This video should be mandatory viewing for new whippet owners! Great advice on all accounts!

Everything she says is 100000000% correct. As an owner of 2 whippets, she described it perfectly the character and attitude of mine. Prey and not prey, small dogs, food oriented, everything. So future whippet owner : take her word as the full truth.

I own a Lurcher who is half Whippet & whilst I can't speak for all Lurchers I can say that this advice is 100% correct for my Lurcher too.

Thank you so much for your explicit explanations! Quite a lifestyle the owners have to create for their darlings! Loved this: "[whippet puppies] are like teenagers with no driver's licence that've just got a race car as a gift" 😄

Gem of the day: “It’s in your best interest to make peace with these facts”. Words of wisdom that apply to daily aggravations of all kinds. 😵💫🥴😉🥰

All true. Our girl is 2 years old and has caught squirrels, the last one chewed her up a bit, requiring a vet visit. She now has bells on when she is off lead. Recall is 80%, but zero if she sees prey.

I have a small blue whippet and unless I want to have my day blighted by upsets I have learnt that Bill my whippet will chase other small dogs , cats , squirrels and will take full advantage of other dogs with his speed . Recall training when he's in the zone is useless . Other dogs owners also don't understand that his chundering , spinning and fast speed is just his play. But his play can also become too much This video made me feel so much better ❤❤ I only take Bill off leash up the hills , out of town .so much better and relaxing . Bill stays with us and runs freely and comes back Thank you for this ❤

You are not alone ❤️ We often have to adjust as per the breed we've chosen to own, as they can't escape their instincts and they shouldn't either, since every breed exists for a particular purpose. Also the average dog owner is not educated enough on sighthounds and doesn'tunderstand why they don't behave like a "regular" dog. So we must try to spread awareness whenever we have the chance.

I’ve come to the exact same conclusions with my whippet girl. Still the best breed for me ☺️

Very true. When my girl is Squirrel 'Hunting', even liver jerky wouldn't interest her. They are SO focussed on squirrels/rabbits &c that treats are not as important as 'Hunting'.

Fantastic! 💗 We have to observe, watch and listen, and this way we can keep our beloved hounds and everyone else safe 🤗

@@ShowPaws Very true- we heard a commotion downstairs and a young fox had got indoors- My Whippet had cornered it- the fox was hissing like a cat, showing fearsome teeth {I was afraid the fox would attack} I picked up a folding chair and put it between them and said ''PSHHHTTTTT!!!'' to the fox- who raced off -followed by Whippet. I tried to call whippet back, but she wouldn't listen- she wanted to chase the intruder out. It was very lucky that she wasn't injured- the fox also smelled very ''Foxy'' and peed inside. Luckily not on carpet!

I have two dogs, a Whippet and a Beagle and both goes on dogs park since the age of 3-4 months. Results: they are in great shape, socialized, not afraid of other dogs and humans. Our experience of dog's park is mainly positive. Most of the dogs are vaccinated, sterilized and good dogs that want to play with other dogs ang learn to interact with them. My Whippet first learn to play with small dogs in training class for puppies and then to respect their boundaries meeting them in dog's park. Nothing is perfect, but We always supervise them. Avoiding a problematic situation is often the best way to keep it going...

You're lucky to have such a nice dog park with such positive experiences and that's fantastic! However, I'd say, this is rather an exception and not the norm. After years of experience and unpleasant situations, I personally prefer to have control over the selection of playmates for my dogs at all times, as per their individual temperaments, needs and habits, and I pick locations where this is possible 😊
@sonjaf.8049 Жыл бұрын
thanks for that. I prefer no harnesses, but when the dogs are on the long leash they wear harnesses. I have concerns about the risk of injury if the dog suddenly starts sprinting and then slams into the collar.

Not a harness fan either. But I have nothing against those who use them for the right reason 🤗

My chihuahua is the mother of my mixed Whippet, they both live together and females both. Whippet is 7.5 months old and chihuahua mom is 2yrs old. I notice mom gets tired or upset. Any advice?

Does the temperament of whippets change when aging? My whippet is one and a half year old so I’m curious. 👀
@blucif6210Ай бұрын
yes, usually at 1.5/2yrs they will start calming down from the velociraptor stage 👍🏼

What is that toy called you are playing with the puppy at the end of the video in the field while keeping her on leash?
@ShowPaws Жыл бұрын
That's a handmade toy 😅 It's basically a cat toy, just on a longer rope.
