Beams of energetic charged particles are vital for scientific research. In this "Up close with Science" session we'll be live at the TIFR-BARC Pelletron LINAC facility - the particle accelerator systems at TIFR. These machines accelerate ions to very high energies, and beams of such ions are then directed to towards “targets”, where they interact with atomic nuclei, allowing scientists to probe the nature of nuclear matter. The LINAC is a superconducting linear accelerator that boosts the energy of heavy ion beams delivered by the Pelletron accelerator to even higher energies. The radiations emitted in these high-energy interactions are sensed by arrays of detectors. We’ll see INGA - the Indian National Gamma Array - a powerful state-of-the-art detector setup to study structure of atomic nuclei at high spins. Join us for an amazing online tour of this mega experimental facility!
Thanks to Biswajit, Rakeeb, Ananya, Piku, Ravindra and Rudrajyoti for all the help in showing the lab and answering Q&A, and to Ulhas and Rahman for helping with the video and livestream.
