I think his work on P.S I Love You is simply absolutely brilliant

I think his most impressive work has to be How to Train Your Dragon from 2010. The score is just so beautiful, exciting, and amazing, and John Powell was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Score for the film. My favorite song from the soundtrack has to be Forbidden Friendship, it's just so relaxing and it actually made me fall asleep a few times while listening to it.

Wow I love him. He's so honest, but he values music so highly. He has such a noble shame and humility about him. All that stuff about his requiem starting at 59:43 is sooo awesome. I've always thought about WWI being a crazy catalyst for all the troubles of the 20th and now 21st century and he feels it so deeply.

This was such a huge relief to watch. There are many things about the way he composes that I can completely relate to. The being unable to hear more than 2 seconds ahead part for example, and how he considers himself a 'disabled' composer. Or how he started composing because he wasn't a good enough player. I don't consider myself half as skilled as John Powell, but I can certainly relate to these things! Thank you for the video +Film.Music.Media

Thanks so much for the kind words, and thanks for taking the time to watch/listen! The whole goal was to indeed fill a void that wasn't there before. And the hope is for these long-form video interviews to hopefully do something different than most of the interviews out there. John is also the best!

1:27:57 speaking his thoughts out! In all seriousness though, a lot of knowledge on his philosophy of film composing as well as the world war. I like that he continually tries to improve on his music and does his job for the sake of music.

What do these composers think about figure skaters, gymnasts, etc. using their music? Do they ever consider how else their music is used outside film when they compose?
@MartinRenner6 жыл бұрын
At 26:24, what does he mean with underwriting? Anyone pls help :D
@FilmMusicMedia6 жыл бұрын
To put it bluntly, essentially "phoning it in" :P. Underwriting is essentially doing the bare minimum needed with the music. Think of music that just sits on top of the picture versus music that is more intricate and works with the shape of scenes, pacing and the overall narrative structure.

I don't think JP has really listened to much Jerry Goldsmith, he certainly didn't only write in the style of Ravel. In fact Ravel is the least of his influences.
@alexkarpenter23065 ай бұрын
Why would you think he hasn't listened to much Goldsmith? It isn't like by listening to a lot of someone's stuff you'll start to imitate his style noticeably
