I never understood how alot of coaches completely leave 1st base out of getting some ground ball work

I never understood a coach that says "pick a good hop". Do you really have a friggin choice what hop you get when the ball is smashed to you???

You increase your chances of getting a good hop if you go to the ball as opposed to waiting for it and getting an in between hop. Once its hit you make an instant judgement if it's a big easy hop or if you have to charge and create a short hop which is desired along with the big easy hop. He's an outstanding coach and knows what he's talking about. I've coached girls this way and it works

J Martinez is correct. Unless the ball is absolutely smoked, yes you do have a choice. How you approach the ball and your footwork is so important. In simple terms, you can speed up or slow down to control which hop you get. You want a long hop or a short hop because they are the most predictable. The in between hops are what you’re trying to avoid.
