I think aluminum arms within carbon fiber plates would be a better combination than all aluminum. Should you build it? Hell yea !!!

Good point

I fully agree, I think a carbon fibre-aluminium-sandwich might be the way to go for durability, but... it's going to be hell to manufacture at a reasonable pricepoint as it requires more tooling, more time on the CNC mill etc. I dont think pressing the sheets with both aluminium and carbon fibre beforehand is viable either, it'll likely have to be glued together after cutting/milling. I'll have to buy some 7075 for making a front "cage" for my frame anyways so I could probably test the theory during the summer just for giggles.. hmm

I did this 8 years ago with an old street sign and a scroll saw. I traced out an old zmr 250 with a sharpie. My first attempts led to a few things shorting out but after I black taped my electronics it was ok. I abandoned it and starting flying whoops a few months later. Cool to see someone else try it and do it the right way.

I made a (large) V-tail quadcopter in wood, and it flies like a dream. Due to the stresses and strains during flying however, the arms tend to loosen, and therefore I am considering re-making the frame in aluminium OR by reinforcing the screwed joints with aluminium around the wooden arms, that is, by inserting the square (cross-section) wooden arms into pieces of hollow aluminium profiles, thus combining the advantageous properties of both material in one construction. Replacing a broken wooden arm is neither a lot of work, nor does it involve high costs.. any comments/input = welcome ! 👍

I'd be interested to see about the resonance characteristics, there's a chance it could be a huge tuning fork. Carbon is pretty good at damping resonance and vibration, there's better of course (like wood or bamboo) but it's maybe the best all rounder. I have built bamboo micros, never looked at gyro logs but they flew quite nicely.
@RCOverKill2 жыл бұрын
Before I watch Im pretty sure it'll bend, and I think the resonance of the aluminum might make it hard to tune, Did you say 240 grams for that frame, Holy shit Drainman that's heavy AF, at least for what I'm used to, I like race frames, but the Lab glide freestyle frame I have is 115 grams. How much is the dry weight of the 240 gram frame build? I took a couple months off, and things changed a lot, but that weight blows me away, maybe I just haven't compared freestyle frames enough.
@lemonsquareFPV2 жыл бұрын
On some peoples builds the TPU is about the same weight as the carbon. I too build as light and efficient as possible, makes a huge difference in my eyes.

I am really interested in the vibration of this frame. I have the Pyro that is half aluminium and u can hear it resonating at a certain hz .. it does translate into the gyro but it's not bad at all and the normal filtering takes out.

I have a 3in quad made out of Aluminum. 5mm thick it's indestructible! Made it myself to look exactly like the BQE-3AF. Working on an up scaled 5in version now. Videos of me making it are on my channel. A solid bottom plate would have worked better on your quad. Why have replaceable arms with all those bolts when your not going to break it. But i will say your frame does look cool. Thanks for the great ideas brother.

Not true. my 3in bqe-3af broke so many times i got tired of it and made a replica of it out of 5mm thick Aluminum and it is a tank, indestructible. I am never going back to carbon. im working on a 5in version now with Aluminum. Aluminum will be the future of drone frames.

Hey DMan I think your scale is off or those frames are tanks! Their website says way less and I do understand tpu have TPU on yours but damn!
@TimeFadesMemoryLasts2 жыл бұрын
Carbon fibre can be made significantly stiffer than aluminum while still being lighter, so should carbon fibre be worried: definitely not. I suspect that because of aluminum being less stiff, this might lower the frame's resonance frequency, which is not good and you might have less performance because you need more filtering at lower frequencies.
@angrmgmt2 жыл бұрын
I agree, there is also less of a inherent damping effect in billet alu parts than in composite fibre with a 0/90 layup. But then again, filtering is less of a deal than it used to be even if this will likely move some noise down in the quiet band, and those arms are crazy thick... Interesting for sure
@FLYANDI2 жыл бұрын
I agree - the same issue is on the half aluminum pyro frame. You can hear the vibration and see it in the gyro but the normal filtering takes it out.

I did build full aluminum F450 with about AUW 1.6kg weight, the problem with aluminum is the metal is too soft to handle 1.6kg falling from 10 meters. maybe a lighter 5 inch quad is ok with aluminum. but I will go with carbon fiber due to bed experience with alu

Now I have all the information I needed to go ahead and cut my own frame from aluminum. I might just start by cutting a Source One first as those files are available on github. I have access to a 3kw fiber laser to cut steel or aluminum but not a mill for carbon fiber

been done before... they were purple by diatone?!? it was 3 to 4 years ago .. RealAcc makes one simular called the metalstar IIRC.. they bend in crashes and you end up with wavy frame from bending it back. I had a drone 3 years ago that had titanium arms and that thing is SOLID! but the arms are heavy on that thing... can't wait to see the results of this frame. I do believe the old ones were 6061.. 7075 is much stronger so i'm intrigued... Have my ATTN>>

Aluminum would be cheaper if it were more mainstream. It's only that expensive because only one dude is making it lol If it were as popular as carbon frame price could be as low as $30-$50 for a whole frame.
@JP-qq2kn2 жыл бұрын
Nope, it'll bend too easy. Carbon fiber bends but comes back into shape if it doesn't bend enough to break. Aluminum arms will bend and stay bent. Possibly ripping the motor wires out in the process if the wires aren't long enough.
