is they are following regulations and requirements and feel since they have to wear harnesses , toe boards , hard hats , safety glasses , caution tape , railings ,flags along the perimeter of the roof, construction cones , fencing , fire prevention , grounded extension chords , first aid kits , trip hazards , fall hazards , hatch locks , ladder extending a minimum of 3' above the gutters/Eves and lets not forget a safety plan and in some instances having an oppointed safety observer so they feel like you should too. Thanks to Obama he signed a bill called the "Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015” which raises the maximum fine for a lesser violation moves from $7,000 per worker exposed to unsafe conditions to $12,500 per worker. The maximum fine for a serious infraction moves from $70,000 per worker exposed to unsafe conditions to $125,000 per worker exposed. That is up a staggering 80% from the 90's. As far as hating on this video I said nothing in regards to the workmanship. I was merely stating a fact that if this guy got his jobsite tagged the fines for non compliance could shut down a roofing company pretty quick. It would not take long with a crew of 4 to rack up well over $100,000 in fines for lesser infractions and could meet or exceed $500,000 for willful infractions. I knew several roofing contractors that were fined well over $250,000 and over $1,000,000. Also knew a painter that was fined $160,000 for exterior infractions. Needless to say 2 of those guys I mentioned lost everything and closed up shop. They were good hardworking roofers but they ignored the regulations and it bit them hard in the ass. Humor me and research OSHA regulations for roofing and jobsite compliance and take that knowledge and apply them to your daily routine and your weekly safety meetings if you have them.

dont know where you are but osha pops up all the time here in CA. My guys were harnesses within 8 feet of any leading edge with a drop of anything over 5 feet. I have not had to make any phone calls to family telling them bad news. 6 foot up 6 foot in is osha i go above that. have been for 20 years. Been doing single ply since firestone and carlysle were the only options. EPDM the old days.

This company has been doing my roof for a while. Sure, doesn't look OSHA compliant but I'm not sure how they get away with it so often. Their work is pretty good though and we've never had an issue. The city always finalizes the permit on it as well. Is 15-20 years the real life of it? 50 sounds a bit exaggerated.

I've been noticing roofing jobs in my area where this company installed my roof(Orange County, CA) and even with major builders, no one had harnesses when installing or repairing roofs, even flat roofs without parapets. So I"m not sure how strict OSHA is. Apparently, they don't pop up that often? I think this company loosely throws out the number "50 years" for their caulk and roof. I'm sure they're probably 15-20 years. Hopefully we'll be good for 20+ years.

Every roof penetration needs to be at a minimum 8” high of the roof level

that actually varies by manufacturer and city. Many are starting to say 12-14", pipes are generally 5-6" for manufacturers, and many places only hold the rule along the lines of :"high enough for manufacturer approved terminations and penetration seals", which is usually 2-3".

Your thin insulation will not hold up to hail, forming small dents in the membrane straining the scrim. This will simultaneously make the membrane more susceptible to hail but potentially also cause premature delaminations. However, this us an industry issue for letting people do it with a system that's barely been made since 2001 (I know it dates to the 70s, but fire-retardent chemical shortages resulted in a formula change in 2001, for those who don't know roofing history and want to Google to say I'm wrong without knowing CSPE from EPDM.) Beyond my hatred of using one of the worst insulations out there, I agree with your quality. Also, for Gods sake open up your walking welder and clean it out before you fry both the element and motor. The fact I can hear that screaming "kill me" from that distance is a genuine concern to me.

I work for this company which is based in Los Angeles where it almost never hails, we offer and hold to 10 year labor warranties on all of the hundreds of single ply roofs we install every year and dont have problems with our roofs during our warranties (the few callbacks we do have we handle swiftly) :). We also use Secure Rock and other stronger insulations when we can, this option is cheaper though for customers on a budget and we hold to the same high performance standard.

This roof was done almost 10 years ago and remains in service, leak free and functional. The detail welds are the most important part of a TPO system I agree with you there. We probe our work multiple times as part of the process to ensure we don't miss cold welds.
