the good old days of rucking..no hands on the ball or lying over the ball, you soon learned, stay onside, from the AB strength for 100 years was rucking, then the powers up north banned rucking as the AB were too dominant..not like the static sterilised game we watch today. Great clip thanks for sharing

The second test was the best AB performance of the test series. Sid Going had a blinder and was responsible for 4 of the sides 5 tries. Ian KIrkpatricks 60 metre try was the highlight of the game but he admitted it wasn't the most important try of his career as the ABs were well ahead at that stage. The Lions learnt from this match and didn't allow Going that freedom to run in the 3rd test which they won comfortably.

Thanks so much for uploading this! I remember the series well, grew up in South Auckland and was in Year 10 at the time. But I never saw it on TV and in fact had never seen this match at all until I just watched it now. So again thanks a lot ... that is a piece of history right there. Great to see those famous players - Meads, Kirkpatrick, Going, Williams, Edwards, John, McBride, Duckham and Davies ... and what a game Bob Burgess had! Was obviously a great player although we don't hear as much about him as the others.

Gareth Edwards was having difficulties with practically ever scrum in the series. Nowdays the put in is never straight, and there is rarely any real contest at the scrum. The lineouts were a complete mess, 90% of them turned into scrums. Gerald Davies throw ins nearly always went to the blacks, whilst John Duckham's were more to modern day standards, but the ball got tapped back to Edwards very wildly and the ball came to with him with Sid Going. With the blacks so dominating in the set peices, it was a miracle Lions won series. A lot of that was due to the clever tactical kicking of Barry John, who very sensibly stayed out of contact wth the all black forwards when ever possible.

Some things we never see now. Three point tries, scrums forming immediately, and international rugby at Lancaster Park.

The penalty try (which effectively turned the game) bore a remarkable resemblance to both of Williams' tries against the Springboks the previous year. All were the result of blindside breaks by Going who managed to put Williams clear of the initial defence. Clearly Sid and Beegee had some good on-field chemistry back in the early 70s.:)

Wayne Cottrell would get a year's ban these days for that tackled when he nearly nearly took JPR' head off at he end there. Shocking assaultbut just a pen given. And then ref, iin the wrong place, brings back Gareth Edwards for taking quick penalty from correct position! Kirjpatrick's try incredible plus two of the best from Gerald

In his book Syd Going said the only time he ever felt like swearing at a player was toward Bob Burgess. Rather than use the back line Mr B liked to kick kick kick ... this annoyed Mr Going.

I went here in 2005 to watch the lions, didnt realise how historic the ground was to New Zealand rugby and took it for granted. I am very glad now that I got to watch a game here after its unfortunate demise

@@brettwilkinson9529 he might not have been the best in tiptoe kicking, but it was that system of kicking for the posts that was absolutely unreliable. Kickers became much more accurate when they started to use the instep.

@@annefilippobertozzi7601 you obviously dont have the knowledge in the art of goal kicking. I played the game for 35 years and was a straight on goal kicker starting from age 7 from 1974 - 2008 It was a very accurate way to kick goals. During that time NZ used the Mathews rugby ball , followed by the Adidas ball ( most beautifully balanced ball ever invented). I started off kicking bare foot up to age 11 , then with boots from age 12 on.Was banging goals over 90% from 40 meters from age 10 then up to 68 meters using the torpedo method from age 17. Was embarrased watching Laurie Mains performace against Ireland in 1976 when I was a 9 year old, as every kick he missed , I could have landed at that time without boots.

@brettwilkinson9529 Over 600 points for my team in 4 seasons, second best all time kicker, but you know better about my knowledge... Best kickers ever, from Grant Fox, to Jonny Wilkinson, Dan Carter and Johnny Sexton were all instep kickers for a reason. The only thing we can agree on is that Adidas' Wallaby was the best ball ever.

Imho the Waikato and NZ Maoris fullback Butch Pickrang would have been a better choice. Joe Karam didn't gain national attention until he made the 1972-3 tour of the UK/France. Gerald Kember (who kicked 14 points in his only test, at fullback against the Boks in 1970) had also played for NZ Universities against the Lions (albeit in the midfield), but I don't recall whether he was available for selection. Counties' Bob Lendrum kicked 22 points in the North/South match in that same year (North won 31-9), but I think that was after the end of the Lions' tour.

McCormick was well past his best, and missed a few easy goals in that first test, and was given the run around by King Barry John. Mains was not up to international standard, Ken Going should have been considered.

I believe the only All Blacks Coach to lose 2, 4 match test series in a row Springboks in 1970 and Lions 1971. He took over a All Blacks team at the top, then reduced them to a 3rd rank team , some of selections in South Africa and for this series were puzzling.
